Having seen the first showing of him, I just want to say to all that he
will not ever replace Mulder. He is too nerdy, and effeminate looking.
He lacks "maleness" necessary in the character. He also doesn't come
across as dominating. If Mulder is every replaced, God Forbid!, I hope
they atleast try for someone who is physically appealing to the opposite
sex. Not a little young pup who is too thin, and looks like he should
be sitting behind a computer terminal. Hope I didn't offend anyone, but
I had to get this off my chest.
Belinda
Who could possibly take offense? Maybe people sitting behind computer
terminals, or people wondering what you mean by 'maleness,' or people
who think your view of a male character needing to 'dominate' is
dangerous and a little sad. Maybe people who don't think Mulder is
attractive just to the opposite sex (and, while we're here, let's
discuss why the sexes have to be opposite.)
Other than those people, I don't think you'll have a problem.

That's funny because my first impressions of DD as FM were that the actor
was not nearly traditionally "male enough" to be a compelling hero. He's
soft-spoken, tall but not commanding, and has an obvious innate
sensitivity. That package does not spell "traditional hero." But over
four-plus seasons, DD's stature portraying a wonderfully complex and even
contrdictory character grows. FM is a thinker, but also a man of action;
he's got sex on his mind all the time, but he's not about to pursue a
physical relationship with Scully, the one person on earth he's closest to.
He trusts his intuition and is subject to extreme swings in mood; this
ain't John Wayne! DD was an interesting choice, even a fortuitous choice,
to play the male lead in XF. If he must leave or reduce his on-screen
time, I'll bet that 1013 will find another interesting choice to carry the
load. And I for one found Chris Owens very credible as young CSM in
"Musings..." If he is the choice to "replace" DD, I'll be surprised, but,
who knows? He might work out.

Well, not that it is gospel or anything, but I did get an email from FOX saying

Okay, a few points.
1) There is no hard evidence that Chris Owens is intended to replace
David Duchovny (which seems to be the main reason people hate him). In
fact, CC has semi-denied this -- for what that's worth, which may not
be much ... but in any case, it's only a rumour.
2) Chris Owens did a very good job as young CSM and a perfectly decent
job in the rather small part of Mutato. It seems very probable that he
was told to play this character as dull, nerdy, slightly obnoxious in
a boring sort of way.
I'm still fairly certain we're going to see some revelations, at some
point, about his blood relationship to CSM, and perhaps Mulder. So
they've chosen to introduce him as a sort of stealth character;
someone who seems really uninteresting at first. That's a perfectly
valid way to play it. I also suspect that his future on TXF is not as
a New Mulder, but as a bad guy.
Also, I think they were trying to make Jeffrey Spender as _unlike_
young CSM as they could considering it's the same actor. I think that
was clear. His hair was very different. He was done up in a way that
emphasized, for instance, the weakness of his chin, while the look of
young CSM played that down. There could be a couple of reasons for
this. First of all, they want most viewers (i.e. the non-obsessive
kind who don't pore over the credits & recall the names of guest
actors from last season) not to twig right away that it's the same
guy. It's also possible they want to direct us more towards blood
relationship (similarities) than cloning (identical). It's even
possible that he's not related to CSM at all and that's why they're
trying to make him very different.
But in any event I think there were many purposeful choices being made
by the director, the actor, even the folks in make-up and
hairdressing. There's no point attacking Chris Owens just because of
rumours about what he's supposed to do in the future.

I think that the man who replaces Mulder should more typify the
average working man of the world. None of this wimpy ' Oxford
Educated Dandy ' stuff that we have now. He should be a large ,
overbearing , beer - gut of a man with major flaws, not just this
' porn addiction ' crap. That's not a flaw , any more than Scully
reading romance novels would be a flaw. We need a man who gambles
heavily , tries to seduce Scully at every opportunity and makes a
tidy sum off selling government secrets to supplement his
extravagent retirement plans. He also, of course has to be an
awesome criminal profiler. He would bully his way thru cases , not
taking any crap from anyone , certainly not from the vaccillating
Skinner . After a long day of busting Cancerman's b*lls he
would set himself down in his favourite watering hole and spend the
night trying to ply Tania the waitress with stories of alien
clones . He would have the gift of the blarney and he would not
need a bed at home because he would spend his nights with various and
sundry female companions at their apartments.
There is only one actor that typifies all these characteristics.
He would make a perfect Duchovny/ Mulder replacement . His Name is
Robbie Coltrane . He is Dr. ' Fitz ' Fitzgerald of the
British police series ' Cracker ' . He would make the perfect '
Mulder ' ,an unrelenting , ( unless they stopped paying him ) ,
fearless criminal profiler with enough flaws to keep newsgroups
occupied even thru the dog days of summer. It's amazing that CC
has not approached him yet with the roll . He would be awesome.

I gotta do a "ditto" here. If CC and Co. (that's you, Laura) can make an
interesting character out of this Spender dude, I don't care whether or not
he's replacing Mulder. Mulder can't be replaced, we ALL know that. There'll
NEVER be another Mulder. If they can make a "Spender" who's watchable and
evolved enough to carry out a storyline, I don't think the show will suffer.
So what if he's not cute? Lots of people watched Star Trek, didn't they?

I agree. We need to replenish the cast for the characters who have
died. Any new interesting character is welcome. They don't have to be
a replacement.
Laura the Co.
I don't like DD so I could care less if CO is supposed to replace him.The
character and the man however hold no appeal to me at least DD and Mulder did.
I've invested 5 years with Skinner ,CSM,Krycek and TLG and I am personally
ticked off that they felt the need to bring in someone new at this late date to
take yet more airtime from a supporting cast that has barely been on this year.

Who is the last new character that has been embraced by philes with open arms?
I mean, we've got Marita (definately not), and now Agent Spender's getting
bashed. I think we all have gotten to love the old characters... (I mean,
who's a character that's been on the show for a long time that gets bashed as
much as Marita or Spender?)...and dislike when CC decides to introduce somebody
new.

I can't HELP it, it's FUN to be BAD......
I don't know, a lot of people liked Suzanne Modeski and expressed a wish
she'd turn up again. Same for Kresge (though that seems unlikely.) And
Kresge did sort of do that quasi flirt with Scully, so it's not just the
idea that Marita is some sort of romantic rival.
I somewhat softened on Marita after coming to the conclusion that the
major problem was that alone amongst his informants she was given no
apparent agenda of her own; just to murmur breathily to Mulder and act as
someone else's catspaw. Her improvement this week when she was allowed to
do some backstabbing is further evidence.
I'm still not overly impressed with Laurie Holden, though. Steven
Williams was forced to make some pretty silly appearances with X, too,
and still always managed to imbue him with menace and charge.

It's funny--I noticed it almost right away last week, but didn't think
much of it--I just figured they were re-using the actor and hoping no
one would notice... I didn't really consider the connection 'til I
noticed a couple threads on 'Spender = CSM clone'...
And from the beginning of this episode I was sure (at least hoping) the
guy in the snow lodge was CSM... (At least they didn't spoil it with a
'William B. Davis' in the credits... ;) He he, I actually yelled 'yes'
several times aloud at that ending... Long live Cancer Man!!

So the whole reason that you watch the show is because Mulder looks
dreamy. It has nothing to do with the acting and writing. How old are
you?
Spender is not necessarily CSMs last name. Spender may be Cassandras
maiden name and her som may have taken it after his father abandoned
her.

Thanks, I was screaming that the entire time I was watching it (o.k.

I don't know about that. I was over a friends house the other day, and
they had a picture of his daughter (about 12 years old) with very
short hair and waring a man's suit. I thought the picture was very
funny, so I asked when it was taken (I thought maybe it was for a play
or something). As it turns out, it was a picture of my friend when he
was around 12 years old. Other than the suit and the short hair, you
could not tell him (as a young boy) apart from his daughter.
If a father and daughter could look that much alike, why not a father
and sun?

I was very happy to see CSM at the end of the show. He seems to have
recovered well, and looks healthy. The only weak part of the plot is
that if I am hiding in the wilds of rural Canada from an enormously
powerful organization that seemingly wants me dead...do I send letters
to my kid with a return address? That does not sound like something a
careful operative like CSM would do.

But he is hiding in Quebec. As you must have

him. They would not be able to ask directions

He put his return address on the letter because he's so damn cool and
whatever they throw at him he can take. He also put the return address
on it so Spender could send him a response (he was a little too hopeful
on that- but I guess he did get a response). It was a less than
triumphant return for the Cancer Man, but at least he's back lurking on
the fringes, waiting to come forth and reveal all kinds of information

I had noticed it too. My theory is that this is not just convenient
casting--there is something meant by it, specifically, Spender is Cancer
Man's clone. But wasn't Cancer Man supposed to be dead? Maybe Spender is a
young clone and the Canadian Backwoods Cancer Man is an old clone of the
Cancer Man we all know and, uh, love.

My problem with this cloning theory: Was the technology to clone humans in
place (eh... Spender's age...33?) three decades ago, in the XF universe? If
so, then what's the point? Cancer Man's vanity? I think he's just the
product of Cancer Man's baby gravy.
