Let's see.....the quote from the script is:
Dr. Raymond Varnes: "Did you know that half of all adults who have had
a near death experience can't wear a watch? The increased electrical
activity in their bodies renders the watches on their wrists inoperable."
I don't recall if there were any changes in this line when it was filmed
(which happens occassionaly) but at any rate, that's how it reads in
the final draft.

I'm not a scientific type, but the reason I asked the question is because I
was telling my mother about the episode and she was surprised by this
"fact". She had a near-death experience 27 years ago, and she said for many
years afterwards she was unable to wear a wind-up watch (quartz is ok)
because it would stop working--but it would work fine on other people.
She never connected the two....

I was pondering about that "fact". I thought Mulder said something about
the increased electri-something of the near-death survivor screws up the
working of the watch. So I figured it would screw up the quartz ones (since
they're battery-operated & I thought more susceptible to electromagnetic
influences) but would not impair the wind-up (mechanical) watches. Guess
I'm wrong - electricity & magnetism was never my strong subject! So what
exactly did Mulder say? And what's the significance of the name Lazarus?

I looked this up cuz I, too, was curious ... Lazarus was a man (a
diseased beggar) who was raised up from the dead by Jesus.
Spooky!

Well, I don't know about near-death experiences, but I *do* know that
neither my mother nor I can wear watches unless they are
"quartz-movement" - the others just don't work. I have seen the hands go
backwards and "hop, skip and jump" - although I haven't tried this
recently.
I'd be interested to know why...

Slight correction--there are two men named "Lazarus"
in the Bible; one was a beggar mentioned in a parable,
the other was a friend of Jesus' (brother of Mary and
Martha) who died and was resurrected by Christ.
And thus ends the sermon for today! :) SML
In the Christian tradition, Lazarus was a friend of Jesus. He died of an
illness while Jesus was away teaching. When Jesus heard, he returned home
and was so distraught over his death he raised Lazarus from the dead. He
had been in his tomb for 3 days (and it smelled like it), but when Jesus
called he walked out alive.
So, the significance is that the agent Jack was seemingly dead, and came
back to life a la Lazarus.
