I called to cancel Directv because we just lost 20 channels. I am
told that I have to pay 20 bucks per month until my contract runs out.
It is in the contract. I was informed by the supervisor that the
contract says they can cut channels or increase the rate even though
we are in a fixed contract.

Who reads those contracts anyway? I guess they have me by the nuts
until the contract runs out. Then goodbye Direct TV.

Only a fool bothers to read a contract which he signs.

The wise man gets his lawyer to check it for him first.

Is that not the case?

If he's that wise he has a lawyer whose minimum is a lot more than
several months of the TV contract.

Probably, because the lawyer is also working on schemes for tax avoidance
and moving money to the Cayman Islands ;)

You're out of touch. The smart insider money is in Bermuda:

Call them back. Tell them you're going to get a lawyer to create a
class-action suit. Tell them how easy that will be, since all their
customers are also out those 20 channels... and will be seeking
damages ;-)

You can try Jim Thompson's suggestion, but they may know that for most
customers a class action suit is a hollow threat. Worth a try though.

It may be more effective to tell them that you're going to the local
media with your story (call the consumer advocate at the local TV
stations, if any, write a letter to the newspaper, etc.) and it will
make them look bad and they'll have more customers like you calling and
asking for what you want. Then with more complaining, a class action
suit threat may appear more credible.

I decided to subscribe to Dish some time ago - they don't have a
contract for all their packages. I got one without. ATT Uverse TV
doesn't have a contract either last I checked. Its much better to be
without the contract if possible. But some of the up-front limited
time discount deals are tempting with the contracts.

20 channels is a lot, and could easily be considered a breach of contract on
DirecTV's part. I knew DirecTV was feuding with Viacom, but I didn't realize
it affected that many channels.

On Dish we lost 3 channels, but they brought in other channels as
replacements.

It didn't. Viacom was and is using a bit of double-counting.

And no, it doesn't mean a breach of contract.

As did D*. They lit up all the Encore channels, brought in Disney Jr
(which they didn't even have before), and opened up some other channels
to all.

They even went so far as to set up a 'Kids Mix' channel so kids could
find the alternative children oriented stuff.

And if you called in, you got some discounts and other freebies.

DirecTV and Dish both are doing a good job of mitigating the situation,
even though the loss of channels is irritating.

Me calling customer service would be a good time for Direct TV to
bring up there were extra channels. (They did say Encore but no
"other" channels) I programmed my remote a few days after I
subscribed to only show the channels I am interested in.

It would be nice to at least be able to find out what the new channels
are so I can add them.

BTW it is really time consuming to have to figure out what channels I
want on my favorites. You should have an option to "only show
subscribed" then be able to delete others "on the fly"

I just logged on to my Direct TV account page. There is nothing about
any added channels. I guess I will have to call customer support to
find out what generous extra channels they gave us to replace South
Park.

It will probably be more effective to actually do it ( go to the
media ), instead of calling DirecTV at all. They may pay more attention
when their media contact starts getting interviews on the air.

Calling some local station/paper??

It's national news. They are paying attention, btw, and calling direcTV
will do nada.

The calls to DIRECTV did nothing.

Me calling to complain got me an instant 50 buck credit and 5 off my
monthly bill for the next 12 months. I plan on returning to Charter
in 8 months when my contract runs out.

I was happy with the channel line up, but there are 3 more people and
5 more TVs here now. I am not paying per TV. As it is now, everyone
is watching the same channel. (More accurately no one is watching
much TV except for in the Den with the 50 inch)

Excellent! I meant, of course, that calling DIRECTV® in response to an
ad placed by a content provider does nothing.
