That dog was first seen in the Clyde Bruckman (sorry about the spelling
if it's wrong) episode. Remember the psychic who could tell how people
were going to die? He died and Scully took the dog.

The dog was introduced on Darin Morgan's first season-three episode,
"Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose" (the one about the psychic who foresaw
people's deaths). Mr. Bruckman's neighbor had a Pomeranian who evidently
got the munchies after his owner died, leaving it without enough puppy
chow to sustain its little dog stomach, and so it . . . umm, well . . .
it, uh . . . shall we say, turned to alternate sources of nourishment.
Yick.

Anyway, Scully and Mulder arrived to find the dog and a note from
Bruckman, asking if Scully would adopt it. In the final scene of the show
she is watching television with the dog on her lap.

I, too, was somewhat surprised that she kept it. Not only for the
aforementioned reasons (out of town a lot, etc.), but the dog ATE HIS
OWNER, for pete's sake! YUCK! I certainly wouldn't want it around *me*,
would you???

Ah, but that's Mr. Morgan for you. . . . And he *is* a fabulous writer --
seems to have a real handle on Mulder and Scully, which is something that
seems sorely missing in many of the third season eps.

The dog that you saw Scully bathing was one which she inherited
from a man in a previous episode. It was the one where this man, who is
phsycic, helps to lead Scully and Mulder to a serial murder. Did you see
that one? Well...I don't want to spoil it for you, but in the end, he
specifically gives his dog to Scully to care for. It has a lot of
significance in the episode.
