Hey all

FOX is beginning to shut down Fan created x-file sites on the www, and
frankly, I think this show *exactly* what FOX thinks of its fans, and
speaks *volumes* of their character. FOX is more worried about what
money people might be making on the web (and how many sites even *sell*
things???) to realize how much free press they gain from all of these
non FOX sanctioned websites.

The question is, what are we going to do about it, before *your*
favorite x-file site disapears at the word of some FOX exec?

allowing the monsters without to turn within. We are left alone staring
into the abyss. Into the laughing face of madness."

I really doubt FOX cares if someone is making money off these web sites
but they are certainly concerned about someone cheapening their product
by coming out with unprofessional sites and other cheap renditions of it.

What are *YOU* going about do it? Can I assume that you are going to
contribute the first $1,000 to the "FOX web site defense fund"? Are
*YOU* going to start a national campaign against FOX? Are *YOU* going
to create a press release and try to turn this into some sort of national
free speech issue? Are *YOU* going to contact the ACLU and prepare a
business case for why they should get involved?

Sheesh! Time to wake up and realize that while this is a fanboy thing to
you, it's a business to FOX, Chris Carter, and everyone else who makes
their living off of X-Files. And here's a wake-up call: X-Files became
popular because of what the professionals working on it were doing,
not because some fan put up a web site about it. FOX is the one paying
the bills that makes this possible, so I for one don't mind seeing them
protecting their investment since this increases the likelihood it will
continue.

Well COME ON gang, just because you webpagers out there have carried the
flame these
three years, spreading the show's popularity, disseminating information
about show and
actors and crew so that late comers could catch up. Just because YOU
helped them
build it up to the point that now, with wide mainstream popularity and the
movies in the
offing, THEY (Fox) can make a BAZILLION bucks, DO YOU REALLY think they
were going
to share the crumbs off the table?

Forget the Communications Bill, troops, that was a hopeless frontal
assault. THIS is how
they'll take it away......

Um, no. Not to get involved in the web page debate, but I think this
little myth needs to be dispelled. FOX is the one MAKING the money, WE
are the ones PAYING the bills. You see, here's how TV works: Fox gets a
show. They sell lots of time to advertisers who want commercials to be
run during that show, thereby making back whatever the show cost them
PLUS tons and tons of other cash for our buddy Rupert. Then WE, like the
gimps we are, watch the show, see the commercials, and buy the products.
The advertisers take our money for said products, thereby making back
whatever the commericals cost them plus whatever the product cost them
plus tons and tons of money. See? Got a handle on that?
Our $$ --> advertisers --> Fox. Fox is not a benevolent god-station
making the X-Files possible, ok?

Umm, the web didn't take off until 1995 - the internet was around
before that, of course, but when the X-Files started in 1993,
Mosaic was still only something the cognoscenti knew about, and even
then not much, given that the hassles of creating a web server were
pretty steep until Netscape meandered onto the scene.

Get a clue, people - X-Files didn't become popular because a bunch
of fanboys talked it up. X-Files became popular because it was a good
show that people liked. The web didn't make or break the show and it
certain't won't do so now. Granted, a shrewd marketing team would know
how to use it wisely, but that's up to FOX, not you.

Well put. However, Fox _does_ lose money developing shows that
don't get the ratings that attract advertisers. For every successful,
profitable show like the X-Files, or The Simpsons, Fox comes up with
dozens of turkeys. TV networks must ultimately answer to their
shareholders, or those of their parent companies, who are looking to
make a profit on their investments. That's capitalism. But even
with all the commercialism, I still think network TV is a pretty good
deal. In our family, we mute the commercials or fast forward past them
when watching shows on tape.

My question, will it stop with just the X-Files? They have now shown a
Doctor Who episode, does that mean they will go after the bazillion (it
seems) sites that are geared towards that show? What about all their
other shows? What about other networks catching on and doing the same?

Ye gads, just think of the ramifications...

Mr Switzer you sound exactly like that suck-up, geek, Teacher's Pet
wannabe-but lacked the personal charm--now grown up to be a corporate

I'm not sure FOX can shut down sites that are hosted on servers outside of the
US.

That would be difficult and costly.
