As a long-time fan of TP, I've watched the series through dozens of
times. Each time, like most TP fans will attest, a new question comes to
mind our a new detail is noticed. One thing still makes no sense to me.
Hopefully, someone out there knows something I don't and can ease my
mind.

SYLVIA HORNE! She appears in the pilot; she's in the first scene of the
second episode; we hear her voice in the third.... and then! she's not
seen again until the last episode!!

She's included in the cast list insert of the soundtrack CD, and at some
point EVERYBODY in that insert has some type of storyline. Why did Lynch
bring Sylvia back for the last episode?? Where was she when her daughter
was rescued from One-Eyed Jack's? Why was she never seen at the hotel
again?

Another thing...she was in the director's cut of Fire Walk with Me!
during a birthday party for her son, Johnny. Why put her in the movie?

I hope someone knows the pupose of Sylvia Horne. Personally, I think she
should have stayed in the series. I could see her and Catherine get in
some cat-fights.

One of the themes of the last episode was that things were coming
full circle.

According to "The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer," Sylvia travels
a lot. Perhaps to get away from her husband, or perhaps to take
Johnnie to see specialists. Or both.

The show's writers apparently felt that the Ben character would
be easier to develop without having a wife around. (They didn't
just forget about her though; Ben is wearing a wedding ring in
every episode.) But I agree with you that Sylvia could have been
an interesting character.

Apparently the writers thought they had too many characters as it was
and decided to drop Sylvia. When Lynch , who was not around that much,
came back to do the final episode he wondered where Sylvia was. Some
critcize Lynch for bringing back characters (Sylvia, Ronnete, Heidie)
for the last episode. I liked it. First because it made the show more
realistic. Sylvia shouldn't have just dissapeared for no reason. Also
the last episode showed that all the good that Coop and the Bookhouse
Boys did thoughout the show was basically for naught. Lynch loves the
idea of a circle and it seems that the characters were still stuck in
one.

As for Sylvia, I always guessed that she took Johnny somewhere to get
him treatment. Afterall he was missing from most episodes as well.

Where is this supposed "directors cut" and how have you seen it?

I have never SEEN the director's cut, but I have read the script. It's
available all over the web. It's been a long-time wish of every TP fan
that someday the entire 4-hr FWWM will be released. But still it is only
a dream...
