Yo Danica - Danica McKellar (Winnie)
Yo Josh - Josh Saviano (Paul)
Thursday, October 9, 1997

We're talking with Josh Saviano and Danica McKellar, two of the stars of the TV
classic THE WONDER YEARS, which will debut on Nick at Nite begining October 13.

NickOnLine: Welcome Josh & Danica. . .

Yo Danica: Hi everybody... glad to be here
Yo Josh: Hi! Good to be here, also!

NickOnLine: Our first question is for Josh. . .
Question: Ok, so Josh, there is this huge rumor going around that you are
Marilyn Manson. I know this isn't true, but how do you think this rumor got
started and are you aware of it?

Yo Josh: Yes, I am very much aware of it. I receive close to 20 emails a week
asking me if this is true... obviously, it's not, but I enjoy the creativity of
some people.

NickOnLine: Danica, here is a question for you. . .
Question: Danica, is it true there were scenes cut from the final episode,
shot in the barn?

Yo Danica: I don't think so. Did you hear something about this? I never did.

NickOnLine: A question for both of you. . .
Question: do you guys keep in touch with Fred Savage?

Yo Danica: Absolutely.. I was with him on his 21st birthday this summer. And I
surprised him on the talk show Vibe Tuesday night. It was a lot of fun!

Yo Josh: Not really. We have mutual friends that pass along "hello's" but
being on opposite sides on the country makes it tough.

NickOnLine: A great question for Danica. . .
Question: Hi Danica. The relationship between Winnie and Kevin was one of the
most moving I have ever seen on television. What did you find most touching
about the relationship?

Yo Danica: Well... the romance was always fun, but the part about their
relationship that I loved the most was the fact that no matter what they were
always there for each other during the hard times.

Question: A Q for each of U: What is it like being able to watch yourself
grow up on screen?

Yo Danica: At first it was really strange and although I'm much more used to
it now The Wonder Years will be somewhat like a large collection of home
videos. It was a great way to grow up.

Yo Josh: It's definitely bizarre. Even now when I see a re-run....

Yo Danica: The set had a really nice family environment and I wouldn't change
those years for the world.

Yo Josh: I can't beleive people are watching me. I guess one of the benefits
that my kids can watch their dad grow up.

Question: Yo Danica - Yo Josh - Do y'all ever get recognized on the street?

Yo Danica: All the time. Most of the time people are very nice. So it's a very
enjoyable experience for the most part.

Yo Josh: Yes. I think that's one of the greatest parts of being an actor. You
get to find out that what you do really affects some people. And that without
the fans we wouldn't have a job.

Yo Danica: Here, here.

Question: Did the show make each of you a bigger fan of '60s and '70s culture?

Yo Danica: Well I was only 12 years old when the show started so I didn't have
a very strong opinion one way or the other- but I can say that I have a bit of
an affection for those eras now, and their clothing as a direct result of being
on the show.

Yo Josh: Absolutely. . . The music of the time was one of the most important
characters of the show. To this day, I still love the music of that time...
also, because of the show, I got to grow up in two different eras. I got to
witness the first man on the moon, Woodstock, the Nixon era, as well as the
fall of the Berlin Wall.

Question: Josh & Danica, Do you think teen life is better in the 70's or the
90's????

Yo Danica: Let me start off by saying that better is a pretty general term. I
know that things must be different in a lot of aspects because of the advances
in technology, and the increase of crime to name a few things. So it's hard to
judge, but I have always believed that the same universal human issues show
themselves in every era and this is why the Wonder Years has an audience
ranging from those who remember their childhood in the to those who are
experiencing their childhood in the 90s...

Yo Josh: Well like I said, the eras are very different but one of the beauties
of the show, as Danica mentioned is that it captured growing up in an era is
basically the same. The only difference is the surroundings around you. Having
"lived" in both, I enjoy living in the 90s. But, it would've been very exciting
to live in the 60s.

Question: Josh, are you still in show business? If so, doing what?
Yo Josh: Not at the moment. I decided to take a couple years off to pursue my
academic career at Yale. After this year when I graduate, I hope to go to law
school, but acting is still very much a part of my life. Sometime down the line
if an opportunity arises to get back into the business I probably won't
hesitate to act on it.

Yo Danica: Very punny :-)

Question: Danica, What's in your future as an actress?

Yo Danica: Um... I'm not going to be very picky in terms of the genre. I may
try theater but what really matters to me is to stay involved with projectsthat
I believe in... I plan to return to acting after I graduate this year.

Question: Danica, are you an active member in environmental groups?

Yo Danica: I haven't been as active as I was before I started college but
that's one of the things that I look forward to becoming more involved in after
I graduate from college.

NickOnLine: A question for both of you. . .
Question: Why do you think the Wonder Years is so popular?

Yo Danica: I believe the Wonder Years has been well for the reason I mentioned
earlier--- it hit on a lot of universal issues that everyone experiences during
childhood.

Yo Josh: I agree with Danica. I got people of all ages come up to me and tell
me how real they think the show is. We had a talented writing staff who all
lived during that era in one age group or another. So what you saw on TV was
almost like the memoirs of the writing staff.

Question: Danica or Josh, In the ending credits of TWY, in the first 4
episodes, there's a credit for "Most Amazing Human" which was given to Daniel
Stern. Was this an inside joke?

Yo Danica: (laugh)...I didn't even know about that... but I think it's
hysterical....

Yo Josh: <chuckle> I didn't know anything about this either!

Yo Danica: we all loved Danny....so it doesn't surprise me...

Question: Why did the show end, and is there going to be a reunion?

Yo Danica: Well the series ran for 6 years and although I loved being on the
show, it did have to end some time. In terms of a reunion, I haven't heard
anything but you never know.

Yo Josh: I agree with Danica -- all good things must come to an end. Since
television is based on viewers it would be up to the fans to decide whether
there would be a reunion or not.

Question: Danica, I read that you and your sister were both up for Winnie. How
often does that happen as you audition?

Yo Danica: Well we are approximately the same age and when we were younger we
did audition for many of the same but this is the only role where it came down
to just the two of us... When the producers decided to hire me for the part,
they promised Crystal a role on the show- and they fulfilled their promise.
Crystal portrayed the role of Becky Slater for three seasons. It was wonderful
working together!

Question: Did you get any advice from your parents about that time period?

Yo Danica: Not really. Um... the scenes that my character was in mainly
focused on those same issues of childhood, that I keep bringing up, that were
very much prevalent in my own life so I could draw on my own experiences.

Yo Josh: Since Paul represented the style and the trend of the era. I was very
much aware of the fashion and other symbols of the era. If I had any questions
that the writers or producers....

Yo Danica: (Oh come on Josh...didn't you love your outfits?)

Yo Josh: or directors couldn't help me with.... I would ask my parents-
although sometimes this didn't help either because there was so much going on
all over the country and my are only two people. But I do think it was cool
that my mom almost went to Woodstock, but she thought it wouldn't be any
fun....

Yo Danica: (Did your parents help you with the trauma of wearing big flowered
shirts.... and striped bell bottoms? :-)

Yo Josh: And my father recently told me that his mother threw away all of his
baseball cards...

Yo Josh: In regards to the trauma, it's only traumatic in today's age. My
parents assure me that everybody wore those ugly clothes!

Yo Danica: Good answer

Question: Do you have any advice for a young actor trying to establish a
steady and long career in Hollywood?

Yo Danica: Well... the business is a tough one to break into, but as Dan
Lauria always says, "Don't try to break into the business, create your own
business" For example... putting together theater groups, raising money to
produce a small film, etc.... but most of all.... do it because you love the
acting, and you're bound to have fun. Good Luck!

Yo Josh: The most important part of acting is to keep it fun. Look at it more
as a hobby than a career, and never forget to enjoy every minute as it's
happening.

NickOnLine: Now for our last question. . .
Question: In what ways are you like or unlike your characters???

Yo Danica: When I started playing the role of Winnie, I think I made her very
much like me and as I've grown older, I've grown a bit away from who Winnie
is... but I believe we both have a lot of integrity and high morals.

Yo Josh: I tried to portray Paul as a part of every human being.... We all
have a little Paul inside of us...

Yo Danica: (chuckle)

Yo Josh: He's loyal, bright, funny, and eager to have a good time... I think
that everybody should have a friend like Paul...There are a lot of parts of me
that are very much like Paul- but there are also other parts of me who are not
like him. I think everybody is that way.

NickOnLine: We are out of time, thanks for joining us. Thanks Josh. Thanks
Danica. . .

Yo Josh: Goodbye and thank you very much for enjoying the show. It makes me
feel very special to know that I can make you guys happy.

Yo Danica: Thank you and it was my pleasure reminiscing with all of you.
Thanks for watching!
