Question about digital tuner for cable

I bought a Sony RDR-VX525 DVD VCR Dual Deck Recorder for Christmas and
learned that it has no tuner built in.

I want to install this in our spare bedroom to record stuff off cable
for later viewing and also copy our VHS tapes to DVD. What is the best
way to get a digital tuner setup for this.
I contacted our cable company but they will only rent us a Scientific
Atlanta 3200 for $5 extra a month. I'd rather buy a digital tuner of
some sort but can't get any good information from anyone at Best buy,
Circuit City or Radio Shack. I have a feeling they don't know much but
won't tell you that.

I see Scientific Atlanta 3200 cable boxes for sale on ebay but it
looks like if I got one of those I would still have to subscribe or
the cable companies equipment wouldn't recognize it.

Any suggestions?

Many cable companies won't activate converters from other sources.
Without their rental converter you're stuck with a limited quantity of
"basic service" channels that can be received with cable ready tuner.
Their argument is that the policy insures that only subscribers paying
for the "extended" service tier are able to view the added channels.
