Here's a question for everyone, whether you've been around for a while or not.
This is both for the sake of discussion and for a new part of my website that
I've been working on, so please toss me some good answers.

~~What fics do you consider "classics?" They can be recent or from the
beginning of the show's run, it doesn't matter. I'm talking about fics that
are well known, and considered the best, ones that you'd recommend to people
who are just getting into the whole fanfic scene.
~~Also, if you're willing, tell me why you think it's "classic," just a short
little blurb that I can quote on my site. This is definitely not essential.
I'll be happy with titles and authors. If you're more comfortable emailing me
directly, go for it.

And for the record, if I don't get a nice crop of fic titles, I'm coming back
and tormenting y'all some more until I'm satisfied. <g>

Have a great evening, everybody.

Regards!

Weeeell -

Lara Means as a series called "Conversation Hearts" - those can be
found in Gossamer.

*Anything* by Dreamshaper. (Gossamer)

Rachel Anton's "Eleventh Hour", "Pandora's Box", "Eat it Too",
and "Volition Unbound" (She's also got some killer Krycek fics)
(Gossamer)

I personally have a lot that I'm proud of, you'll have to judge them
for yourself though http://xffortress.hollywood.com

Ooh.. "Cheapened Things" by MD1016 (Gossamer)

If you're into NC-17 MSR, try Shannon and Brandon's site :
http://shannono.simplenet.com/fandg/

I have a soft spot for "Backstop" by Fialka - seeing as it's the first
fic I ever read. I don't know if Gossamer has it, but Fred & Ginger
do, as does the Haven.

MystPhile has a novel legnth series called "2008" that's cool

Lydia Bower is another author to look for her colabortation with Alanna
on "Doors" was incredible.

Jenna Toom's "Fumbling Towards Ecstacy"

Dasha K's "Frozen"

Um... other author's in general - Jori Remington, Beduini, Terma99,
Annie Sewell-Jennings , Trixie, MoJoBer (just Mojo on Goss I think)...

Again, though - if you're looking for Classics - the first three
Dreamshaper, Lara Means, and God - Rachel Anton. They're the best.

(those three are also *really* good are replying to feedback)

Did that help?

I'd say anything by Lydia Bower, as it is all superbly written with
fantastic characterisation and that edge of literary elegance that makes
them more than just a story. You can find her stuff archived under 'Bower'
(strangley enough) in the Gossamer archive.

As for other stuff, geez I've read so much it all kinda blends into one for
me. But Lydia's stand out.

As one of the "Old Guard" who's been here since 1994, my list of
"classics" is *long*. But here's what pops off the top of my head as
a few of the fics that I recommend to people starting out in XF fandom:

12 Degrees of Separation - Anne Haynes
The "Sonnets" series - Anne Haynes
And Death Shall Have No Dominion - Jean Helms
Dance Without Sleeping - Lydia Bower
The "Downtime" series - Sheryl Martin
Blinded by White Light - Dasha K.
Corpse - Livengoo
Vengeance - Juliettt

There are dozens more, but this is a good start. Most of these stories
are long and go back a few years, but in my mind they're essential in
grasping the possibilities in XF fic and in the series itself. A
"classic" to me denotes a story that I not only love to read again and
again, but one that has an impact on the community and shapes our
continued perceptions of these characters in fanfic and on the show.
After six years of reading ATXC, writing fanfic and watching the show, my
vision of Moose and Squirrel is often hazy--an amalgamation of what I
read, what I see on screen, and what I want to be. The best fic reminds
me that none of those perceptions are wrong.

FWIW...

For me it's Karen Rasch. My first intro to XF fanfic was reading "No
Greater Love". Then the "Words Series". I can say I have read those
stories at least a hundred million times. ;o)

Gotta have Iolokus by Mustang Sally and Rivka T. to your website.

Fantastic character development. Smutty smut and lusty lust. Killer
**excellent** conspiracy story line incorporating the show's previously
developed and sadly dropped Consortium doings.

Kipler's "Strangers and the Strange Dead"

Its a fairly recent story but the first paragraph alone makes it an instant
classic.

Try "ELS" by Dawson Rambo as well as his "Umbra"
and if you are looking for something different try the "Magician Series" by
Jennifer Lyon & Susan Bickerstaffe
A couple of others are:
Erlona's Heart
Hiding out
Antidote
Iolokus
Desideratum
That should occupy you for about a month or two.

Someone already mentioned Livengoo's "Corpse," but I have to put in a vote for
Goo & Amperage's "Oklahoma" too. Dang, they write great Muldertorture....

For a slightly different slant from the stories already mentioned, I'd also go
with anything by LuvMulder and/or Anonymous. Anonymous has some great
Profiler!Mulder stuff in her library.

Wow people have hit just about all my faves except for Martin's "Dragon"
series. Jeese that was one of my first reads, as was "Umbra" and "ELS" by
Dawson. Those are all fantastic "romances" with really good stories too.

Then there is "Etched." If you have not read this go to Gossamer or the Annex
right now and do so. Even if you don't like "Alien" you will like this one.
Wow, it is just a great story.

"April Is the Cruelest Month" by LoneGunGuy is a definite classic crossover and
funny too.

"And Chaos Shall Reign - The Collector's Edition" by Kronos. Powerful writing,
tortured lovers, how can you not love it?

"The Triangle Series" by Susan Jameson. Now I do not normally read slash but I
read this a cried...a lot. The sheer power her words evoke is amazing. You
cannot help but laugh, and cry, and sympathize. It is just so incredible. Maybe
I got such an emotional response from this because of my own past, but even
those who have no "gay" friends cannot help but love this novel. And the MSR in
it...the best out there. The BEST.

Ok now back to my reading...

A couple more for you if time allows...

JoAnn Humby's "Another Swim" (NC-17)
A post-"Elegy" follow-up that's on her web site at
http://www.ctv.es/USERS/jhumby/XF.htm
Those who liked the angst and tension crackling between M&S in "Elegy"
would be advised to head over to this story post haste for another hefty
dose. Great characterization, imagery and compelling dialogue.

Madeleine Partous's "Hollow Man" (NC-17)
Perhaps the best piece of straight Mulderangst I've ever read and set to
the harsh strains of one of my favorite poets -- T.S. Eliot. Not for the
faint of heart, but an excellent journey into the dark caverns of Mulder's
motivations and obsessions. Try Gossamer.

Loch Ness's "Letters of Transit" (NC-17) and "Solar Flare" (R)
It doesn't get more classic than this. "Letters of Transit" is something
of a post-Colonization arc story, but set to the tune of the film,
"Casablanca." It features strong characterization, great use of secondary
characters and a wonderful interpretation of the mytharc. Oh, and did I
mention the MSR?? All in a concise, complete and succinct package of
wonderful and imaginative writing.

On a completely different note is LN's "Solar Flare." This is a
self-contained case file story, which also segues the somewhat disjointed
season 4 eps "Demons" and "Gethsemane" into each other quite skillfully.
Fantastic for its examination of dark, angsty and sometimes tragic issues
faced by Mulder and Scully as they rushed headlong into the cataclysm of
the cancer arc.

**AN IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT LOCH NESS's FANFICTION**
I just received word that her archives, including the TeXas Files, are
going to be closed down as of October 31. I don't know if her fiction is
archived any place else (I know it's not on Gossamer), so if you want to
read or download these excellent stories, you should visit the site
(http://lonestar.texas.net/~lochness/) before it goes dark for good.

No - I think Deborah Goldstein wrote "And Death Will Be Our Darling".
Humungous great story, with killer angst - I recommend it. And Jean Helms'

Ok, tempted as I am to rec myself... <innocent look> What?

I have to say that while there are lots of really great "classic" fics that
are older, I'd like to rec some that I think are WONDERFUL and newer.

These are my top four fanfics ever. This does not impinge on my enjoyment of
many, many other fanfics (notice concerned buttkissing), but these are my
all-time faves and I haven't seen any of them mentioned.

"Contact High" by Penumbra. It's on Haven's latest fic update, but it was
written as a "Field Trip" post-ep. Smutty, sexy and incredibly written.
Totally original and every time I read it I think... Damn, why didn't I
write that? Plus it's way, way too smart. I had to look up words. I've got a
friggin' writing Masters and I had to look up words. God, I love that.
Penumbra rocks my little fic world.

"Make Much of Time" by Ambress. Some people have asked, after my recent
Mulder-first-time fic, for a Scully-sequel. I've been referring them to
this, which is simply the best Scully-first-time fic EVER WRITTEN and is way
sexier than anything I could do. Anything by Ambress is excellent in every
way.

"Dance Card" by Sabine. Another one I wish, wish, wish I'd written. Damn
fine language. It has a smutty sequel whose name escapes me. They should be
read one right after the other for full effect. Also smart and almost too
well written... It deserves to something other than fic. The New Yorker
should call soon.

"Never" by Allison Kinney. The damn sexiest thing. I can't explain it, but I
could read it 1,000 times and it's still sexy. UndercoverMulder!fic. It gets
me every time. And I never think about what they do in this fic. Never.

You will note that all of the above involve smut. I have no idea why that
is... <innocent look again>

Damn straight!! "Contact High" was one of the first stories I read last
year. I was completely hung up on Field Trip, watched it obsessively while
ironing, etc. Penumbra's use of the English language is phenomenal, my kind
of writing, lots of creative imagery, but not so much that you are
distracted by it. If you've ever been under the influence of anything,
whether alcohol or prescription medicines, or anything (cough) illegal, you
will recognize the mood and mind swings Scully experiences. The first
paragraph or two will hook you completely. And the steamy parts...well!

I've exhorted Penumbra to add on, to write another part of the story (the
last few paragraphs will explain why), but her muse has taken her off into
different directions. :-) Her latest piece is a pre-Dreamland
one--recently posted -- what was the name of it? It's awesome too.

Great classic fics, which ones to choose?
well I will list my faves by catagory.

If baby fic is your thang ( and since Scully is now in the family way)I
would recomend A thimble for Peter, which you can find at the annex.and
Snow by lovethebeeze which is at Gossamer. both great fics not mushy, and
no use of Fox or Dana(ugh!)
also Surreal Thing by invesibellium is in my mind one of the best post
recquim fics out there.

If you like to mix food and smut then Leftovers by Terma 99 is real
tasty, as well as Eat it too,by Rachel Anton.

Just plan ole smut then try Defining Exactly,By Beduini, Inversion
Layer, by Blackwood,Time by Terma 99 and many more that I can't remember
them all.(I read way too much smut)

For case files try Gods Breath by Jintan, An alluring Indescrsion by
Beduini, and Hegria (don't remember the author) are all good and can be
found at empemeral or gossamer.

Alternant universe, Blinded by the white light,by Dasha K is in my mind
the best there is.also Promises to keep,by Prufrocks love is also very
good although I don't think it qualifys as AU though.

Hope this helps.

'Cellphone' by Marasmus... anything by Marasmus.<g>

Mustang Sally and Rivka T's 'Tikkun Olam' made an
impact and was both brilliant and twisted at the same time.

Caz Q's 'The Furious Winter' is fantastic. Beautiful, tragic,
and with some of the best lines. A biased vote since it's
possibly my favourite XF fic. It got quite a lot of on-newsgroup
replies as well, so there was definitely ripples from it.

wen has got a wonderful and unconventional prose style,
and has some moving stories. Errr... go with 'ordinary things'
for a story.

'The Actor' is always mentioned whenever someone asks for
Scully/Other that ends in MSR. It's also damn good.
Characterisation of all is sympathetic and Scully's romance
is utterly believable.

Soap & Eggs is another highly recc'ed by me. Sad, but written
very well. Very good characterisation.

Oh yeah, and everything else everyone has mentioned. I
won't go any further 'cause I'll just all the authors and stories
that have made an impact on me, but I have absolutely no clue
about anyone else. I also haven't read all the replies, so I hope

If you want to read mine thanks in advance, if not that's ok too, I
hope you like the others I suggested. They are truly the classics. :)

Originally I just mailed this, but now I'm thinking what the heck, I'll
share. <g>

Many of these are older. Some of them are not. Old or new, they
rocked my world, and in a few instances, I could probably recite a line
or two just because they made such an impression. Good cripes, some of
you peeps are talented! There are *so* many more, and I'm still
looking, but these came to mind right away:

-I have to say I think Jill Selby may write one of the most compelling
Scullys on the block. If you haven't yet read “Mediocrity's Allure,”
run, don't walk, to her site. Toss in cancer arc-era Scully and some
dire straits, and you’ve got a top tenner, for sure.

-A sentimental favorite remains Juliettt’s “Vengeance.” It was the
first fic I ever read, and the raw emotion it works up to so early in
our experience with the show still amazes me. J3XF can do Scully.

-Karen Rasch’s “Coming Back” rings so true to the sense of propriety
and sweetness this relationship is capable of, that it blows my mind
with every re-read (there have been several). ALSO tack on Karen’s “No
Greater Love,” and she’s made a fan out of me.

-Anne Haynes’ “Twelve Rites of Passage” has one of the best, reach out
and grab ya openings I’ve ever read. And I read and I read and I...<g>

-Elizabeth Boyd-Tran. Her “Ashes...” series had me holding my breath
as I read how achingly and lovingly she lets us see Scully through
Mulder’s eyes. I don’t know how many fic folks have read it, but it’s
not enough.

-Pellinor’s “Another Country” ... Alternative universe fic here. I
finished reading it one morning about 2 a.m., and I swear I literally
sat in front of this computer and stared slack-jawed at this screen for
ten solid minutes before I could get up and go numbly to bed. This
author has gracefully moved on to other endeavors in life, and it
*still* makes me want to cry. I likewise recommend
Pellinor’s “Resurgam.” It broke my heart for these characters...like
15 times. It’s not a case file, but rather a “what if” fic that the
reader won’t soon (read *ever*) forget. And this writer has darn near
the highest sense of the written English word that I’ve ever read in
fan fiction.

-EpurSeMouve – “Soap and Eggs” From title to credits it’s one of the
most engaging fics I’ve read. EPur had me in the prologue. And since
it was my option, I voted an enthusiastic *YES* for the unofficial
ending.

-CazQ - “The Furious Winter.” That last line ran through me like a
dagger. I very nearly puddled up and dissolved in a pile of Kleenex
and snot (too much information?) and tears. Caz wears me out ever time.

“Restitution” – the Redux II novelization by AllianceX...a labor of
love shared among some of the most gifted TXF fanfic authors on the
wire. It is *awesome.*

So them's my initial thoughts. I see two of my favorite people up
there, Harper and Caz. <waves> Love you girls!

I rarely post here, but I have lurked (and read) for quite some time. Most of
my favorites have been mentioned already...with these few exceptions.

- "Angelis" by CiCi Lean, practically every single line of this story is a
killer.

- "Butterflies All Tied Up" by Bugs, at turns wildly hilarious and incredibly
moving.

- The various works of Khyber, of which "Reach" remains my favorite.

- The MSRs of Rachel Arlington, "Spin" and "One Love" feature some of the best
sex I've ever read.

- Punk Manuverability's various works, "Navigation" being a personal fave,
though all her stories are worthy of high praise.

- I can't find it on Gossamer, but I read a vignette by an author named "Wen"
sometime ago -- the title was something along the lines of "Flowers Pressed
Against My Skin" -- that was very moving and filled with beautiful imagery.

Finally, I'd like to echo the last poster's praise of Pellinor's work. She is
an often overlooked author who, IMHO. deserves inclusion in the X-fic pantheon
along with Haynes, Partous, Rasch, Bower, Shalimar, Rambo, et. al. She also
developed Deep Background, a wonderful online resource for fanfic readers and
writers alike.

Relurking swiftly,
JS

Oh, gosh... sorry, but I have to toss my two pennies in somewhere...

12 Rites of Passage and 12 Degrees of Separation by Anne Hayes were what really
inspired me to write and get more into fanfic. Just incredible...

The Dragon series and Downtime series by Sheryl Martin are wonderful. Jackie
is great, isn't she? :::sigh::: Still two of my favourite series. It's a shame
that a Downtime cannot be written now...

Warning: Love Can Make You Drowsy is my favourite Punk Maneuverability fic.
It's funny, and best of all, it feels like it could happen. She's a very
inventive author.

The Emily Series (I cannot think of what it's called... is that the name?) by
RocketMan blew me away, in terms of mythology and ambiguity about Mulder and
Scully's relationship. A good read, and not a million years long...

Cheapened Things or the new series by MD1016 are really great works. I don't
usually like WIP, but this one is so wonderful, I cannot imagine it any other
way.

Of course, Iolokus and Tikkun Olam by MustangSally and RivkaT. I kept hearing
about Iolokus, and I finally gave in and read it. I'm glad I read it; the
characterization, story, mood, and Mooselet (I'm sorry, I probably spelled that
horribly wrong)... everything was wonderful.

This sounds intriguing. Where can I find it?

<waves back> Hey, Luce! <g>

Since I'm here, there's an author I forgot to mention whom I think
could be regarded in the "classic" category - Annie Sewell-Jennings.
Top-class writer. Just pick any stories of hers and put it under classic.
She's also currently making waves in the Buffy fic fandom, as well,
and rightly so.

<<<out of the deep dark past of atxf and atxfc climbs philebrarian to ring
in with her votes from the early days of atxfc>>>

I've been reading people's lists with interest and gone back and read some
of the stories that I didn't read the firt time around... but I see the
early days of atxfc are under-represented so... for those who weren't
around then, these are my personal favorites from from 1994-1996

If you have not read Kelly Matthews-Simmons' "Gemma" -- DO SO !
It is breathtaking. It's available at Gossamer but here's help finding it:
http://fluky.gossamer.org/html/author-m-4.html
(read her others too... they're great! but Gemma is a masterpiece)

The next is *must**read* is Sarah Stegall's "The Sound of Windchimes"
at Glassamer: http://fluky.gossamer.org/html/author-s-10.html

(both of the above are decidedly NC-17)

Peggy Lee's "Frostbite"
at Gossamer http://fluky.gossamer.org/html/9503_1.html
(this one only seems to be at the date listings, not in the author
listings, don't know why...)

and Sue Esty's (also known as Windsinger) "Do Not Go Gentle"
at Gossamer: http://fluky.gossamer.org/html/author-e-2.html

Then of course there's Sheryl Martin's Dragon series which is fun... and a
couple of others of hers that I particularly like are the "Downtime"
series and "Curiosity" Sheryl's stuff is nearly all at Gossamer too

Well, a lot of stories have already been named...I thought I might add a
few older ones (although one or two new ones might have snuck in...) By
older, I mean, in general, ones from 1998 and earlier. There are many
older stories that I loved but cannot remember the titles...argh! And
many of the authors are no longer posting stories here...but...anyway...

"Dogged Determination" by Rhondda Lake - Gotta love a story with M&S and
puppy dogs! ;)

"Sound of Silence" by GirlGone - Nice and dark...the way I like 'em.

"Antidote" by Karen Rasch and Rachel Howard. Go read it now!

"Ever After" - by Jill Selby (of course, anything by Jill is excellent!
and someone already named "Mediocrity's Allure")

"Missing Voices" by Joyce McKiggen, Meredith, & MCA

""Beyond Fragile" by Leyla Harrison - No one has ever covered this topic
as well as Leyla.

"The Furious Winter" by CazQ

"A Thin Veneer" by Analise

"Erlona's Heart" by MD1016 - Let's see, I've re-read this one about a
billion times!

"Tempest" by Missy Pennington

"Ensky" by viXen

"The Magician" by Suzanne Bickerstaffe & Jennifer Lyon

and newer ones here:

"Goshen" by Bone Tree - newer, but definitely on my To Read Over and Over list.

"Blood Oranges" by syntax6

and all of David Hearne's stories cause he simply NAILS southern
characterization....

Oh! and...

"Tiger Complex" - and I cannot for the life of me remember the author.
But this was a great story...a nail biter and terrific adventure.

I didn't mention some that have already been listed here (Sheryl, Karen,
Nicole, etc... forgive me. You know I love everything you gals write!)

Oh, thank GOD for Philebrarian, I was starting to think that no one else out
here had actually been reading since the early days of fic.

Did someone define "Classic" when this thread started? Personally, I have read
a few stories in the past year or so that I thought were marvelous but I think
something has to be around for awhile and be remembered by the fic community to
qualify. Therefore, although I adored Summer's "Code," I wouldn't call it a
'classic,' at least not yet. See what I mean?

That having been said, here are a few that I think do qualify:

- Karen Rasch's entire "Words" series. Maybe the definitive MSR smut classic.
Somebody already said this, right?

- Loch Ness's "Letters of Transit". The best crossover ever written.

- ViXen's "The Wish", I, II, and III

- Shalimar's "Playing Goddess"

- RivkaT, "Fugue" -- the angst classic

- Dawson Rambo's "ELS" and "Sixty"...probably he has more stories that deserve
to be called 'classic' but their titles are escaping me right now

- Rachel Howard's "Point of Origin" and "Gypsy".

- Jane Mortimer's "The Sin Eater"

- I think Rachel Lee Arlington's "Wrestling with the Devil" was the first
really good Scully/Krycek I ever read...not sure this qualifies it for
'classic' status but it definitely deserves a mention.

- Someone HAS to have included Livengoo/Amperage's "Oklahoma," and Amperage's
"Therapy" right? If not, well, duh.

- "Invocation," by The Pen Name

There are a bunch of stories out there that are clearly 'classics' even though
I don't personally like them -- the Magician series, for one.

Ikon, who is being a little picky about the use of the word 'classic' today
