I'm a movie nut and I amuse myself endlessly come Oscar time, with
predictions of nominations, who will win, who deserve to win, who was
robbed out of getting nominated, etc. (I know, I know, I've basically
admitted that I have no life. Like that's new :)

Since the Spooky nominations began this morning, I wonder whether it
might be fun to look back the year in fanfic and speculate what'a gonna
happen. As I don't write fics but I like yammering on this board, I
have to think of ways to get my ya-ya's out another way! BTW, Texxas
Rose, if you'd rather I don't do this, just let me know and I'll be fine
with that.

It's interesting that some of the fics I've enjoyed over the last few
months seem to be missing from the eligibility list, such as profrock's
stories and Rachel Howard's finally completed "Above Rubies" which I
thought was grand. It had probably the best Krycek characterization
I've ever read. I couldn't think of anything I've read that came close,
except perhaps the Scatter series by Vehemently, but I think those were
written a couple of years ago. ANYhoo, I guess this has to do with
archiving policies or something.....but hey, what do I know?

For novel length stories, Fialka's "Arizona Highways". It wouldn't
surprise me if AH also win for X-files, and best Scully
characterization. I'm weeny bit biased where AH is concerned, it being
my favorite X-Files fic of all time and all.....but here it is. Another
great one is DashaK's "Blinded by White Light".

For Vignettes; I really loved CazQ's "Long Lowering Hour". Another one
I remember is Tara Avery's "Tourniquet" which is not on the Eligibility
list for some reason.

Mid-Length story: Coin Toss between Kipler's "Strangers and the Strange
Dead" and JET's "Night Giving Off Flames"

X-Files: V. Salmone's "Second to Last Seven Eleven", Justin Glasser's
"Lonely Nightmare", syntax6's "Blood Oranges" and AH, of course! Do
mytharc stories count as X-Files? I'd include Rachel's "Above Rubies"
if it were eligible.

Best series: "Life During Wartime" stories. Sue Schramm's
"Serendipity" series is cool, too.

I'll refrain from going over the rest of the categories for now. What
are some of your picks? Feel free to rec storie you feel will likely be
igonored in a shameless attempt to influence the voters.

All this is just another devious way of soliciting recs, in case I
missed some great fics in the past year.

It's because some authors did not want their stories included. Please
don't blame the archivists or attribute it to anything other than
authors choosing not to participate.

Sorry, did that sound accusatory? Did I over-react? My apologies. I
had just come from a chat where I'd heard something similar, and it
raised my "defend the archivists" radar. :)

BTW, the Spooky site looks great, is running great. Go team!

Yes. There have been Spooky announcements every week all year long. If
the authors somehow have missed ALL of them, their fans could have
checked the lists before the eligibility closed and notified them of
discrepancies, when, they may very well have found out:The author, for
whatever reason, has chosen not to participate.

Shocking, I realize, but it does and has happened. Then the fan could
take that opportunity to reiterate how much they enjoy the work of the
writer and the same function of the Spookys - reminding writers how much
we love reading fanfic - will have been fulfilled.

As for 'handicapping' the Spookys, there's been fights about what has
been, in past years, construed as campaigning for awards, either by the
authors or by their fans and friends. Why don't we speak with our votes
and private emails of support, eh? I'm always happy to see enthusiasm
over the 'what awards?' attitude but the writers are regular folks and
could be hurt by what they do and do not see in a thread like this. :(

Bunny and Bugs (hey, that kinda flows together!), thanks for clarifying
the the eligible story list stuff!

As for the other point, I hear ya. Many fanfic authors are so talented
that I do often forget that they are regular folks who frequent these
boards, and not distant celebrities. Come to think of it, the whole
thing IS pretty insensitive.... My bad!

I'll now go get on that mountain of feedbacks that I haven't written
yet. :)

I would really rather this didn't happen. As for the missing
fics, we had quite a few authors elect not to participate in
the awards, so their fics were removed at their request.

I wasn't around three years ago, so I wouldn't have recognized
it as being an old story. I believe I posted 40 million times for
people to check their stuff <g>.
