The only mention of Diane in this first May episode of Twin Peaks
(probably not the same diane anyway) was when Hawk said his old
girlfriend had been "Diane Shapiro, PhD. Brandeis."
On the (title?) Maxwell Chronicles Wednesday night, a girl
mentioned she was "rocketing straight to Brandeis" on her
new SAT scores, by the way.
Anyway, I called alumni relations and there has never been
a Diane Shapiro (any spelling) who got a PhD. from Brandeis, not
in their database anyway.
So, you think this may be Cooper's Diane, or not? Maybe the reason
he seemed so upset when talking about his relationship was that he
heard Hawk say this...naah.

Imagine that. Brandeis doesn't give Ph.D.s to fictional characters? :)

I wondered the same thing when Hawk first mentioned her name, but I
didn't see any spark of recognition from Cooper, so I figured it
was yet another cosmic coincidence. Another twin, in name this time.

Is it just me, or does this seem just a bit ridiculous to anyone else out
there? Do we really expect Lynch or Frost to *look up* all the Brandeis
alumni so that they can a have a true reference for the show (great as it
is)? Besides, were this Diane person a real Alumni, wouldn't the old
disclaimer about "everyone in this show is fictional and similarities to
those alive or dead are coincidental" be broken, etc?

It just seems ludicrous to bother checking Brandeis's alumni records for
a charcter who is mentioned (in passing, no less) in a network TV show!

Otherwise, long live Twin Peaks! Cooper forever!

I would expect that the producers and/or the network Standards &
Practices people would in fact call up Brandeis themselves and make sure
there WASN'T any such person.

YES! I was going to reply to this post exactly as you did. There is
such a thing a fiction, isn't there?

Except that Dana Goldblatt *called* and asked, and they said no Diane
Shapiro got a Ph.D. there. I don't care if some sophomore in
communications science has that name, and neither would ABC. There are
only so many Ph.Ds granted per year. Having Jewish students doesn't
mean a school's doctorate rolls must exhaust all permutations of likely
names, does it.

Brandeis is a largely Jewish school. You can *bet* that there have been

at least a couple "Diane Shapiro"s there in the last decade or so.
