This is usually not advisable, as many of these are designed to vent the
heat upward (only) when in landscape orientation.
I doubt if that is much of an issue with the better plasmas as they
run cooler. The plasma cells don't care.
But this would be for a static image display. I prefer plasmas for TV
and DVD viewing as they offer better picture quality than LCDs, but in
this case, I would be concerned about burn-in. For static displays and
brightly or harshly light environment- such as one might get in a mall -
LCD flat panels are more suitable. LCD flat panels are also a few
pounds lighter than same size plasmas which makes them easier to move
and set up (and less prone to cracking the screen). My recommendation
would be to look for a 42" or 46" LCD with a VGA port in this application.

I remember a TV commercial a few years ago where the couple with a new
plasma tried the screen in several locations, and ended up with it on
the ceiling above their bed.... so I don't think standing it on end on
portrait position should bother it.

Well, check the Tanforan mall (South San Francisco), or Valley Fair (San Jose).
You should find LG panels hanging around there in portrait mode, running.
