I've been saying this since I first saw the "Pilot" I was just afraid to admit
this. I remember one time they did a murder mystery. Anyone who thinks they
don't remember but not quite, all you need to do is to look at the opening
credits of the "X-Files". Yep, that's right. There is a shot of Scully in the
opening credits wearing a plaid suit jacket, and her short hair, slightly
curled, with a flash light. That was actually why I watched part of the
"Pilot". I said, what? no, way. I can't believe they gave "MathNet" it's own
prime time t.v. show, but it was the X-Files. And they had that "based on real
documented evidence" line and the rest was history.
In that one opening shot, Scully looks exactly like the lady from "MathNet"
Thank you so much for bringing this up!!! I am not alone. I'm not the only
one who noticed this.
Someone please look at the opening credits and let me know if I'm right?

"It didn't say anything. I had to read it."
That was also the episode that featured Nomanissan Island, an old codger
named Jesse Motz (whose boat left from Motz Landing), Fishmonger
Airlines, Crusty the mechanic, the Brothers KARamazov (or was it
KaraMAzov), William Windom (sp?) as the judge, and the Next to the Last
National Bank.
I have been a fan of Mathnet for YEARS (ever since it came on TV when I
was 12) and have ALWAYS thought XF resembled it, to the point where I
actually wondered if CC took some uncredited inspiration from it. Sure,
it's a kids' show (a parody of Dragnet), but the dynamic between the two
leads (short, practical, brainy, solemn, by-the-book female and tall,
goofy, comic-relief-y, instinct-following male who remain absolutely
professional but just shy of flirtatious) and the show itself (two
completely deadpan, even when they're cracking jokes, detectives
investigate the "odd" cases for the LAPD that have a sort of
mathematical bouquet, all the while finishing each other's sentences and
managing to mesh beautifully despite their differing personalities) are
awfully similar to XF. I mean, this isn't a COMPLETELY novel concept,
but trust me, the resemblance is there and it's almost eerie in
retrospect.
In fact, it so happens that a friend and I are writing a crossover as we
speak. :)

I never thought Kate (or the other one) were ever flirty or red heads but
oh! Their dead-pan delivery and George's sweet naivete!

hee hee hee... I loved that show. My favourite Mathnet was the one with
the parrot and the missing inheritance. And just the other day I was
thinking of one that has a scene where Kate picks up the phone and hears
nothing but buttons being pressed. Can't remember anything else though.
And as I think back, it does remind me a lot of the X-Files.
Boy, I needed this trip to nostalgia land:).

I picked up on the flirtacious environment and I was only 11. Oneof them was
definitely red headed. Maybe not red like Scully, but a sort of
Auburn-reddish-brownish color.

I was just discussing XF similarities with friend the other day too! What a
coincidence.
My favorite part was when they whip out their calculators from the holsters,
and punch something in.

Little Louis lives!! "My wife was so fat, when she sat around the house,
she sat *around* the house!" I think I also learned "the angle of
incidence equals the angle of reflection" from that storyline, too.
SquareOne was awesome! I'll never forgot how I missed seeing the
San Francisco earthquake live during the beginning of Game 6 of the
1989 (?) World Series because I made a quick flip to watch the opening
of SquareOne. But then I started to feel my chair moving around...
Does anyone remember if there were any shipper lines between Kate and
George?
Take care,

Mathnet! I remember that! I used to love that show...
One of the good things about having a little brother is that it's an excuse to

Do you ever walk up to your neighbor and ask "Can you tell me how to get . .

And there's >>> alt.tv.mathnet <<<, which is about a year old now, IIRC.
Trivia: Didja know that MATHNET used the same building for the
exterior of their police station as ALIEN NATION (the series)?
Brush With Greatness:
I met MATHNET's Beverly Leech at a LeapCon (I think it was the
4th, in 1995) at the Burbank Airport Hilton. She was on one of the actor
panels due to her guest-starring role in "Sea Bride" (a 2nd season episode
in which her character got to *Tango* with TuxWearing!RoseInHisTeeth!Sam,
the lucky gal ... 8-) She was great! Like everyone else on the guest
actor panels -- and just about every other guest actor who has ever
appeared on QUANTUM LEAP -- she assured us that QL's was *the* friendliest
set (cast & crew) she'd ever worked on, that Scott Bakula was the *nicest*
guy she'd ever worked with/The Nicest Guy In Hollywood, etc. etc. etc..
(As they say, "The Man Is A Saint." O ;-)
At the autograph table, I summoned up the nerve to say that I'd
been a fan of hers ever since MATHNET ... and was relieved when she
reacted with warm surprise. She said I was the 2nd person in line so far
who'd mentioned the show, and that she had had no idea that anyone would
remember it. I think she said that it had been a fun show to work on.
Also, since this LeapCon was held shortly after her episode of
BABYLON 5 aired (she played Sheridan's visiting sister), I said I hoped
we'd see her again there. She said she hoped so too (at least, as much as
any actor can); and we agreed it was a good sign that they hadn't killed
her off by the end of the hour (in hindsight, not good enough, alas ...)
Finally, although I only asked to take a picture *of* her,
*she* also insisted that someone take a picture of us both -- and did the
MATHNET salute, with a totally deadpan Kate Monday expression on her face.
Wheeeee!

Coooooooool!
I remember Beverly Leech was in Alien Nation once, and on Days of Our
Lives for a while. Since then I haven't seen her except in a couple of
commercials.
She's in a commercial right now, actually. It's for Sony (?) Minidiscs.
It's one of a series of sequential ads. They're at a cocktail party, and
James Brolin lets her listen to his minidisc. She says, "This doesn't
sound like the kind of music James Brolin would listen to." He replies,
"But then, you're not really a James Brolin fan," and reaches behind her
head, ripping off the rubber mask she is wearing. She turns
into...someone else, I forget. :P
Same with Joe Howard (George) - commercials and nothing else (though I
heard he was in Grumpy Old Men 2 or something).

Frankly, that's it! And then they gave Kate the boot, brought in Pat
Tuesday, and I stopped watching. Just outgrew the whole Square One thing.
Don't think they were as nice to each other as Mulder & Scully, though.
Kate always had a SERIOUS sourpuss on, as far as I can remember! And
George was never the least bit schmoopy. ;)
