He's not a true purple, more a bluish-purple. I don't particulary like his
shade. I am more partial to the reddish purple color.

i also noticed that in the Jerry F press release, it referred to Lalaa as
'Orange'...???
i think that Jerry needs to adjust the colour on his television...

it seems to make 'sense' to me that Tinky W is Blue and that Lalaa is Yellow,
as then, each of the Teletubbies would represent a Primary Colour...with Green
being considered a Primary colour by many lay persons...

just to confuse matters...
western civilization makes two distinctions between red and blue, Violet and
Purple, Violet being the more reddish blue ( according to one dictionary, and
bluish purple according to another...!!! )
both seem terrible vague about what they mean...???
while many people still think that Orange is really Red ( how many people do
you know that REALLY have Red hair ( get out your box of crayons ) )
and between Yellow and Blue, there is Green, which is so different from either
that it's considered a Primary colour in it's own right...ALTHOUGH, i have
heard that in Japan, before they were westernized, they had only one colour
name for both Blue and Green...???
All in all it's all VERY simantic.
when someone asks, How many colours are there in a rainbow?
the correct answer is not 3 or 6 or 7, but Infinite.
and also: Brown in not represented in a rainbow...is it then to be considered a
real colour...???
neither is Black or White, which even most lay people consider the absence of,
and the totality of pure light...which actually has more to do with the way our
eyes evolved from early fishes...and the amount of Ozone in the atmosphere,
which only allows certain colours through to ground level...
???
final conclusion:
Tinky Winky is Blue, as Blue as you want him to be...
he's certianly not the same colour as that Steeeeeeeenking Reptile, Barfy The
Dinosaur.

I cannot agree. Tinky Winky is violet, not blue, not purple.
As the poet said (or was someone else iddling in usenet?):

Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
That's what they say,
But that is not true.

A quite adequate rhyme for the coming Valentines Day...

Color names are all in all a cultural or a linguistic convention,
but is we consider red (as blood), yellow (as rippen lemons) and
blue (as calm and clear sky) to be the three primary colors, I
would name the inmediate secondary ones (as obtained by mixing a
different couple of the primary ones) as orange, green and violet.
(Won't enter in much more fuzzy color labels...)

In terms of light, red, green and blue make up primary colours, as you
can get any other colour with additive lighting, i.e. you end up with
white.

For pigments, this uses the subtractive method, i.e. you end up with
black. (Printing uses CMY, or Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, which are the 3
secondary colours in lighting terms, i.e. a red beam and a blue beam
gives magenta, or Red and Green giving Yellow.)

When people talk about primary colours, they often actually mean
saturated colours as opposed to tints.

Hi Wanda,
Your post appears to me as an overintellectualization about the color scheme
of the Teletubbies... Blue, Green, Yellow, Red are often considered by many
as primary colors. I believe the number of primaries has been reduced to 3
of late... however I recall blue, green, red, indigo, yellow and violet as
once being considered primary colors... that the teletubbies are in fact
blue, green, red and yellow seems obvious to me. Do you really think someone
decided to work on non-primary colors? Or that sophistry in color scheme was
somehow more important than basic color patterns to children? Why have a
purple and leave blue blank? Why have orange and not yellow? I agree
depending on the tint of a monitor or TV the colors can appear radically
different, however the concept of primary colors, and of blue, green, red
and yellow seems pretty hard to refute. As best I can recall blue green and
red optically constitute primary colors for monitors and TV's, and for some
reason I can't fully recall yellow is substituted for green with most common
paint sets (I suspect it is related to pigmentation). Thus the colors of the
teletubbies would match either the primary colors of monitors/tv's or of
paints. And it really is simple, it isn't related to western culture, or
oriental culture:-) At least not in my humble opinion:-)

Regards

In Teletubbie simplicity there is real elegance:-) Adults seem to have a
greater need to cloud such things (mostly in their own minds);-(..

Tinky Winky looks blue to me too but if you check the BBC Teletubbies Web
site, you'll find that his official colour is purple according to Ragdoll
Productions who make the programs for the BBC.

so yesterday, while i was watching the teletubbies...i was trying very hard to
be open minded and decide what colour Tinky W was...
and it seemed to me that occasionally he seemed very Purple, and sometimes
obviously Blue...???

i find it very distressing that his official colour is Purple...!!!

it seemed to me that the reason for making the Teletubbies the primary (
pigment ) colours was to make them all as different from one another as could
be...???

in the past, it's seemed to me that Dipsy seemed awfully yellow...and also
given that Dipsy's hair line changes from time to time...it has occurred to me
that the defining parameters of the Teletubbies are NOT rigidly fixed...???

also: the problem with Tinky W hue is that he's a very dark Blue/Purple which
makes it harder to see as Blue...most Blues, such as sky Blue is a light
blue...and many blues such as Teal is greenish tinted blue...
there aren't many examples of a true dark blue to derive a valid index
from...???

i'm traumatically confused by all this...

If that is the case then quite obviously they have more than one costume for
each Tubbie. It's a costume show folks, it isn't really animated or
claymation...

Maybe Tinky's costume is coated with that stuff mood rings are made of which
changes color according to his temperature.
So, when he see's Jerry Fallwell, he turns blazing red.

Tinky Winky is the purple one. Someone said "I wonder if that makes
Barney gay." I find Dipsy far more sexual, his penis proudly displayed
on his head.
