Recently the 1968 movie, The Producers, was on AMC and in a bar scene
with Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel I spotted a much younger Carlton
Blanchard. The movie was on due to the success of the current Broadway
show of the same name.

No mistaking the Blanchard voice. The hair was dark, not white but the
nasal, sort of whiney voice was there and very recognizable - actor
William Hickey.

No, he didn't say anything about Las Cruces and didn't shout "Empty!"
over and over to the bartender but it was Carlton through and through.

Heeheeh. great spotting there! Yes William Hickey was definitely a veteran
actor. He did a lot of Shakespearean roles in his early days. I first saw
him in a Tales From the Darkside episode. He played a very eerie carnival
sideshow host who had a mummy, a vampire and a reanimated corpse on display.
Definitely one of his more sinister roles. It was a little performance for
which he won rave reviews.

He also played Uncle Lewis in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. I
love that movie! I think it's a fun movie to watch any time of year.
Heck, I watched it tonight.

My husband thinks that part where the cat gets fried is hysterical. He hates
cats. Did you like Vegas Vacation? It was kinda silly but the part where Wayne
Newton is singing to the mom (I forget her name) and the kids says "Wayne
Newton is hitting on mom!", I crack up!

I love the part when the cat gets fried too. I don't like cats either.
I didn't really like Vegas Vacation though. I didn't find it very
funny. The Wayne Newton part was good though. The mom's name is Ellen.

He was also the voice of the bad guy on "Nightmare Before Christmas"! (A
ducklike character!)

Oh yes, Dr. Finklestein (in a motorized wheelchair like Dr. Stephen
Hawking)! IIRC, he was the dieing father in "Mouse Hunt" as well.

I've seen that movie a half dozen times and never made the connection.
Thanks.
