~~~Archival Sites for X-Files Fan Fiction (version 4.2)~~~
This list is *constantly* under construction - If there's a non-
listed archive you believe should be included, please email me
its URL and the archivist's addy (if possible).
Okay, this is a list of archives with descriptions I will be posting
every once in a while to help all of us. Also, I'm including a
list of easily accessed news services to help all those with
patchy newsfeeds. If I've missed *anything* you think
important or I have made mistakes - let me know!
Gossamer Project Archives: (taken from the Gossamer Project FAQ)
The Gossamer Project is a group of specialty archives that,
combined, contain all of the X-Files fan fiction that authors wish to
have archived. Vincent Judovalkis opened the original Gossamer
Archive in the spring of 1995 and the Gossamer Project was born
when he announced its closing in the spring of 1996. It has steadily
grown since then and has split off into different specialty archives
with different archivers for different types of fan fiction.
These four sites contain completed stories. The content and
listings are the same from site to site.
If, due to technical problems or just excessive traffic during certain
times of the day, you can't get into one archive, please try another
one. If the problem persists, drop the archivist a note so they can
contact the technical support people. Several of these sites use
tables and that can be a problem with some browsers, but the ones
who do offer a text index so everyone should be able to access the
stories.
Both the USA and Australian sites are updated a couple of times a
week and the site in Finland is updated biweekly. The UK site has
unfortunately stopped adding new stories, but it still contains all
the stories archived through the end of November 1996.
Please inform Natasha of an inaccuracies or miscategorizations
you find on the site. This project is in the early stages and they
are still working the kinks out of the system. Natasha's hope is to
have the authors rate and classify their own work. She has no
plans to write any summaries, but volunteers are working to
categorize all of the stories. They are trying to archive all the
new XF creative works using the same guidelines that Vincent
used. The story summaries and classifications are an extra (and
optional) feature they've added to the archives. Your work will
still gladly be archived if you do not wish to have your work
classified or provide them with summaries.
Natasha can't archive and keep up with the story summaries at the
same time, so Adam Lee (Boris) and she are working together. He is
doing the archiving and she am taking care of the html pages.
Natasha stays about a week behind him adding new stories to the
US pages. If your story is not listed at his site, drop him a note
or send it to him. Usenet is notoriously unreliable, so don't
assume that he has it if you don't see it there... Please send any
requests for changes in story titles, summaries and things like
that to Natasha and she will make the changes for both of them.
Contact the archivists at: < goss...@akamail.com>
Please send your summaries to <goss...@akamail.com> or just include
the information at the top of your story when you post it. If you
have any questions or comments, drop Natasha a note. If you do
not wish to have your story rated or classified, please let her
know that also.
SPECIAL NEWSREADERS
1. Zippo
http://drn.zippo.com/news-bin/wwwnews?alt.tv.xfiles.creative
This is a web newsreader, a free service for its unrestricted groups.
Usually, this is quite complete and up-to-date, and articles can be
sorted several ways. It's especially good for finding parts of a
multi-part story. The zippo site holds articles for about 8-10 days.
2. Deja News
http://www.dejanews.com/
You're going to have to configure the newsreader for yourself ...
(A little explanation - it took me a while to figure it out)
1. On the Main page, click on 'Features'
2. On the 'Features' page, click on Deja Read News, if you just want
to read the newsgroup. If you want to do other fun things, look
around here.
How about this ... Deja News keeps archives of the newgroups going
back to March '95. Do a power search on a name, and you can find
almost everything that person has posted since early in '95.
3. After clicking on Deja Read News, you're going to get a screen
with a box with some newsgroup names. Delete the nonsense in the box,
and type in whichever newsgroups you're looking for. Then hit 'read
news'
4. Next page confirms your newsgroup choices, and asks you how many
days of articles you wish. BOOKMARK THIS PAGE!!!!!!!!
5. Start reading!
Updated March 2 1997
Thanx to Deirdre for most of this text!
