Sheesh what as jerk David Duchovny was on WWTBAM. First he told Regis to
stop saying "of course", "final answer" then he
smugly thanked Regis for doing the math.
Plus he was doing it for a charity and he didn't even hesitate to gamble
when he was at 125K. He should have thought it through some and if he
wasn't sure at least the charity would have gotten a lot more money then
what it did. He clearly was unsure of the movie question.

He just seemed so smug and like he was too good for that show almost
like everything was beneath him. I did applaud with the rest of them
when he said he didn't have the answer to the IBM one. That was an easy
one.

I thought he was hilarious. He was clearly putting it on. Perhaps
the lack of the laugh track fooled you -- yeah I thought the laugh track
was mandatory down there, when someone says something funny on American
TV -- I guess someone at ABC wasn't on the ball ....

'breakfast at tiffany's'. that's what he bombed out on when he was on

It was called being funny. He and "Reeg" have this little teasing,
adversarial relationship going on, and they carried it through to the game
show. And come on, that music *IS* annoying as hell.

For all we know, he agonized for 15 minutes and they "edited for time." They
do that ALL the time with the real contestants (one guy spent 20 minutes
arriving at an answer, apparently, and it was cut to 13 seconds on the
episode). We will never know if he hesitated, or for how long.

> He just seemed so smug and like he was too good for that show almost

Part of his shtick.

They applauded because he was set up as the big, overeducated smartypants of
the group, and it was very funny. David himself, however was the only one to
point out that education doesn't help you one bit with 75% of the questions
on that show. It's trivia. It's nothing you can study for.

Lighten up.

X-Files/WWTBAM bit they filmed for David Letterman's return to action.

I actually thought that David was being quite funny. And Regis kept
calling him "Mulder" anyway. I think it was just teasing between the
too. Don't take it so seriously -- it's just a game show!

And, for the record, I thought it was Braveheart too.

Don't worry, Nick, most of us do not need a laugh track to figure out when
someone is being hilarious or putting on. We can usually figure it out for
ourselves. :)

But then, that would ruin the fun of starting yet another moronic thread about
DD being a jerk, even though in this case, he is being enjoyable, cute and
funny in addition to trying to win $$ for charity.

Don't take it so seriously -- it's just a game show! They planed it, and plus
that DD went all the way to BRING more money in for the charity, which would
have been better for them, but why do you call him a jerk if the man give
32,000 to a school? I call this smart and friendly, hmm when did you give that
much money away? just think about it before you post.

The guy goes on national television, thinking nothing of his own
financial/personal/promotional gain, to help out a couple buddies he went to
school with an honorable charity. What a dick.

Thank you, Dan, for turning me off Mr. Duchovny once and for all. You have

What are you stupid? Sorry, but I can't find a better word, stupid stupid
stupid! You obviously have *No* sense of humor at all. He was cute and funny as
were the rest of the guest's. They were entertaining, as celebrities do. It's a
shame that an X-files fan can not see humor. This is truly the worst post I've
ever read on alt.xfiles.
A jerk for getting money for a charity? what the heck are you smoking??!?!?

While I wouldn't call David a jerk (I think he was hilarious), I did
wonder why he guessed that question he seemed to have no answer to. Even
with editing, the show would've included David agonizing at the question
because: 1) seeing celebrities sweat is good television; and 2) the show
wants to cast these people in as positive a light as possible. What I'm
surprised is that the show had those rules for Celebrity Millionaire. I
would think the charity would receive whatever money level the star
stopped at (what fun is it if the celebrity just doesn't bother to
answer?). Even Jeopardy has a minimum for their star contestants!

I thought he was so funny. I didn't think any of his comments or his
behavior was smug at all. I thought he was just having fun with Regis
and playing off of Dana Carvey. May-be it's because I hate the show or
may-be it is because I really dislike Regis and I would treat him the
same way if I got the chance. If you want to talk about smug people let
us talk about Regis. I hate how he treats people and takes little pot
shots at them. He can cruel and it's probably the reason I am the only
one in the states that never liked his talk show. Go ahead, I'm ready
for the flames now.

Well, they do allow the other contestants in the seats to "cheat" for them,
up to the 32K level. (remember the clothing line that Dana I think, was going
to answer D: FUBU?) They'd never let that happen on the regular one.
I enjoyed the show (including DD), but unfortunately, for about half the show,
my cable was so bad due to channel interference that it was unwatchable :(
(Our local ABC station is channel 58, and there's another 58 not too far away
that causes terrible interference in the spring/summer)

When was the episode filmed? A while ago I assume, based on the
rantings of the imsufferable Rosie..

Did anyone else pick up on the question Reege asked DD about how his
movie was doing - DD seemed a little cool when he replied its been No.
1 for 3 weeks.

Was that just sarcasm, or was it because the movie had not really been
released yet?

I didn't watch the show--ne'er seen an ep of WWTBAM, but this morning on

think he was carrying on as part of a broader joke. I liked when he asked

But I almost lost it when he called Tea Leoni as one of his lifelines, and

Apparently so. WWTBAM is a joke show. I cannot believe that
any celeb would actually want to be on it. There is more honor
in being the Hollwood Squares.

Nothing is necessary.

Everything is possible.

Yield to temptation.

Just do it.

I apologize to Alex Trebek for thinking he was a bitter jerk. The
questions really are for stupid people. I thought he was being sarcastic
when he stated that a common question of WWTBAM would be "One of the
following is the most popular color of a Post-it note".

Where do you think the original NYers came from? And why we drop our

No way! He's far too Mr All American to be remotely British. As for his
sense of humour - I have yet to hear it. In all my years of watching TXF I
have yet to see an interview with DD in UK. I'm sure that'll probably change
when RTM comes out - if his US publicity campaign is anything to go by!

The first few questions are really easy. Yes, the Post-it question
is a common type question; but it's a common $100
question. Almost everyone wins at least
$1000. I think only about three people in the whole
history of the show have failed to make the $1000 ...
and that's part of the fun too: getting to see one of these
losers so you (the viewer) can feel superior. <G>
Then the questions between $1000 and $32,000
are only easy if you know them ... individually, a majority
would still get them right but everyone has gaps in their knowledge.
So the viewer who knows four out of five some of the time
and five out of five some of the time will still think the questions at that

level are incredibly easy ... but all it takes is *one* question/one gap
to send the contestant back down to $1000. After $32,000,
the questions do get more difficult.  WWTBAM is a feel-good
game show because most viewers can answer a lot of the questions,
and the ratings are so good they can afford to give away a lot of money
to what would be losers on other game shows.  Think about it
this way: $32,000 is equivalent to the second place Jeopardy
player and $1000 is third place.

Also, the questions on this celebrity version are definitely dumbed
down just like celebrity Jeopardy's questions.

I hate to say it, but the contestants are dumbed down too. Did you see the
times it took these guys to answer questions about tv shows and movies?
It's their industry for God's sake! David was the quickest I've seen so
far, in the 6 second range, I believe, which might get him to the big chair
on the real show. The other ones I;ve seen were like 9, 11, 12 seconds.
And these are questions about the industry they are in!

Why thank you, I'm actually from Michigan - but I sure appreciate

Just out of curiosity, tell me something...are you grouping New
Yorkers? You know...Buffalonians with denizens of Rochester? Kids from
Ithaca with kids from Watertown? I just want to know which of us have
a sense of humo(u)r, you know...wanna stay out of the bad regions.
So...what's funnier...the Finger Lakes or New York City?

Well, you must be right. I've heard that The Netherlands actually
does have two capitals.
