Something doesn't sound right - for example, they are supposed to be
finished shooting and they are not in Brazil but in Gabon! So this is
obviously not the American version of the show but perhaps he is
working on the Brazilian version or other nation's show.

I know, can't get much information. However, the credits at the end of the
USA Survivor Edition said, "In Memory of Alton Desiree." That's what
prompted me to look. But It was strange because I got several hits on it
they were all saying the same thing.

I googled it after I saw your post, and just got the info from "bitten and
bound" and one other place that was quoting it. So I decided it was bull
crap, until I saw that" in memory" thing when I was rewatching Survior
earlier. Weird.

I would say that means they are probably filming the next one already, in
Brazil.

S-17 (this season was filmed from June 23 to the end of July). One of
the contestants (Sugar) had returned to the States and was already
working on another film project. She married her director in late
August so we know that they are definitely not talking about this
season.

The winter version of Survivor (S-18) doesn't begin filming until
early November.

According to a second article I've read, the accidental drowning
occurred on or about Sept 15.

Now I know pre-production has a very long lead time - usually 2+
months of "build" before filming even begins. It is possible that he
was part of the initial crew for prepping S-18 as he only started work
after Sept 9. The timeline would give them about a 10 day frame from
after Burnett's company knew about the death for which they could have
added that "in memory of" to the closing credits in the first show of
S-17.

For the contestants, who have yet to be selected, this could provide
them with additional spoiler information they could use to their
advantage during the final selection process (S-18 in Brazil and
possibly the Amazon area similar to S-6).
