Gillian Anderson - The Martin Short Show
November 4th, 1999

MS: My first guest is the Emmy Award-winning star of the
smash hit series, "The X-Files." The season premiere
is this Sunday, and aren't we lucky -- we have an early
peek. Let's take a look, shall we?

[Scene shows Scully in some kind of small, wooden
structure, looking toward a lantern that large moths
have gathered around. As she goes up to turn the
flame down/off, we see someone standing just inside
the cloth flap that seems to be an entrance. Scully
quickly looks over, saying, "Who's there? Who's
there?" but the figure has disappeared.]

Please say hello to the huntress of aliens herself,
Gillian Anderson.

[GA comes out in a gray turtleneck sweater, black
skirt and strappy black heels. Wears one ring on
right ring finger, on on left thumb :o) and a nice
silver watch. Scullyish, straighish hair, with only a
bit of a flip noticeable here and there.]

MS: You'd almost think they liked you or something.
[GA smiles] They're wild about you. [Audience cheers]
Hey, you look good.

GA: Thank you.

MS: You look very pretty. Thanks for being here.

GA: It's good to be here, good to see you.

MS: How're you?

GA: I'm good!

MS: I haven't seen you since, uh, I have a Christmas
party every year and, uh, Gillian gets up every year
and kills with this couple a' Christmas songs she
kind of, uh ...

GA: I do not!

MS: [As "Gillian"] "Goin' to the chapel and we ..."
... every year with the pian-...

GA: [sort of interrupting] I haven't ever sung a song!

MS: No ... why is that?

GA: The only reason why you throw that party is so
that you can sing. [both laugh] It's true!

MS: I only throw the party just to si-- that's not true.

GA: It IS true.

MS: No, we, no. I'll tell you why I throw the ... is,
people are too shy in Hollywood. People come to
Hollywood, they get to shy. I think it's great to have
a party, you have a party, you can have people in, you
know, and you go "hi, how you doin', how's your
latest thing" -- you pretend to care -- then, at some
point you wheel out the piano and you get up in front
of the tree and you sing Christmas songs.

GA: I know, it's great, it's the most wonderful thing,
and it's very, it's disarming too, in a way.

MS: Why?

GA: I mean everybody just kind of gets up and sings
whether they have a good voice, a good singing voice
or not ...

MS: Well that's the gimmick, the worse the better ...

GA: ...and it just kinda humanizes everybody. But I
have a... a... I've been preparing something but I was
gonna do {? sounds like "All Stars"??} but then you did
that two nights ago, so... I don't know what I ...

MS: Well, you've got a few months.

GA: I do, I do.

MS: When Gillian came over to our house, my daughter
is the biggest X-Files fan, and she had her bedroom
covered with posters ...

GA: Yeah, she did.

MS: ...and you sweetly went up and signed David
Duchovny's name, which I thought was nice.

[laughs]

GA: I actually drew a moustache on David Duchovny.

MS: Yeah

GA: ... but ...

MS: Hey, did you two ever have sexual tension? ...between
you two?

GA: Did ... you mean in person, or on the show?

MS: No no no, not in person ... uh, *yeah*, in person. Yeah,
in person. In person.

GA: In person did we ever have sexual ...?

MS: Well you were both single at one point.

GA: Uh, yeah, I guess there has ...

MS: He's a good-looking lad, as we say in Canada ...

GA: Yeah, he is a *very* good-looking lad.

MS: And you're quite the looker ...

GA: I think *everybody* has sexual tension with David.

MS: My question wasn't about everybody. My question
was about you.

GA: No .. [laughs]
Well, yeah, I mean, I think you just automatically do with
him ... he exudes sexuality.

[audience agrees; GA nods]

MS: Did you ever have a date?

GA: Did we ever have a date? No, we had a few meals
together, but I don't think they were ever dates.

MS: Oh, so never got to the point of that ...

GA: No.

MS: Well it is weird, when you're working together ...

GA: It is.

MS: ... and you're on location in Vancouver, which
is usually ...

GA: Yeah.

MS: You know.

GA: Yeah, I was in a relationship at the time, and
you know ...

MS: ... and then *he* got in a relationship ...

GA: We had pasta together.

MS: And that's it.

GA: Uh huh.

MS: Yeah. And uh ... [GA laughing] Now you've
moved your show to Los Angeles, Cal., and of
course you're not on location so there's not that
temptation anyway, right?

GA: R...rrrriight, I guess. No! I mean, he's married,
he has a child ...

MS: Well, not NOW, I don't mean NOW ...

GA: Exactly! We're friends, you know, we have got
seven years ...

MS: You have a daughter, he has a little daughter ...
Not now ...

GA: Exactly!

MS: ...but in the beginning.

GA: In the beginning ... well, in the beginning we
weren't in L.A.

MS: I know.

GA: Uh huh. [laughs]

MS: Do you miss Vancouver? Were we Canadians
nice to you?

GA: I do, I actually still have a home up there. Are you
Canadian? [MS: mm hmm] You ARE Canadian. Where
... where ...

MS: I was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and when
I was about 22 moved to Toronto. And lived there up
until about ten years ago.

GA: Do you speak French?

MS: Un petit pou.

[They burst into a very short French dialog which I won't
begin to try transcribing.]

MS: But, Vancouver's not really a French province. It's
more Montreal ...

GA: No, not at all, but you know everything still has, um,
has French, has French on the labels. You buy Rice
Krispies and it, and it has the ingredients in French,
even though ...

MS: It's bilingual.

GA: It is bilingual.

MS: It's a bilingual country, means that everything ... if
you see a stop sign, says "Stop ... arrete." Which is,
you know, could also be Jewish: "Stop, already."
But LA is the new big move.

GA: It is the new big move. It's been good to us.
Really good. And for some reason -- I have no idea
why -- but for some reason this year I've had more
days off this year and last year than for the entire five
years we were up in Vancouver combined. I'm not
sure why that is.

MS: L.A.'s a very strange place to get used to. They
always say it takes about three years of living here,
but for some it's just immediate. Michael [indicates
sidekick guy] just moved here from back East.

Michael: Yeah, three months ago.

GA: Back East ... New York?
MS: [simultaneously] ...and it's weird for you isn't it?

Michael: New York, yeah. Yeah, it's very weird.

GA: Well you know what, when I first moved up to
Vancouver I had no money, and I didn't have a car,
and I didn't have an apartment, when we first went
up to actually start filming the series.

MS: Well you didn't *get* the show in Vancouver,

GA: No ...

MS: ... but whenyou started ...

GA: No, but I was living here, but probably for only
about a year before we went up there. But I had
*nothing*, and then once the show started and I
moved up there, I found and apartment here, and I
found a car, and I ... umm [starting to look embarrassed
-- maybe MS making distracting face?] ... and I got
furniture for the apartment, and every other weekend
I would come down to be in for a day and a half. I just
needed some kind of home base. And ... you know.

MS: And the Canadians are very ... it's a very easy
place to go 'cause it's a kind of a "How ya doin', eh?
Good ta see ya" ... it's a ...

GA: Oh, it's very easy, and everybody's very nice. What's
that joke -- if you want a ... How do you get a Canadian
to say "I'm sorry"? You step on their foot. [laughs] But it's
true, I mean that ... I don't mean that in a derogatory way
at all ...

MS: No, it's a love letter.

GA: It is, it is! No, it's true, they're just very, very sweet
people.

MS: I think that uh ...

GA: ... like you!

MS: Awwww. Do you mean that?

GA: Yes!

MS: I went to the ... the ... truthfully, my daughter
is the biggest fan imaginable, and I went to the
premiere of the X-Files film ...

GA: I remember that.

MS: ... with five girls, of age 14, and myself, and
my daughter, and so there were seven of us coming
out of the car, and we were all excited. And you were
very sweet to all of them. And, uh, it's been an
amazing ... I mean you do ... you start off with these
shows, obviously, and you have no idea what's gonna
happen, especially if you're in Vancouver and you're
not in the hub of .. uh ...

GA: And at the time that we started I wasn't a television
watcher at all. And I had no clue as to how rare it was
that a show actually, you know, stabilizes and takes off.
I didn't realize at the time how fortunate we are to be
involved on that.

MS: The premiere show is going to be ...

GA: Is coming up this Sunday.

MS: Is this Sunday, yeah. Well ...
[big audience reaction] It's on Fox, is the network,
Sunday, it's *this* Sunday.

GA: Nine o'clock.

MS: And you're very sweet to come to our
little show ...

GA: Well, it's been a pleasure to be here.

MS: ... with your beautiful sweater.

GA: Tha--! [laughs]
