I was just wondering (about myself actually) that if there were no ATXFA or
ATXF, how interested would I still be in TXF?
I almost stopped watching during S4 which some see as a high watermark in
the series. S5 actually brought me back to the show and then that summer, I
discovered ATXF and ATXFA. They both really heightened my interest. Made me
look at the show in a way I had not before. I certainly never thought about
the meta text of eps or knew the names of the writers and directors. I don't
think I'd be so annoyed with CC. I certainly wouldn't know about DD's
contract or even a lot of his attitude about TXF because I don't read show
business press (except on the ng).

Now I'm not sure what the effect is. I don't know that'd I'd be as negative
or as positive without the ngs. I suspect that I just wouldn't have thought
much about the show this summer and would have tuned in for the premiere if
it fit into my schedule (which it usually does. I spend most Sunday nights
at home).

Another element to add to the mix is spoilers which I would never have seen
if it weren't for ng activity. I'm not sure if they've had an overall
negative of positive effect on me. I know, reading some of them has made me
miss Scully, but I'm not sure I'd have the appreciation for Scully that I do
without the ngs. I wasn't a big Scully fan before I came to the ngs.

I just wonder if anyone else has thought about this.

Before I even had a computer, during Season 3, I remember I sent DC
picture postcards to one or two of the producers about Krycek being
locked in the silo. I also had a letter published in Cinescape, that
same Season 3, about The X-Files. I think back on that now and I
think that's pretty outrageous (for me). I would never do something
like that now. I guess that was the only way I could express myself,
then. I also remember wearing out my Duane Barry, Ascension, One
Breath tapes, during the summer hiatus between Seasons 2 and 3. I
thought no TV show could get any better than that. I was taping way
before I got on line the summer before Season 4.

I remember everyone bitching about the beginning eps of Season 4.
There were 4 major complaints running through almost all of the ATXF
posts.

1. How could the show move from Friday to Sunday foresaking the cult
audience to attract a mainstream audience? The end is near!

2. Those fiends at FOX began issuing their first cease and desist
website letters. FOX lawyers are lowlier than nits on gnat's nuts!

2. CC has abandoned his firstborn XF for his new baby Millennium! How
could heeeee leeeeeeave us liiiiiiike thaaaaaat!

3. Morgan and Wong (who were gone for Season 3) *obviously* didn't
watch tapes of the Season 3 episodes before coming back to write
Season 4 episodes. Just who do they think they are?

Ahhhhhhh, the good old days. ;-D

When I got on ATXF I made it a point to learn more about the
behind-the-scenes XF people and how and why they do what they do. Of
course, the "why" part was mostly poster speculation. But, I found
that info and opinion to be very interesting.

I read magazines so while I read about that stuff, I didn't pay
attention to it (remember it) until I started posting to ATXF. I
still don't care enough to read and react with fervor to what DD and
GA do (other projects, personal life) when they're not working on The
XF. I do care about what they say, however, and because of that I
have a better impression of one of them than the other.

Most people do spend Sunday nights at home. That's why Sunday TV
audiences are bigger than other nights of the week. If I was not on
line, I'd still be moaning about the show looking different and the
mytharcs being smaller but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't know, or give
much thought to, why that was so.

Spoilers - UGH! When I know what's going to happen, way in advance, I
tend to evaluate scenes/incidents based on whether it's lived up to my
high or low expectations that I've been thinking about and pre-judging
for weeks instead of just allowing myself to be entertained by the
story, overall, when I see it.

This is *exactly* why I gave up spoilers. I would spend an entire episode
waiting for a particular scene, and then once it came, I would find myself
comparing it to the version in my head. It really ruined many episodes for
me. I was so shocked at Scully's preggo announcement that I can't imagine
having known that beforehand. I *love* to be shocked. ;-)

I was very enthusiastic the first 3 seasons and part of that was since I had
no connection to the ngs, and most of my friends didn't watch TXF, I felt
like it was "my" show. It amazed me that it wasn't cancelled and when I
found out it had a dedicated following I felt like part of a secret society.
It was so different than anything else on TV and of course, since I wasn't
discussing it with anyone, I thought all my in depth insights were unique
and special. Boy did I have a rude awakening when I came online and found
out I was only mildly focused and other folks had thought through just about
every aspect of the show. Still, I was amazed to find something on TV that
not only entertained me, but did make me think.

And I didn't know about any of this until I came on line and people
mentioned their old complaints about S4. I think for me it was because the
show was more popular, and I hadn't really keyed in on the M&S UST. It just
didn't matter too much to me.

I think I had lowered expectations for TXF by S5, but then when the change
came and we saw Mulder wearying and questioning his quest and Scully
reinvested, it perked my interest up. I did have a relapse of disinterest
with Christmas Carol, Emily and All Souls, but one of the things that
happened when I discovered the ngs, and in this case especially ATXFA, were
the discussions of these eps. I found all the mystical religiousity
offputting but there were people who hated or loved these eps. Within those
discussions, regardless of my initial reaction to the eps, I found a lot
that interested me. When I watched them again (and I had to wait for the
reruns as I'd erased those tapes thinking I'd never want to see them again),
I was fascinated by all the nuances folks had pointed out. In that respect,
I think the ngs did reinvest me in TXF when I might have started becoming
only an occasional watcher.

Also, I hadn't been on ATXF long till I got my first flaming. I was so
innocent I thought it was a big joke and the person attacking me was
playing. Much to my surprise, she got really mad when I "joked" back and
introduced me to the killfile. Imagine my surprise. Then I found I actually
didn't mind fighting and in fact, at times enjoyed it (as others do, but
refuse to admit they do). But now, I've been in a couple extended flamers
and I've begun to find them less entertaining as they always settle into a
predictable pattern. Interesting.

I just bought magazines for pitures or interviews. I didn't care much about
how the show was made or the goings on at 1013 (needless to say, I didn't
know about all the inside references to 1013 and CC's birthday, etc. till I
came onto the ng). I mostly read about DD as I was not a big GA fan. I liked
Scully, but as I said, I didn't really warm to her till S5.

Spoilers don't bother me at all. Right now, I think they serve a positive
purpose for me in keeping me interested in the show during the long hiatus
and all the changes. I like spoilers better than the interview with CC and
Spotnitz that only serve to annoy me. I never knew about spoilers till I
came to ATXF. I don't study them nor do I pursue them, but if I come across
one, I 'll read it.

I know exactly how you feel! I *still* have the "spoiler" version of the
cabin scene from "Theef" in my head, and it's *so* much better than what
they aired! Argh!

I, too, am enjoying "not knowing", even though I think we pick up a few
spoilers here in threads without a warning in the subject line. <g>

There was all that controversy about "Limerick" never being released,

I started watching XF during S5 reruns. The only reason at the time that I
got hooked was because it was twisty and had two partners that I hoped would
get romantically involved. I loved the UST! The was the beginning. After I
was hooked, I bought a computer and found the NG. Then everything became
more profound than I could ever imagine. If I had not came here, I never
would have:::
1. Known the names of the eps
2. Cared about who wrote what ep and who directed it and compared that to
other eps wrote or directed by the same or different people
3. Listened to the music in the background to see how it affected my mood,
then run out and buy the CD
4. Found and became hooked on Millennium <actually it was Laura Cap who
started that because I remembered when she wrote a post on the ep 'Borrowed
Time' and recommended that we should watch it> ;D
5. Found and watched Harsh Realm <which was a very good show BTW, FOX sucks
Rocks!!>
6. Known about the personal lives of the actors and how they impacted the
show
7. Known what a spoiler is and how "knowing" will impact viewing a first-run
ep
8. Talked to some of the best, friendliest, intelligent, compassionate,
'real' people online that I have ever known
9. Learned how to make a webpage, write fanfic, organize a Shipper group,
and make a WAR happen, all based on one TV show. Wow.
10. Learned how to nit-pick <which to me means rip apart, shred, find the
big picture, find the little pictures, connect the dots, analyze, and debate
your findings> eps and become 'focused'. Since I know how, I do that to
EVERYTHING I watch. Thanks guys.... ;D

Now, looking back at this list, I feel very privileged to be here. :)

Yes, but except for the newbies, all of the rest of us had seen dupes
of that hot X-rated XF episode. ;-D

I still remember the newbies asking how they could get a copy. ;-D

You know, I've heard rumors that they're actually saving "Limerick" for a
theatrical release after season 23. I don't think it's a rumor, because the guy

It's going to take some time, because they have to digitally remove Mulder
from every scene, and put someone else in his place.

That's why CC went with RP instead of Cuba Gooding, Jr. He's so much closer

Are you yankin' my chain here, giz?

Here be spoilers for anyone who hasn't seen S7 yet... :)

Power goes out in the cabin. Scully goes out to try to start the generator.
Peattie (sp?) does the doll thing, but I do believe with three pins, and not
in the eyes, and she ends up on the ground. The doc comes out to help (her
gun goes off or something?) but Scully sends him back in the cabin to
protect his daughter. Mulder almost runs over Scully when he arrives, and I
don't even remember who shoots Peattie. Mulder, I think.

This is just *so* much more "Scully" than that inept bumbling Geordi La
Forge act they showed..... Grrrrrrr....

You see, that's what happens when you don't read spoilers before hand.
I, for one, don't go back and read them after the episode airs. So I
miss out on a lot of discussion. Unless someone had a big beef with
what was rumored to air, and what did actually air, I don't generally
find out about these things.
