You missed something. Jenny is Leo's (now) ex-wife. I'm not sure, but for
some reason I have the impression that Jennifer's maiden name is O'Brien and
that's why Mallory uses it. Then again, I could be pulling that out of
nowhere.

I had assumed that Mallory's name was different because she had been
married before. Jenny wasn't another child, she was Leo's wife, now
divorced.

yeah...it's either that or she took her mother's name because her dad was so
heavily in politics and she didn't want anyone making the connection if they
hadn't already. if that's the case, i would imagine that o'brien is probably
her middle name.
then again, we can assume the real reason for the different name is just to
confuse sam. <g>

My mom says that she read either in "TV Guide" or "People" that the name
O'Brien was a mistake or a typo early on, which was picked up by someone who
didn't notice the error. She says the name means nothing. Someone just
goofed.
I can't confirm this, as I haven't read either publication in awhile, but it
will be interesting to see if they eventually need to explain this for the
storyline.

Speaking of which, do you think we'll ever find out about Sam's pre-Bartlett

Wasn't her name Lisa?
-Naomi
I can not even begin to imagine why that would have been written if it
wasn't for a future storyline. It didn't do enough on its own to be a stand
alone scene.

i don't buy this at all. if that actually did show up in print, it sounds to me
like it's someone rewriting history again, much like they've all done with
aaron and richard's conversation about the wedding ring.
it makes *sense* that mal's name is different than leo's...otherwise there
would've been no story there. if she was mallory mcgarry, i doubt that even sam
wouldn't have been able to figure *that* one out.
I think it did exactly what it was supposed to do. It raised our curiosity,
and it deepened Sam's back story. Now we know he had a lucrative job and a
serious relationship before the Bartlet campaign, and we can draw our own
conclusions about what happened with Lisa, but the real point is that Sam's
life changed completely.
Also, Sorkin is a tease.

Sam wasn't thinking straight at all that morning, so I wouldn't expect
him to catch the obvious... in any event, chances are he never saw the
name of the teacher whose class he was meeting and everyone assumed he
already knew. Regarding Mallory's last name: As with most of them, we
don't know much about her back story. Perhaps she's been married.

she introduced herself to him.
See, we've found out something already!
Sorry, other threads have made me a little goofy.

no...and even if that had happened her *maiden* name would be mcgarry.
