All,

I've only just subscribed to this group a week or so ago, and I've been
enjoying it very much. Some of the stories here are really very good.

I do have one request, though. In the week or so I've been here, I've
gotten multiple postings of some =very= long stories. Now I don't know how
you all access the 'net, but since I'm accessing through a commercial
service, I am charged for all this time I spend grabbing posts. Today's
repeats took around 40 minutes. I realize that some of you missed things,
but is this the usual around here?

I don't have a solution to this, but if I see that someone posts a request
for a story I've just recently downloaded, it's very likely that it's still
in my system (I =think= the posts hang around for 2 weeks, though I could be
wrong). I would be more than happy to try to forward it to you, if you say
someone please email it to me. (It takes a =lot= less time for me to
forward than to download the entire thing over again--that's the way my
comm. program works.) If I send it, I will post a note so others know I've
forwarded it and not send you multiple copies. I would ask that anyone else
who forwards anything, please do the same.

Thanks,

THESUe

Steve, Alan,

The way it works here on Delphi, at least with the FrontEnd (OLR) I use,
Dlite, is that is logs on and grabs all the messages in a given newsgroup,
and once you've done a pass and are offline, you can pick and choose to your
heart's content. I just can't tell it to go get messages X, and Z, but not
Y, IYKWIM. The only division I seem to be able to make is by day, which
doesn't help much--i.e. if I want some messages for a given day, I can
either get them ALL, or go online and run up my bill that way, so it's not
much of a choice. And Alan, alt.tv.x-files.creative.stories really wouldn't
help if I want to read the stories, which I do. And I also like the
comments and discussions. It's the =multiple= postings of those HUGE
stories I'm talking about. But thanks for trying. :-)

I suggested posting requests for email because to forward something it
takes me maybe 5 minutes (doing it live online), as opposed to downloading
for 40 or 50 minutes. I understand that there are people listed in the
FAQ that are willing to email folks stories they missed, which is great. I
am willing to do my share, too.

I don't mean to bitch about this, I just hope people realize that not
everyone has free access.

Oh, btw, to answer your question, Steve, I didn't know anything about not
being able to get alt.tv.x-files.creative. I put it in my usenet SIG and it
seems to be working. I wish I had that much luck with the Delphi Anglophile
SIG! I can't get =that= to work and it's part of Delphi!

Err well I pay 1c a min which I assume is a lot less then delphi but,
the news group is here for posting stories and discussion isnt it?
Ive never used delphi but will next week with that trial offer but,
cant you just skip the messages/stories you have and not read them or
do you toss all the mail into a file or what? Since I dont know anything
about delphi and should just shut up my only suggestion would be a
alt.tv.x-files.creative.stories where the stories are posted and
then discussed in here? Personally i dont see the point but if it would
make things easier on others then Im for it.l8r.

I don't know about Delphi, but different services work differently. For
instance, Compuserve provides an on-line Usenet newsreader, but charges
$9.60 per hour for Usenet (on a 9600-14.4K baud line).

Some people use a SLIP connection, which is a direct connection to the
Internet. This means they can't log onto a host system and browse
just the messages they're interested in, 'cuz their computer *is* the
host. If they want to browse messages in a newsgroup, they have to get a
newsfeed, which transfers *all* the messages in the newsgroup to their
computer so that they can view it locally with a newsreader.

From what I've heard about Delphi (which is very little), it seems that
users access Usenet by downloading the articles and using an offline
reader. This may be a limitation of the system, or simply a desire by
the users to reduce connect charges. But in any case, I don't think the
users are able to pick and choose which articles they can download
(someone correct me if I'm wrong). This is another reason why it is
recommended that people not post binaries in these groups.

BTW, Sue ("The Sue") - I thought Delphi didn't give you access to the
.creative group - I remember qIra telling me that. Has their policy
changed?

Oh I see its basically like a QWK or BWAVE mail reader used on BBS's.
Errm yeah ok I guess reposts could be cut down.. I guess. Good news
though. Seems the Vorlon FTP site will be back soon so instead of requesting
a repost hopefully we can just FTP it. BTW are you at 2400?
Just you said getting mail takes 40-50 mins and it used to take
me that long back in the ol 2400 days.

Yep, Alan, I'm at 2400. I don't know about QWK or BWAVE, though.

Ah well. As long as that reposting of huge stories isn't a regular thing,
I'm cool with everything else.
