The look of "The X-Files" has a strong resemblance to the look of "Friday
the 13th, the Series" from the late 80's. Unlike "The X-Files", this show
was set in an anonymous Canadian city.

Of course X-Files was filmed in Vancouver. It had that filmed in
Toronto or Vancouver look about it. But the clincher for me (apart
from the CN logo on the front of the locomotive in the season ender)
was the architecture of most of the houses in the series. It didn't
matter whether we were sup[posed to be in Maryland or Idaho, the
houses always had the look of the older gentrified houses in Kitsilano
and other resdidential areas south of Van's downtown.
It's less easy to pin down particular locations in the X-Files than it
is in recent Toronto-based productions such as RoboCop and TekWar,
both of which seem to rely heavily on Toronto's increasing stockpile
of alienated futuristic looking architecture to provide backdrops.
However, a tour of most of Metro's suburban city halls will identify
most of RoboCop's locations, while in the pilot episode of TekWar, I
noticed that someone had forgotten to take down a TTC subway sign
along the Yonge St. flank of the Eaton Centre in one scene.
The preceding has of course been irrelevant to this newsgroup. but I
thought they were interesting observations.

Inless of course you live here like I do :) - although 21 Jump
Street was a little more blatent in its use of the Vancouver skyscape
(the geodesic dome, BC Place, the skytrains, etc. etc.). What X-Files
TENDS to do is cover up any blatent references they can (such as covering
up the BC Transit logo on the buses.

Although they did make one small slip at the beginning of the season finale.
During the high speed chase that you see at the beginning of the episode you
can very clearly see the CN logo on the front of the approaching train!
I also noticed while watching a re-run of "Beyond the Sea" the other night
that you can glimpse the Homer St. sign while Scully drives toward the
abandoned warehouse where Boggs's clues are found.

Yep, they usually seem to go to a little more effort to cover
things up, but as it has been stated in certain US cities close to the
border, it is not uncommon to see CN trains kicking about.

Well, I'm bad on the names of the shows (perhaps I'm a
half-phile) but in the one where the aliens were trying to abduct the UFO
buff, they used the SAME shipyard that was used in the season finale.
It's a pretty generic dock-type location I presume.

I used to work at that shipyard, Versatile Pacific Shipyards, in
North Vancouver; it's demise due to Cdn govt's cancellation of a
huge Polar 8 icebreaker contract .. as well as competition in
Washington State & Portland yards and other countries with cheap
labour forces.
I see it frequently, Highlander a good example.
Although a great place for seclusion and privacy to film, car
speed chases, etc., it is an old decrepit place, lots of
buildings precariously standing (we had to wear hard hats while
in the yard) and I wonder if safety is a concern while shooting
there.
Also, in season finale, Mulder gave reference to a street, which
was Pandora Street; there is in fact such a street downtown, but I
do not know if filming was at it's location (not too familiar).

Yep, well I work at a "competing" (or one that competed before
Versatile sunk) shipyard, so Versatile is somewhat familiar to me too.
Having driven around in there it's prefect for car chases and the like -
but you're right about it being decrepid. However, that seems perfect
for filming things.

Yes, Vancouver street names are used willy-nilly I suppose
because they are generic enough not to "give away" anything.

Perhaps, but I can vouch that it is indeed a street in Vancouver.
