Rome is highbrow compared to Sparticus.
I liked both but Rome it seems never got the ratings to get a third season.
Rome like Deadwood featured mainly historical characters,
I got it but haven't started watching it yet. I don't want any spoilers
but does it at least have a sense of closure to it? I'm still pissed about
Deadwood being cancelled with little to no closure at all.
Yes. I believe they never intended it to go past 2 seasons, with a
vague possibility held out for a feature film that thus far has not
panned out. Rome was canceled more due to cost of production than to
ratings being poor.
And then HBO goes and makes Game of Thrones, which, excellent as it has
been, probably cost as much or more.
HBO is still looking for the new Sopranos.
That's just ridiculous!! I'm exactly halfway through season 2 and I can't
believe there's no more after that.
Get the lead out!
One of the things they attributed to Rome not getting a third season was the
cost of production. I guess they had a mini Rome built and filmed the series
somewhere in Italy.

Yes, Rome has a definite sense of closure for it's 2 main characters.
I know what you mean about Deadwood. And they kept promising us a couple
Deadwood movies for HBO to wrap things up.
Game of Thrones has been getting really good ratings though. Hasn't it? I
think the ratings justify the production costs on Game of Thrones but I
don't know if Rome was doing quite well enough to offset it's costs.
I don't know if they'll ever have another Sopranos but they've got some
series that have quite a following. True Blood is definitely a water-cooler
show. I don't know if Boardwalk Empire was quite that big of a hit. It did
well but it wasn't the "must-watch" show that everyone talked about at work
the next day.
Wasn't there something about sets being lost in a studio fire with
rebuilding adding to the cost of another season? I'm not sure without
looking it up but seem to remember hearing something like that.
There, there, honey. Come now. You know you're very beautiful when
you're skittish?

I watched Rome a few years ago. great series. I really wanted to like Game
of Thrones but it's not gripped me at all. Mind you the few times I watched
Spartacus was the same so perhaps I should give it another go. As for The
borgias.. I shall be downloading later
LOL! Yes, but it's very high maintenance!

That's how I was the first couple or three episodes, now I am completely
gripped.
That was from the 3rd episode when Lucius asks Pullo's advice on how to talk
to his wife. Pullo says he's an expert at talking to women. "you talk to
them like you're saddling a horse that's kind of skittish... there there,
come now. And you tell them they're beautiful all the time even when
they're not." hahahaha Funny stuff.
I remember hearing that too. I don't think that's why is was canceled. I
think it was just the final nail in the coffin.

Oh damn, I should have figured that out. I LOVE those two! So I take it you
are well into watching. Where are you? I only have 2 eps left, I am so sad.
I might have to watch Gilmore Girls again to cheer up.
I'm up to episode 5 in season 1. That scene above was in episode 3 I think
and I watched that before reading your post to "get the led out" . heheh
My understanding is that the sets where it was shot are part of a
stock location someone built for Roman-era movies and TV shows that
has been featured in many of same. A small part of it was destroyed by
a fire, but after the cancelation of "Rome" had been announced, IIRC.

Well that's me decided then! We've downloaded the first series of The
Borgia's so it's a night watching that.
That's another one I had to wait a couple of eps, but that one also turned
out to be a gripper. Stick with it! It's only 9 eps.

How do you like it so far? You will be sorry when it's over. I'm on my next
to last ep.
I'm on episode 7 now. I like it quite a bit. Whoever compared it to
Deadwood is right, I think. They took real historical figures and added
some other characters to make a great drama.

That double first ep sort of bored me and I put it aside, but then I started
watching again. Don't worry, you'll get some good sex and violence!
Finished the series and I am so sad it's over. Never watched Deadwood. I
tried, couldn't stand it. Should I try again?
I loved Deadwood but the language might be off-putting to a lot of people.
It's like what Shakespeare might have written if he was writing about the
old west.
Ian McShane as Al Swearengen is terrific and Timothy Olyphant is real good
too.
"In life you have to do a lot of things you don’t fucking want to do. Many
times, that’s what the fuck life is… one vile fucking task after another."

LOL, ok I'll download a few eps and see if it grabs me.
Where are you now in Rome?
It's really awesome, in fact! Can't wait to watch the latest ep.
I'll probably watch the last two episodes of season 1 tonight. Maybe start
on season 2 if I feel like it.
Try Deadwood again. If you can get past the odd speech patterns (not the
foul language but the way they talk), it's a great series. Al Swearengen
makes it worth it alone!
That's a great way of putting it!

They're amazing! The whole cast is great though.

I always loved Al's conversations with Wu. Those were the best.
Watched the first ep. Why didn't I like it?? That makes no sense. I love
westerns.
good thinking!
I don't know. Maybe it will take you a few episodes to get into it. Give it
a while. It's worth it.
No, I like it! I've only watched 2 eps. Good thing I downloaded the whole
season. I think maybe what happened was I tried watching it right after
finishing Lonesome Dove, which had really captured me.
> good thinking!
I downloaded all of Season 1 of Deadwood and I will be downloading all the
rest. How many seasons were there?
There were 3 seasons of Deadwood but it ended way too soon. HBO basically
cancelled it (probably over the cost) and promised fans there would be two
2-hour movies for closure. That never happened so the show never got any
sense of closure.
The creator of Deadwood is David Milch who wrote a lot of the early seasons
of NYPD Blue. I know you liked that show a lot when you watched it.
I'm almost done watching Rome. I will watch the last two episodes tonight.
I've enjoyed it a lot though it's sometimes weird with Romans speaking
british slang. I can see what people meant now about season 2's time-line
being so compressed. They needed to hurry up and finish the story since the
show was cancelled. I thought one plot hole came from the time line. So
much time supposedly passed that they had to get an older actor to keep
playing Octavian yet Vorenus's kids looked pretty much the same when he
finally rescued them.
I think HBO does some great tv series but I don't understand why they take
on shows like Rome or Deadwood knowing money is going to be such a huge
issue. They have to know the production is going to be expensive given the
elaborate sets and costumes. Both shows had good to great ratings and
critical acclaim yet both got the axe.

Yeah, it seemed that way. What british slang? I don't remember. I found it
funny that the Egyptians all spoke with British accents.
I thought one

LOL yeah the switch. At first I didn't like the new guy, but I thought he
did a great job.

That's just wrong.
After Deadwood they gave him another series on HBO called "John From
Cincinnatti". It revolved around a bunch of surfers and some dopey guy that
was supposed to be like a Christ figure. Very strange stuff. It only got one
season and never really made much sense before it got cancelled. The nice
thing was that it featured some Deadwood veterans. After that one was
canceled there was talk of another HBO series but I can't remember what
about. Maybe something with cops but I can't remember for sure. That one got
shelved before anything was made and I thought I heard about them working on
another with Milch. I think HBO has Milch under a long term contract or they
just really like him.
I never watched that show John From Cincinnatti but the worst part about it
is I read that HBO gave Milch the choice of continuing with Deadwood or
doing that. If that was true, what a huge mistake that was.
I finished watching Rome and was wishing Deadwood had the closure they were
able to give to that series.

Well that's unpleasant!
Did you start on Deadwood? I am enjoying it.
I actually liked the first season better than the second. Only because in
the second season it was obvious they were having to hurry the story along
faster than they might have wanted. I could never understand any point in
the jews story for instance. It never went anywhere.
The ending was worked well though and I liked it. I was just happy to get
some closure. You can easily see the story ending at that point. That's
the big problem with Deadwood. It ran one more season than Rome but they
left the story just hanging.

We watched a bit of it last night, everyone's saying how good it is but to

Damn. Well, thanks for warning me. Yes, it was obvious in S2 of Rome that
they had to hurry the story along. But you're right, at least we got

I'm getting all excited : )
Yes. Deadwood and Veronica Mars. Slayah just noticed Kristen Bell in an
episode of Deadwood. She was the star of Veronica Mars which was a
detective mystery show. The hook is it's about a high school age girl who
works for her father who is a private detective. It's a LOT better than it
sounds especially if you liked Gilmore Girls a lot.
I thought Kristen Bell's bit on Deadwood was awesome. And the resolution to
that part of the story was chilling.
Veronica Mars was one of my favorite shows! I loved that show. I liked the
earlier seasons better than the later ones but it was all good. One of the
things missing from the later seasons was Backup. I really liked him in the
earlier ones. That was one of the few shows of that type where I liked the
main character best and not the supporting cast. For example, Buffy and
Angel... I always like the supporting cast better than the lead. Veronica
was the best.

haha. I have to say I needed to be sold on it myself when I first tried it
but it's really good. I'd actually compare it more to Buffy The Vampire
Slayer without the supernatural stuff. Veronica is one smart cookie and I
think you'll really like the dialog.

I was sorry to see Veronica cancelled when it was but I'm not sure where it
had to go. It's a lot like Buffy in that it was better during the time she
was in high school than when it moved to college. Everyone relates to high
school. Not everyone went to college or had the same experiences there.
You did, so thanks again for the warning, lol.

I'm on the case. Watched Deadwood last night.,.. Loved it!!
I loved Buffy in both high school and college. I didn't think much of season
1 but then season 2 really went well. From then on, I loved it (despite not
liking certain elements) until the last season, which wasn't that great.
I think Veronica Mars did actually have more room to grow. Sure, I didn't
like her college time as much as her high school time. I read that the
show's creator had plans to jump ahead a few years if they could get
renewed. He wanted to have her joining the FBI and go from there. I think it
could have been interesting.
> I'm on the case. Watched Deadwood last night.,.. Loved it!!

Well done us. my second chance too!!
Really? I wasn't really familiar with her when I saw that episode. I started
watching Veronica Mars sometime shortly after that I think. I just remember
how beautiful and innocent she looked, almost like a doll. And then there
was the reality of what she was. And then to top it all off, the final image
of her (don't want to spoil) was really chilling.
That was exactly my experience so maybe it makes a difference how you view
her if you saw that before watching Veronica Mars. Sometimes it's hard to
see actors as other characters once you're used to them. Bell's role in
Deadwood was about as polar opposite as you could get. I thought she was
great in it.
That's a very good point. If we knew her as Veronica Mars, we might think
she was mis-cast in the role. Kind of like watching Vic Mackey play a
goofey, dorky, suburbanite superhero.
Interesting theory, considering how I believe I liked _No Ordinary
Family_ more than many here - but my first exposure to Michael Chiklis
was as a slightly goofy, suburbanite police commissioner.
BTW FYI speaking of Kristen Bell, she's in Paris this week with Craig
Ferguson shooting episodes of his late night show.
Maybe that's it. All I kept seeing was Veronica Mars playing this opposite
role and looking so weird in that hair. But still, I just didn't like her
acting. I had a different experience when she was on Heroes, it wasn't a
negative reaction.
That was quite disturbing!
We were clearly separated at birth.
Yep, the frontline was though.
Honestly, I'll be reluctant to watching anything new with him in it unless I
read the words "gritty" in the description. It almost seems like The Shield
was a anomoly in his role choices.
