Question: Last Tuesday I went on the Warner Bros. Studio tour and the
tour guide said that they have the script for the Veronica Mars movie
and theyre shooting it this summer! He also said that the Gilmore
Girls movie was definitely happening and they were both on a list they
send around of movies that will be in production over the summer.
Julie
Ausiello: Before I launch an investigation, let me ask you: Did the
tour guide look anything like this? [links to: a picture of an
elifish Michael Ausiello at
http://www.starpulse.com/news/media/ausiellomug.jpg ]
----------------
Me: Now, I took the tour twice in 2004, which is where I got scoopage
regarding Gg twice -- not to mention witnessed a spoiler from ER
because they undoubtedly underestimated my ability to detect the
implication of plot-point swatches of paint on a nursery wall just by
looking at it (so, yes, I knew that Carter and Kem were going to
miscarry a couple of months ahead of time). So I do take what the
Tour Guides say as generally being accurate. However, I'm hearing
this not from the Tour Guide him/herself, I'm hearing (reading) about
it in Ausiello's column -- not from Ausiello, but from the questioner.
So, I'll day this: I think that any columnist printing the question
at all put it at the very least in the "cautiously optimistic" column
to being with. But nothing more than that because, well, few of the
national columnists have the sort of access that Ausiello does and
even Kristin at E! does. But since this question being picked by
Ausiello (even though he doesn't answer it) and his credibility is
virtually impeccable, I think it's safe to say that rather than
cautiously optimistic, I am "greatly en-happy-ed" so far and hoping to
be ecstatic in the near future..
Because:
1) Whenever Ausiello tries to jokingly start this rumor himself, he
admits *somewhere* in the column that he's doing it just to start
something. No disclaimer here. No real attempt to be verbally coy,
either. And therefore . . .
2) The questioner is telling the truth as she understands it.
Something *may* have gotten garbled a wee bit in translation, such as
perhaps, because the person is a Tour Guide, what they saw was some
sort of tentative reservation list, a "keep these stages, interiors,
exteriors, open for the time being because we *may* be making these
movies." Because, clearly, these movies haven't been greenlit yet or
Ausiello would have already posted the news with SEPARATE ALL-CAPS
HEADLINES for each movie.
So, in short, unless we hear something to the contrary from either Amy
(on Gg) or Rob Thomas (on VM), the situation is that the discussions
are likely as medium-to-late in the development process as you can get
before greenlight. Like, say, a metaphorical 15 minutes 'til
Greenlight. And the list is a preliminary reservation list, as in
"These locations are technically still open for booking for summer
filming, but it's looking more and more likely that we're doing these
movies on them, so don't tell productions that might want to use 'em
that they're open or if you do, tell them that unofficially, sure,
we'll let you know, but really, these not-yet-greenlit movies have
first dibs."

Come on, a ""Veronica Mars" movie and a "Gilmore Girls" movie both
starting filming this Summer? Sounds like somebodys runaway wishful
thinking.

Even if they just do TV movies for the CW, I think it's worth it.
WALLACE NUDE SCENE!!!1!! ;P
Even a release straight to DVD would be fine by me (but I'd rather
see a BIG SCREEN {{ 3D ? }} movie.
WALLACE NUDE SCENE!!!1!! ;P
How about KBell, AHannigan, CCarpenter nude scenes?
Oh dear, here we go again. Druken Silly Season wishful thinking is not
reality. Ausiello is a useless, unreliable dipstick who wouldn't know what's
going on even is they were sitting in on the meetings. :-\
No: WALLACE NUDE SCENE!!!!1!! :D
It depends. Warner has been doing direct-to-DVD through their Warner
Premiere label, mostly with the DC animated films, but there've been a
few live-actions: the Dukes of Hazzard prequel, the Get Smart/Bruce &
Lloyd thing, both tie-ins to existing properties -- albeit
tie-in-movies to movies made from TV series. But there was also
Babylon 5: The Lost Tales, a follow up to a TV series.[1] The point
is that Warner tends to go pre-chewed with its direct-to-DVD and thus,
I think it's plausible that these *could* be in the later discussions
toward a greenlight. For showings on the CW followed by DVD releases
the next week.
Furthermore, Universal has done two direct-to-DVD Galactica movies,
too. And yes, they're SF/F, but so what? These releases are to rabid
fanbases. One of which overlaps with Veronica Mars for some reason
and moreover, the overall fanbases for Gg and VM and even, a bit more
loosely, Twilight, suggest that expanding the d2d experimentation to
the young female fanbase, which can be even more rabid than genre
fanbases -- partly because they're underserved -- isn't unreasonble.
But like I said in the post -- too bad you clipped my response -- I'm
taking this questioner a bit more seriously becuase Ausiello printed
it than I would have if this question had appeared on virtually any
other site or paper. It's quite telling that Ausiello is being
evasive about this -- "I'll have to do research on this" -- when,
frankly, he's got direct lines to so many *important* people involved
with both shows. He'd have either answered or debunked this question
because 1) he'd be able to get same-day access to these peeps and 2)
he can't joke about it again. He's already joked about it at least a
couple of times before, so his readers are already fed up with being
strung along. So he can't go to that well. Thus, with the
possibility of joking dismissed, his lack of saying *anything* either
way indicates to me that there's news and he knows what it is, but he
can't say anything about it yet.

[1] Warner seemed to want more, but JMS passed because he says he
doesn't like the format, but I think it's because he finally realized
that he's done with B5, but doesn't want to admit it to the fans.)

We have a copy of the new Veronica Mars movie script:
Veronica is doing something different now: she is going
to be joining dad at his new job: commanding a "SWAT"
team
In this episode Veronica is trying to talk down an
irate fan who is holding 40+ employees hostage with
the demand that a "Gilmore Girls" movie be made.
Reports are that the man holding the hostages is
in his 20s, lives in Missourri, and goes by the name
Rob.
Would any of the stars (Lauren, Alexis, Kristen, et al) want to do a
straight to DVD movie? The audience would be larger for a big screen, or
small screen, and therefore the monetary return would be larger (royalties).

Except Twilight's marketing for Tweens dweaming over a cute pimple.
Ewww ... if you must have one (and 99.9% of the time you don't), then I
think Gromit would be much better for a nude scene. ;-)
1) There's no effing chance that Gg would ever go to big screen, same
with VM and virtually all other non-SF/F shows *because they aren't
SF/F.* SatC is the exception that proves the rule -- and that's
because it's a phenomenon that dwarfs even most hit shows in gneeral
regardless of genre. So any and all discussion in that direction is
patently ridiculous. Less substance than the straw in a straw man
argument to be continuing to take any discussion of Gg or VM on the
big screen seriously.
2) Regarding direct-to-DVD: I doubt that Warner would do a Gg or VM
movie *only* direct-to-DVD, so in this sense, I'm really talking about
tv-movie with fast DVD release. There's no real catchy way to put it
-- but really, either way, the residuals generally aren't all that
great for a TV-movie to begin with and no thanks to the recent round
of union talks, actors basically still get no residuals for DVDs
unless they practically run the entire cult of $c!3n+o70gee.
In other words, for both Gg and VM, they've all always said that
they're on board for a movie (inherently specifically a TV-Movie) as
long as the script is good. So that question has continually been
answered and reanswered since the two series ended (err, "went on
indefinite hiatuses.")

Bell: Yes, Hannigan: Has her own series, so it's a moot point,
Carpenter: Hell to the No! Silicone is wrong.
And you forgot one: T.Majorino: Yah!

Dude, that could be half the state.
And FTR, you got the age-range wrong, but thanks for playin'!
-- Rob
Dude, I think that even when *including* Twilight in the equation that
that target audience is immensely underserved.

Half the state is NOT named "Rob".

On another subject, in the same "Ask Ausiello" column that mentions
the possible VM and GG movies, Ausiello also recommends one of the
CW's new series.
Question: Ive seen a couple of articles and commercials that call
Life Unexpected the next Gilmore Girls. Have you seen it? Is it
worth such lofty comparison? Janice
Ausiello: Its not on the same level as Gilmore, but its an
enjoyable little show featuring some great performances. Brittany
Robertson, who plays the lead ingenue (a.k.a. the Rory of the story),
is pretty extraordinary. Its definitely worth checking out.

Honestly, I think that the CW is unfairly marketing the show
specificially *as* 'the next Gilmore Girls.' They should be saying,
"If you loved Gilmore Girls, you'll love this." Because honestly,
saying that a brand new show that hasn't even aired yet is "the next
Gimore Girls" is patently unfair because *Gilmore Girls* wasn't even
Gilmore Girls when it started. Its first four episodes sucked badly!
(Okay, The Deer Hunters has its moments, including the title moment.)
It's just the wrong way to build expectations -- especially when the
show's title says that it's about things that you don't expect. So if
it's going to be like Gilmore Girls, but in ways that we don't expect,
that means that they're really, really, really, at the very least,
have season 3-4-5-level-witty dialogue right out of the starting gate.
And somewhere in the first ten episodes Shiri Appleby should say
something about the relative size of her breasts versus those of her
daughter's in a way that gets even more motivated to make sure that
Appleby doesn't ever dare get implants.
I may have thought this through a little bit too much.

What are you talking about? There's simply not enough beauty in the
world. We need more naked human beings. Or at least topless. Like
on Italian TV.
Is there a reason why you want to see Kristen Bell in 3D? Perhaps
hoping for a scene like this?
