I can't imagine that Lynch would include it as a scientific symbol,
but rather an aural symbol only. If you focus on it as a sound only,
then it probably was symbolic of the story line moving forward quickly.
It really represents TP well. The story was quiet at the beginning, but
became very loud and swift as the body was discovered to be Laura's.
then slowed down and became quiet as Laura's memory became hum and a
murmur.
Or maybe that's not it at all. Maybe it has something to do with the
lonely foghorn.

specific examples of the Doppler Shift occurring in a scene and I
thought I'd bring this subject up. Before I list them here is a
definition of the Doppler Shift for those not taking Astronomy at this
point in time. :)
The Doppler Shift or Effect -- the apparent change of frequency of
sound waves or light waves, varying with the relative velocity of the
source and the observer: if the source and observer are drawing close
together, the observed frequency is higher than the emitted frequency.

In other words, the shift in sound compared with a train whistle that
is traveling towards you and when it has passed by.
Back to the main subject. There are at least three examples of the
Doppler Shift in TP. The first, in the first episode, is when Bobby
and Shelly are drinking in the car after leaving the Double R and after
Bobby tells Norma "I'll see you in my dreams.", and a police car
playing its siren speeds by. It seems to be important because Bobby
and Shelley watch it go by and we very clearly hear the Doppler Shift
in this scene from the police car siren. The second instance that
comes to mind is in FWWM with the whooping sound we here at the #6
telephone post in the trailer park and, the third, the whooping the
LMFAP does with his hand in the Red Room/Black Lodge with Cooper. They
both make the same shift in sound as the Doppler Shift heard from the
police car siren. That's three examples. Pay close attention, "There
may be no such thing as coincidence," as Cooper (and Jung) said.
This is a shot in the dark, but are there any science people out
there that might have an idea as to the significance of the including
of the Doppler Shift in these scenes? Wild guesses? ;) Significance?

completely unmotivated. It would have been pretty odd the police car sounded as
if it was stationary as it sped by. I think the attention they paid to it had
more to do with the unusualness of crime in Twin Peaks and to set up the beat
where Bobby takes a drink from the flask.

I really don't have any thoughts on the subject, but I have to tell you, one
reason that I love reading this newsgroup (a lot more than posting in it)
are all these far-fetched ideas. I'm not saying they're stupid in any way, I
just love the way they make something in TP (or anywhere else) seem so
important even though it might just not be. It's probably the same thing
that makes me love all these really complicated (and definitely far-fetched)
conspiracy theories.
So, keep on doing it. One day I might just have one of these ideas myself
and then I'll post it.

I ought to add to this the strange modulation to the recording on the back
of Leo's porch in the first episode when Shelley puts his washing in the
machine, it is quite unique within the series, and always grabs my
attention. Thank you for reminding me !
It is possible that these recordings are actual location, not separate
dubbing in the studio, and therefore the effects are just due to the way the
scenes were shot. Sorry to deflate the rising tension :)

How can one distinguish between a modulation in tone (Doppler Shift
of sound in air (police siren), or the batting of the LMFAP's hand in front
of his vocal-woodwind), and a modulation in your own aural perception ?
Answer: It's very, very hard.
When you taste MSG, your perception of other flavors is modulated.
When Cooper dreamed, we heard the ringing of a finger against the top
of a crystal glass. The pitch can easily be made to rise and fall, by altering
the speed of the finger around the rim.
I take all these allusions to be an aural motif for Leland, Cooper, Gordon,
and Chet - what they experience, but can not understand, is that their
mechanical processes of hearing have been affected by an oscillating,
driving force. Leland also knew it as the oil rising in the back of his
neck, a chemistry forced into his brain by a tissue paralyzed by such a
magnetic field; under the dampening effect of increasing magnetic flux
on the ion channels of human tissue, Leland was unable to keep BOB in
check when the shadow of the bird flew high in the Red Room.

Okay, I've got one for you... I was in the war-zone today (Downtown
Seattle) looking for an office and I was in one of those gadget stores
for a few minutes looking around. Then I saw it. Someone had turned
on one of those lie-detectors for telephones and it was flashing that
someone was lying. I looked around and no one near it was talking.
Then I realized it was picking up the voice of a salesman's pitch
playing on video across the room. It's a conspiracy I tell you! ;)

diner where Chet and Sam ate. The fact that Bob said E-lec-tri-city in the
meeting at the Black Lodge made me think that this is how they were getting
