question but have heard some discussion on it, so I thought I'd chime in...
The people who I've heard that are stict literalist when it comes to the
Bible do believe that Adam and Eve's children did populate the earth
entirely by themselves. There is some verse that said after Cain killed
Abel Adam and Eve went on to have many other children, Cain probably married
one of the daughters or even another offspring of one of Adam and Eve's
children at some point, it could have been after they had produced whole
communities. At this point people were living hundreds of years and could
produce offspring much later in life than we can. God didn't oppose laws
against incest until much later in the Bible and such humans were so close
to the ideal in which they were created inbreading really wasn't a problem
since there were no genetic defects to worry about.
Similarly after the flood the earth was populated again entirely by Noah,
his wife, his three sons, and their wives.
Anyway, like I said, I don't really have a strong opinion whether all this
is true or not, but I've always found the question and different theories
interesting.

true biological problems with inbreeding.
I thought the problem had to do with a lack
of diversity in the available genes, not in
the defect level of those genes. If that is
the case, the Adam and Eve (but no one
else) storyline seems like it would cause
the ultimate problem.
It is odd that humans have a big problem
with inbreeding, but most other species
do not. Of course, there are animals, like
the cheetah, that are headed for extinction
specifically because of the problems of
inbreeding, so I guess it does effect the
animal world as well.

I don't have a very good understand of biology or anything, so someone more
knowledgable chiming in would be helpful, but my understand it that the lack
of diversity is a problem because the probability of both parents carrying a
genetic disease is increased if they are related. For instance, some
diseases only show up if both parents pass on a recessive gene. If a
brother and sister reproduce, it's much more likely they are both carriers
of the same recessive gene simply because they could have both gotten it
from the same parents than two random, unrelated people, and if they both
pass on the same recessive gene to their offspring, the offspring is much
more likely to show up with the disease. Does that make sense? That's
always how I understood it, but I'm not sure, a large part of that is what I
inferred from that "The truth is out there" TV show with Moulder, I can't
remember the name. :->

True. I'm not sure where historians stand on the people in the Bible's life
spans anyway. There is so much disagreement whether the stories are truth
or alagory anyway, lifespan is probably a minor detail.

Evolution doesn't work that fast and I'm not so sure that skin color is directly
related to environment.
It doesn't seem to have made a difference in the skin color of American Indians,
who occupied the Western Hemisphere from the Arctic to Tierra Del Fuego and
everywhere in between for the last 10,000 years (or more).
As an example, the natives of the Andes still have a smaller average lung capacity

the effects of one of the gene pairs will override the other, which is
referred to as "dominant" and "recessive" gene traits.
This is usually demonstrated with plants or fruit flies, which can be
bred quickly to examine the effects of gene combinations. Genes are
paired because one set comes from the father and one from the mother
organism; since they each also have two pairs of genes this has the
effect of 'shuffling' gene combinations. Let's say two plants are
being bred and have a 'gene' that controls petal color. The dominant
gene is white, recessive is red. Assuming both genes are in the
population being bred you'll get the following combinations:
white/white
white/red
red/white
red/red
Only the last combination gets you red flower petals. Once you have
an organism with only recessive genes, it can only contribute those
genes to future generations, increasing the likelyhood that you'll
generate more organisms with both recessives.
Some recessive traits are mutations or flaws that cause the
resulting organism to have poor health; when populations inbreed these
traits can emerge and become dominant within that population unless
"fresh" genes are brought in from another group. Some royal families
in Europe developed hemophilia or mental defects due to inbreeding.)

Hmmm. "Yes." One begets the other (strangely apropos due to
the biblical discussion...). The lack of diversity in the gene set
exaggerates the effects of any defects.
I also agree that Adam and Eve could not have bred the entire
human population - there would be practically no genetic diversity in
the human race if they had. Two things - the story of Adam and Eve
can easily be taken as allegory without "invalidating" the Bible; also
(if I recall), the Bible itself says that Cain and Abel married women
from... other tribes(?) so Adam and Eve being 'first' did not
necessarily mean they were the 'only' humans available to breed.

I realize you're joking, but getting an egg a day from a
chicken won't feed a tribe, and they each want to get the most energy
from the animal as fast as they can because they don't know how long
they'll be around and they don't want to leave an advantage behind for
those that survive them.
