I just saw a copy of the revised final draft of the script for the
TWIN PEAKS pilot, which interestingly wasn't called TWIN PEAKS at
all, but rather, NORTHWEST PASSAGE. It was written (of course) by
Mark Frost and David Lynch and dated December 7, 1988.

I'm sure that readers of this newsgroup are probably already aware
of the differences between this version of the script and what
ended up on our TV screens as the final version, but I thought I
would list a few of them just for kicks:

First of all, Josie Packard as we know her, had an entirely
different name and presumably race. In the script she is listed
as Giovanna Pasqualini Packard. Somehow I don't think that they
originally planned on her being Asian.

Next, rather than Pete finding Laura's body on the stone beach, her
body is instead lying face down on a cabled log-raft and there is
no mention of her being wrapped in plastic...they don't say whether
she is clothed or nude, but definitely no mention of plastic. In
fact, as far as Pete's conversation with Sheriff Truman goes, we
only hear it from Truman's side...so not only was she not wrapped
in plastic so Pete couldn't utter the now immortal line, "She's
dead....wrapped in plastic.", but even if he HAD said that, WE the
viewers wouldn't have heard it.

Another thing, Sheriff Truman isn't Sheriff Truman. He's Sheriff
Dan Steadman instead.

Lucy and Andy are pretty much the same, and while some scenes call
for another deputy, there is no mention of Hawk anywhere.

Also, when Truman (er, Steadman) and co. are at the Palmer house
searching Laura's room and talking to Sarah Palmer there is the
presence of two people whom I don't remember from the final
version. One is Janice Hogan a neighbor, and the other enters
while Sarah is talking - Father Clarence Hutchinson, an
Episcopalian minister. He says some comforting words to Sarah.
Anyone know if this is the same guy who performed Laura's funeral
a few days later?

Also, Ronnette Pulaski is not Ronnette but rather Sharon. She
isn't on the railroad bridge either, but found by a truck driver
walking in the middle of the road.

The Roadhouse is still a roadhouse, but in the script it has a
specific name: Hemingway's.

Although Leo is still Leo Johnson, and Shelly is still his wife,
she is listed as Shelly Simpson.

Benjamin Horne's home is called "The Grange."

There is an added scene of Bobby and Mike buying the beer at a
convenience store (!) that we see them drinking when they come to
pick up Donna.

This is kind of interesting; the note that James leaves with Ed for
Donna tells her to meet him at a Pool Hall rather than the
Roadhouse. She does take her bicycle and goes to the Pool Hall
where a sign outside reads, "21 Billiards: Rack 'Em Up." There she
meets a guy named Shorty who tells her that Joey will meet her at
the Roadhouse. She then takes her bike and rides there.

Later, when James is being brought into the jail when Mike and
Bobby are already there, they do NOT bark at him like wild dogs.
Lynch must have improvised that classic moment on the set.

Finally, in the final scene, when we see the necklace being taken,
we do NOT see any scene of Sarah Palmer resting or screaming. In
the script we as viewers simply saw this action...it was not part
of anyone's vision.

Those were the most interesting differences I could find. I'm sure
that other people have already posted this information, but I
figured since I had the information, I might as well post it.
Sorry if I bored you.

Take care all.

I heard that the part was originally intended for Isabella Rosellini (Blue
Velvet)!

He did not. It is my understanding that he envisioned this role for
his then love Issabella Rosalinni. When Joan Chen auditioned for the part
she tells of having to convince Lynch to give her the part and change
everything around her.
BTW, Joan CHen was (and I believe still is) the BIGEST BOXOFFICE DRAW
IN CHINA. Interesting. Pity she chose to do that dog with Stven Segal.

I heard this was a convenient way to have a full-length shot of a nude
corpse that can air on broadcast TV. IMO it was a great ad hoc alteration -
the head-to-toe view really works well.

I assume Hawk is the "realization" of the script's Tommy Hill, who was
an African-American deputy with a few of the same lines. In fact, in the
Europilot, Lucy refers to "Deputy Tommy 'The Hawk' Hill" as the sketch
artist ("the pictures even look like the people he's drawing!").

Interesting changes, indeed.

Yup, it was written for Rosellini and she turned it down.
Howver, according to the interview in 'TP Behind the Scenes' Chen said
Lynch was very open to change the character, but maybe Altman didn't know
the whole story or maybe Chen was being nice.

BTW,the doug firs were ponderosa pines (like the LLs log) in the draft.
They are what you would expect to find if TP were located in the
Northeastern part of the state as claimed. It made more sense to make the
pseudotsuga menziies given the location chosen for actually filming.

Also, Coop likes to whistle Rhapsody in Blue.

Also, I like to think of it as a allusion to Psycho where Janet Leigh is
wrapped in a plastic shower curtain and put in the trunk of a car that is
pushed into a pond.

Which reminds me --

Back in the days when TP was at its height of popularity in
Sweden, a local newspaper ran an interview with Swedish-born
actress Mary Stavin. She claimed that Lynch had seriously
considered *her* for the part that became Josie Packard, and had
been willing to change the character into a Scandinavian. She
said she couldn't do the part because she had other projects...
She did, however, pop up in an episode or two as the Icelandic
girl who Jerry Horne falls in love with (which is why they ran
the interview).
