Song 'Hallelujah' in a West Wing episode

This was a song played in one of the episodes somewhere in series 3 or 4 I
think...It was on another TV show here in Australia during the week and it
prompted me to ask if anyone in this group knew the artist and/or origin of
the track?

FWIW, I like one of the original recordings by Leonard Cohen better (I
believe he's done it more than once, but it may just be the same
recording anthologized differently).

I believe that it's actually John Cale's version in the movie, although
Wainwright's is on the soundtrack album.
