A 14-year-old junior Olympian has died from a brain-eating
amoeba he contracted while swimming in a Texas lake.
Michael Riley Jr., an honor student who was about to start high
school in Houston, succumbed to the deadly brain infection, his
family said in a Saturday statement.
“The tests tonight produced undesirable results which were
coupled with the inability to function without support and
proper blood flow to the brain,” the statement read, according
to KTRK. “Michael fought a courageous fight over the past week.”
The three-time junior Olympian developed a headache and ran a
fever after swimming with some friends on Aug. 13.
In the water, a naegleria fowleri amoeba swam up his nose
started attacking cells in his brain, vcausing it to swell,
doctors said.
The condition is rare — only about 120 cases have been recorded
in the U.S. over the past several decades — but nearly always
fatal. Three people have survived the amoeba after being treated
with experimental drugs and cold mat therapy.
The uncommon amoeba is usually found in warm freshwater, hot
springs and unchlorinated pools. Symptoms — including extreme
headache, vomiting, confusion and fever — should be addressed
immediately.
