ABOUT THIS LIST

If you're new to alt.tv.x-files, or even if you aren't, you may
have been confounded by all the inside jokes and random acronyms
that fly across your screen at any given moment. Well, this
document should help give you some idea what the hell these people
are talking about. I'm not going to go into much detail here,
as the list is already too long, but there will hopefully be
a web version by New Year's [editor's note - nope], which will
include hyperlinks to more information. In the meantime, search
the Web or USENET and you'll probably find a link in someone's
signature file.

This is NOT meant to replace any of the other FAQs or postings
for newbies, which I strongly suggest you read before you start
contributing to the group. It's actually meant to be more about
the newsgroup than the show itself.

alt.tv.x-files acronyms
-----------------------
ATX-F alt.tv.x-files (also ATX)

You are here. There are three other X-Files newsgroups,
alt.tv.x-files.creative (ATXC), alt.tv.x-files.x-ville
(ATXX) and alt.binaries.x-files (ABXF). Creative is for
fan fiction, and X-Ville is a role-playing environment
of sorts. Binaries is the place for any pictures or
sound files. If you post them to ATX-F, someone may
kill you.

OBSSE Order (of the) Blessed Saint Scully (the) Enigmatic
SWILS Straight Women In Love (with) Scully
GABAL Gillian Anderson Born Again Lesbians
GATB Gillian Anderson Testosterone Brigade

These are various associations of Gillian Anderson/Dana
Scully fans. GABAL came about when someone accused a
bunch of OBSSE members of being lesbians, I think. And
men can join GABAL, too, as most men are really lesbians
trapped in a man's body anyway. There's also the "Rogue
OBSSE," AKA The Kitchen Crew (don't ask me why) which is
to OBSSE what the Hamas is to the Palestinian Liberation
Organization, sort of. Some of these groups have mailing
lists and such.

DDEB David Duchovny Estrogen Brigade
SPCDD Society (for the) Prevention (of) Cruelty (to) David Duchovny

As you might guess, these are some of the more prominent
Duchovny/Mulder fan groups. There's also the Duchovniks
and the recently formed MulderMaidens, but those aren't
acronyms, so there!

CotHP Church of the Holy Partnership

A new subgroup of ATXF-ers that promotes the strength
of Mulder and Scully's partnership over the individual
talents of either character.

UST Unresolved Sexual Tension (typically between Mulder & Scully)

CoC Cult of Cusack
FFP (Harrison) Ford Focused Philes
jFFP (Jodie) Foster Focused Philes

A couple of "fan associations" that revolve around other
actors/actresses. The Cult of Cusack started a tongue-
in-cheek movement to have Cusack replace Duchovny as
Mulder when DD's contract ended, and proceeded to get
totally out of hand.

CoG Cult of Gizzie (in six installments)

If you've read the newsgroup, you don't need to know why
the "Cult of Gizzie" exists. If not, you need to read the
newsgroup more often.

ggg Guerilla Grammar Girls

A *highly selective* (read: small) group of a.t.x-fers who
take their language seriously.

MUTS Mutual Unabashed Torture Society

According to Megadee..."Like making fun of your ATX buds?
Me too." 'Nuff said.

IRKSOME Infobahn Road Kill: Study, Observation, Modification, (and)
Extermination

Formerly WASTE (World Alliance (for) Study (of) Trolls (and)
E-Scum, this is an effort to make trolls and spammers and
other newsgroup annoyances go away. An uphill battle to
be sure, led by the intrepid Beagle.

SYD Small Yappy Dog

The late Queequeg was of the SYD variety. Took me a couple
of posts to figure this one out.

Other a.t.x-f inside jokes and references
-----------------------------------------
X-Philes...the "phile" suffix, meaning one who likes something,
happens to fit quite nicely with the name of the show, so
this has become shorthand for "X-Files fans."

Mytharc...is the term used for the episodes that have to do
with aliens and/or the big government conspiracy to either
cover up the knowledge of said aliens, or to distract the
public with a flimsy cover-up of these alleged aliens in
order to hide deeper secrets.

Monster of the Week (MOTW)...the term given to the XF episodes
that *don't* have to do with aliens or the big government
conspiracy, usually involving some sort of monster, and very
rarely lasting more than the one episode, hence the name.

!Mulder or !Scully...have become a sort of shorthand for
describing our favorite agents, depending on what they
were doing (such as Action!Mulder or Kickass!Scully).
It's sort of a combination of designations for hypo-
thetical action figures, although I don't know if any
past or current ones use this convention, and computer
programming notation. For example, old Unix systems
used a lot of exclamation points in e-mail addresses,
at least for internal e-mail, I think.

Moose and Squirrel...happen to start with the same letters
as Mulder and Scully, so the nicknames have stuck. Don't
know if there are any deeper parallels between our intrepid
agents and Rocky & Bullwinkle.

Shippers...short for "Relationshippers," meaning a.t.x-fers
that want to see Mulder and Scully in a relationship. Joe
Ramirez has identified two varieties - shippers of necessity
and shippers of desire, but I don't have space to explain
that here.

NoRomos...short for "No Romance," as in between FM & DS

Sick!Chicklets...are a.t.x-f regulars who are, how to say it politely,
a little "touched in the head." You can tell because they will
immediately pervert the phrase "touched in the head." Founded
by VerLaine Henn, the original Sick!Chickie, all Sick!Chicklets
have an animal totem.

Second Salmon...are fans of much-maligned writer John Shiban.
Legend has it that his script for "Teso Dos Bichos" went
through so many revisions, each on a different colored paper,
that it made it to the salmon-colored paper twice.

Trust Snow One...will hopefully catch on as the name of choice
for fans of XF music man Mark Snow. Credit Christopher Cole
for that one, even if he *is* from Northwestern.

Roos...short for kangaroos, but I have no idea why. Leigh Anne
knows, but she's not telling.

psy<cho<paths...a Cusack reference, from Grosse Pointe Blank.
Incidentally, if you take I-94 from Chicago towards Milwaukee,
you pass under Gross Point Road.
