Violence, TV and The X-Files

A quick review of this season of The X-Files shows some disturbing
scenes and usage of violence. From the brutality of "Home"
(bludgeoning deaths) to the gore of Sanguinarium. From the creepy
torture of Unhuhe to the brutal slaying in Never Again, both
dramatising themes of violence against women. The recent Small
Potatoes raised questions about the comedic portrayal of a serial
rapist and the most recent "Zero Sum" portrayed the painful deaths of
several schoolchildren attacked while they played.

The essay challenge topic is to discuss violence in The X-Files, when
is it disturbing, when is it distanced/desensitized and why/how? Is
it just a personal interpretation based on personal sensitivities? Is
violence intergral to the telling of an X-Files story or is it a
sensationalism ploy? Please note that this topic has nothing to do
with under-aged viewers, assume that the audience is a mature
audience.

You may also wish to reflect on past seasons to decide whether or not
there has been a change in the portrayal of violent images and themes.

Post on/before Sunday and preface with ESSAY#9.
