TBH, I never gave it a minute of thought either way. In fact, if you asked
me how many Survivor winners have been gay or queer, I couldn't tell you. I
can list Hatch and Herzog cause they were very public about it and back then
it was still something of a big deal, but nowadays this just doesn't seem to
be much of an issue.

It's not an issue but when players themselves reveal the info it becomes worthy of discussion. Scrolling through that thread I see that Parv has now come out as gay. Like you, I'd have no idea how many winners have been gay. Definitely would have got Parv wrong. Probably would have got Todd wrong as well. But I would get Michele right! lol

Given Parvati's marriage to John Fincher (which seems to have ended, in
part, because she accused him of domestic violence), and the fact that they
have a daughter together, this might suggest she is actually bi.

You're ahead of me on Michele. I wouldn't have guessed that. I always
kind of liked Michele, probably because she grew up in NJ about 15 miles
from where I grew up (albeit a few decades after me), and she reminded me of
people I knew growing up.

A lot of girls start saying they are bi or gay when they
loose interest in guys, which happens at some point in
their lives.

I'm not saying they are not, just saying, bi or gay or
whatever, that when their blood was at its hottest, at
a constant boiling level, almost, they were VERY interested in
men :)

I think Parv's situation is probably very complicated. Not only was her marriage bad, the divorce was also apparently very nasty.

Michele is 100% straight. She's always been very supportive of the gay community. Years ago, she got the nickname Bichele which she ran with, and a lot of people believed she's bi. She confirmed she's not but a lot of people either didn't get the message or don't want to believe she's not bi. The fact that she's hooked up with what seems like every guy she's played with either on Survivor or The Challenge and never a woman, appears to have flown over some people's heads.

But: what about all the somewhat marginalized people, not
homeless drug addicts necessarily, more like people who have
spent their lives in the margin of society, living in caravans
and basements and squats and back with their old folks even,
relying often on culture and one or two strong interests and
activities to keep them sane and busy? But seldom working
a day job for long and by and large watching mainstream
society - be it by their own desire or not - pretty much from
the outside?

This type of person is much more common than most nine-to-five
people think. So how come they never get to play?

If Survivor wants to contribute to an open and tolerant
society, fine, but then they make that task too easy by just
checking the boxes to include people from ethnic, religious,
and sexual minorities.

Because not all interesting backstories are superhuman efforts
to get degrees, get jobs, get into shape, become confident
after being introvert as a kid etc. This is a very simplified,
conformist world view they present. There is room for that but
also for people who live strange and interesting lives, not
decades ago, but now, every day.

And asked for their backstory, they would tell you what
happened yesterday or last week. And you would believe them,
since no one could make up such bizarre stories anyway ...

Ah, I don't mean to preach - if it came across that way - I'm
just daydreaming out loud how my ideal Survivor would be :)

Well they sort of did that with the White Collar-Blue Collar-No Collar
theme, followed a few years later by Heroes-Healers-Hustlers where you could
say the No Collar and Hustlers groups were intended to represent the sort of
"other" category in the traditional classifications of people by their jobs.
Nowadays, though, the show seems to be eschewing efforts to categorize
people by their age or job or income or anything other than ethnic
diversity. To be honest, if I had to write down occupations of all the
players this year, I probably could list the three lawyers, Emily, the early
truck-driver boot, Sab, and not many others. If you ask me what Kendra or
Kaleb or Bruce or Kelley or most of the others do for a living, I couldn't
tell you. I'm not even sure what Dee does, since she was always listed as
entrepreneur, which could honestly be anything from professional survey
taker to high-level business investor, and I doubt she's either one of
those.

We know Kaleb's in sales because he talked about it several times in confessionals and the others referenced it. Kellie's a critical care nurse which I believe was also talked about on the show. Austin's an MBA student. Hannah mentioned on the show she's a therapist and Sean's a principal. Wasn't Sifu a chef? Or was it martial arts instructor? The other half of the cast I have no idea off the top f my head.

Over the course of the season a player's occupation usually comes up. I don't recall anyone asking Bruce what he does or him mentioning it.

I'm still puzzled by her relationship with Fincher. Did being a rocket scientist impress her?

On a slight tangent, someone on the weekend posted a pic of Parv and Kellie together at a Taylor concert this past summer. Does casting pass out phone numbers to players so they can contact each other? I thought new players had to keep quiet until CBS officially announced the cast?

I don't think Jeff would reference that if Bruce himself never called
attention to it, which I don't recall him ever doing.

Going all the way back to Season One, I think Rudy being an ex-Seal was
common knowledge among the cast and was occasionally referenced (by Rich, at
least), but back then the players were more open about their background and
professions and rarely hid that much about prior occupations.

Brian Heidik famously concealed his background as an ex-actor (including
some soft porn roles) in Season 5, but I think the first really blatant
example was Gary Hogeboom trying to conceal his background as an ex-NFL QB
on Survivor 11 (course little did he know that fellow cast mate and eventual
winner Danni was a sportscaster who instantly recognized him). After that
it became somewhat more common.

Did Bruce knowingly conceal his background as a Seal? Given the paranoia
that modern players seem to have about various professions, I can easily see
it.

Bruce didn't in the game as far as we know but he must have post S44. Someone had to have asked him about it.

I find players now are much more open about their backgrounds unless they feel it will make them look threatening which is why Julie and Katurah kept quiet about being lawyers.

I doubt doing porn would be a concern today. What people hide or keep quiet now is their political affiliations. For example, Ozzy said if Sarah had revealed she was a MAGA supporter before FTC in Game Changers that she never would have won. She was smart enough to put on the hat AFTER FTC.

Dani was no doubt cast because they knew she would know who Gary was.

With Bruce you never know. To me, he seemed to be there more to have a good time than to win the game.

Anyone watching Australian Survivor? New season started this week and the
theme is a clear take-off on the US seasons of White Collar-Blue Collar-No
Collar and Heroes-Healers-Hustlers which were discussed above. This one is
called Titans vs. Rebels, and the Titans are mostly establishment types who
made it big like owners of companies, an area manager, world-class athletes
(including a female weightlifter), a corporate lawyer, a top model, an
engineer, a scientist and even a government diplomat. The Rebels are
exactly what you would think - a firefighter, an undercover detective, a
female bar manager, but they also include a weird female psychologist who
can't stop talking, a rebellious HR manager who doesn’t seem to fit in the
corporate world, a paramedic, a teacher and others. It looks like a cool
season, and what I like is that in typical Aussie Survivor fashion, they
film it over 47 days (not the wimpy 26 days of current US Survivor) and they
have a large cast of 24 contestants.

I wish US Survivor would go back to giving the seasons names. Numbers work for BB because of the live feeds and how long the seasons are.

Does Survivor Australia do two seasons/year or is it just one? If it's two I'd like to know where are they getting the budget from to do so. If Paramount Global merges with another media conglomerate or is bought and gets taken private, I wonder if Survivor will survive (lol)?

They do one season per year but, unlike the US, they do a hefty 24 episodes.
They also air three episodes a week on consecutive nights, so a whole season
airs in about two months. This season they are filming in Samoa for the
second year in a row and fourth overall, so that may become their version of
Fiji for the US. They did film in Fiji three years in a row pre-Covid, but
when Covid hit they filmed in Queensland (Australia) for a couple of
iterations before moving to Samoa.

Four of the last five seasons aired in summer from roughly January through
March. Prior to that it aired mostly August through October.
