We'd actually see what Jack did with that hacksaw!!!
ah, but would they have to do more stupid plot padding with Kim to make up
for 8 hours of commercials in the "24 hours" of the show's season ?

And naked Kim. Seeing her sans clothes would be the only redeeming thing
about her character.

No, on HBO we'd see Kim IN the shower to make up for the commercial time.
Each episode is roughly 45 minutes long, so there are 15 minutes for
commercials making it 6 hours. Close guess, though :)
And we would have seen what Marie Warner did for that guy in his office
to get access to that locker.

Each episode is ~42 minutes, making it 24*18 = 432 minutes, or 7.2 hours
of commercials, so ADG was technically closer (:
I'll have to time it because there cannot be that many commercial breaks.
There were only about 5 of them per episode (one ever 10-15 minutes). There
may've been 6, we'll have to see.
But each commercial break is about 4 to 5 minutes long. I have tivo
with the a 30 second skip, and most commercial breaks require 8 or 9
presses of the skip button.

Most hour-long shows these days are on average between 40 and 42 minutes
long without commercials.
It used to be 45-47 minutes years ago but they've been sneaking more and
more commercials in over time. At this rate it won't be long before the
show's length drops to 30 minutes, with just as much commercial as there
is show.
Then people wouldn't be bitching about her sub-plots and her being given
too much time.
As far as actual content, they've already reached that point. I usually
record American Idol and watch it later, and it takes me about 15
minutes to see the whole hour if I just watch the performances and the
judges' comments.
I transferred it to DVD, cutting out the commercials, credits, and
opening re-hash, the episodes were all 40-42 minutes long.
