Perhaps, but it WAS the mission of The First human on the Moon.
Signifiying <SP!> the first human in an extra-terrestrial atmosphere.
Underlying Mulder's theories of Extra-Terrestrials exploring OUR world.

I know *I* was flashing back to every MSR fanfic I've ever read in
which M takes S out dinner and gives her an engagement ring (she is
touched, moved to tears, and says yes - of course!! :) ). All I kept
thinking was "That CC...he tricked us all...he's goin' for the
jugular" and subsequently "I would have heard about this on
a.t.x-f....I would have heard..."
And, darn it all, it was just a keychain. Oh well.
Wow, I have gotten 'shippyer than ever this year. Fascinating.

Isn't Apollo 11 the mission where the astronauts have since come forward
to say they thought they saw a UFO out there?
I think it's a gift Mulder would like to receive himself, so--typical
guy--he gives it to her!

Well, our boy Mulder, even at his nicest and sweetest, doesn't
actually think about what significance things have for _other people_,
just what significance they have for _him_. Apollo 11 was a big thing
for him so he took it for granted that the medallion would mean a lot
to Scully. This is just Mulder being Mulder.

This kind of remark would never get me into OBSSE, but if Scully loves
Mulder, then because Apollo 11 is important to him, it will become
important to her. Kind of like, oh say. . .THE X-FILES themselves.
The search for the TRUTH. Finding SAMANTHA.
And I do agree with Maggie. For whatever reason, that keychain was
important to Mulder and by giving it to Scully Mulder was sharing a
part of himself with her. Hey, that's all the birthday present *I'd*
need ;)

My episode reviews available at (or email me for mailing list information):
http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Vault/1411/main_rev.html
My theory (OTTOMH (Off The Top Of My Head)) is that he's teasing her a
little; the Apollo moon landings are still rumored by some to have been
faked on a desert soundstage, a myth fleshed out in Peter Hyams's
"Capricorn One." So by presenting her with a memento of the first and
most famous Apollo mission, he's underscoring once again the difference
between official truth and true truth (a theme the episode explores in
detail, of course) and maybe even mocking her science-reliance (the moon
landings being, to some, pinnacles of modern technical achievement).
Or it could be a "time flies" reference -- after all, almost thirty
years have passed since the noble moment the Eagle landed.

Considering Mulder believes his sister was abducted by aliens and
Scully is now dying of a cancer he also believes was caused by her
abduction (by aliens), wouldn't you think he'd be a little more
sensitive to that and not give her a birthday present that says, "Ha!
I believe in aliens."

Well, there were the cracks about the alien implants. But, Maybe Chris
just did that to make us all talk about it like we are. He's probably
sittin' up in his office laughing at us. And, we love him for it.
