INSTANT REVIEW: Next Year's TV Shows

been leaked to the tubes, the re-make of 'The Bionic Woman' and the
'Terminator' spin-off 'The Sarah Connor Chronicles'. See:

Both look pretty good, or at least they're not moronic game shows that
require no skill or intelligence from the contestants, or moronic
reality shows that require no skill or intelligence from the viewers.
Or maybe I'm just starving for something good to watch, since there
won't be any new Battlestar Galactica or Heroes for a while. Not that
those shows are any good, they're just better than a lot of the other
crap.
WARNING: THAR BE SPOILERS AHEAD!!! Ye have been warned!! Arrr.
Bionic Woman: Not a bad choice for a re-make, but Geez Louise why
can't Hollywood come up with a new concept or premise or idea now and
again? Anyways, this show is littered with Battlestar Galacta actors
who already know they should be looking for work next year. Starbuck
(Katee Sackhoff) plays a bionic woman (not the titular Bionic Woman),
who is slightly off her rocker in a big way. The show opens with her
getting her head blown off by her boyfriend, but it is revealed later
that her bloodstream is full of midichlorians or some such nonsense,
so she's OK not too long afterwards.
The titular Bionic Woman, Jamie Sommers (Michelle Ryan (yeah, I never
heard of her either)) is a bartender with a goth/punk/deaf little
sister to take care of, played by Kelly Osbourne, I think. Odds are
if the show lasts an entire season, there will be some storyline about
her getting bionic ears, or maybe Spock ears. Jamie's boyfriend is
NOT Steve Austin this time, but sort of a young Rudy Wells, since he's
the guy that installs all of her new parts after Starbuck tries to
kill him with Optimus Prime, and this 'accident' is the cause of
Jamie's re-construction. This time around, she gets the bionic legs
and the arm, and the ear, but also a bionic eye. For some reason, the
ear and the eye take a lot longer to boot up, because they don't start
working for a while. Also, since she's the titular Bionic Woman,
maybe she'll get bionic tits someday.
Bionic Tits could come in pretty handy, if she had to poke somebody's
eye out or maybe cut a guy in half with a well-aimed lactation. I
recall that in Martin Caidin's original novel 'Cyborg', upon which
'The Six Million Dollar Man' was based, Steve Austin's replacement eye
did not give him vision (or the nifty heads-up display qualities of
this newest bionic eye), but was simply a camera in his eye socket.
Perhaps one of Jamie's bionic tits could also be a camera, which would
require her to flash her intended photographic subject before taking a
picture, which would no doubt make sure the subject was paying
attention to her. It would also make holiday/vacation snapshots much
more interesting, or disturbing, at least to the people being
photographed. But I digress.
During the scenes where Jamie is undergoing her (supposedly) many
surgeries and reconstructions, we meet Oscar Goldman (who is not
actually Oscar Goldman, played by Miguel Ferrer (OK, he's not playing
a character named Oscar Goldman, and he's also not Richard Anderson,
the original Oscar Goldman)), who is not actually Oscar Goldman but is
actually some other clown in charge of all this stuff. He doesn't
really have a firm grip on things, since his first bionic woman went
wacko-bazoo crazy after sleeping with the guy who blew her branes out
at the start of this pilot (the sleeping with part took place before
the branes-blowing part), and wacky renegade Rudy Wells-type guy
builds a second bionic woman (the one with the tits) without his
(Not-Oscar)'s permission. This guy is basically screwed, because he
doesn't wear glasses and can't rip them off his face dramatically as
he's trying to make a point. That was Richard Anderson's sole purpose
on the old bionicle people shows. This Not-Oscar-Goldman is a pretty
one-dimensional evil manager type. So far.
I should point out at this time that Richard Anderson and Richard Dean
Anderson are two totally different people. Richard Dean Anderson
would make a great Oscar Goldman, maybe appearing as Not-Oscar's
seldom-seen boss. If Hollywood uses that idea, I want some goddamn
money, goddammit.
Getting back to Jamie's transformation into the titular Bionic Woman,
I feel that this was essentially glossed over. She had a bad dream or
two, and then she wakes up and is now a total ass-kicking cyborg, with
some residual 'oh what have you done to me?' scenes with the
boyfriend, plus some ripoff scene where Spider-Man^WBionic Woman
discovers that she can leap across rooftops. There should have been
at least some physical therapy, unless they want us to believe that
these bionic limbs are so good and the midichlorians are so kick-ass
that therapy is unneccessary. Well, maybe, but I'm not exactly buying
it. Oh yeah, she was also pregnant, but NOT ANYMORE, which will no
doubt provide some angsty scenery-chewing opportunities in later
episodes. If the show doesn't get cancelled, of course.
The rest of the show is action sequence after action sequence, with
some interplay with deaf/punk/goth little sister, and more time with
Evil Wacky Starbuck. The little sister soap-opera bit will get really
annoying really fast, until she gets her Spock ears or gets killed
off. I could go either way on that, but the Wacky Starbuck angle
looks kind of interesting, since she's also driven by some other
nutjob (not the boyfriend that blew her head off), some guy that
enjoys elective autosurgery, not too sure what that's all about. We
also get some glimpses into the capabilities of the bionic eye with
the heads-up display and threat-assessment thingie, which has some
yet-to-be-explored possibilities.
The show concludes with Jamie not-sort-of-reluctantly agreeing to work
for Miguel Ferrer, but on her own terms, because she's like an
empowered 21st century chyk or whatever. I look forward to seeing
where they go with this show, but I dread the whole punk/deaf/goth
sister angle, unless she gets her Spock ears.
I should also mention that the visual effects were not complete on
this leaked version, so there are scenes where Jamie is staring at her
'bionic' arm, which is actually her real arm with little motion
control thingies on her knuckles.
The Sarah Connor Chronicles: This show is set between the second and
third Terminator movies, with not-Linda-Hamilton (Lena Headey
(fnarr)(yeah I'd never heard of her either)) as the titular Sarah
Connor, and some clown as the savior-of-the-humans John Connor. Sarah
has apparently settled down with some other clown, and also can't hold
down any other job except for 'diner waitress'. I guess you go with
what you know, and I'm in no position to judge. I don't get paid for
writing these things, folks. Also, insert previous rant obout
Hollywood having no new ideas.
As alluded to in the various Terminator movies, Sarah and John Connor
move around quite a bit, one step ahead of the law or various
Terminators, so they leave the stability of Nebraska for the wacky,
Terminator-infested wiles of New Mexico. John Connor meets up with
Summer Glau, the unstoppable waif-like killing machine from
'Serenity', who plays an unstoppable waif-like killing machine
Terminator (or more correctly, Terminatrix). She really needs to
think about avoiding getting typecast, unless there will be a lot of
roles for unstoppable waif-like killing machines in upcoming movies.
She's one of the 'good' Terminatrixes, and has a good scene with Sarah
after she removes bullets from her shoulder while topless (always a
good idea), and Sarah has to remind Summer to 'put those things back
in their holster', whereupon Summer puts her brassiere back on. I
don't know why Terminatrixes really need to bother with undergarments
or lingerie, but maybe there's a marketing tie-in somewhere. I
certainly wouldn't mind seeing Summer Glau plastered all over the
nearest Victoria's Secret store, perhaps with the slogan "If you don't
buy me these panties, I'll rip your lungs out through your nose-hole".
If Victoria's Secret uses that ad campaign, I want some goddam money,
goddammit.
Speaking of Summer Glau, I must now mention The Firefly Curse. Nobody
wants to admit it, but this show is doomed. Like Invader Zim DOOMED,
only more so. The Firefly Curse has already killed 'Stargate SG-1'
(Morena Baccarin), and Fox's much-hyped 'Drive' (Captain Reynolds).
Both shows were canceled, just like Firefly, even after a good
ten-year run by Stargate. Damn that Morena Baccarin, she might be
easy on the eyes but she can sure kill a TV show. And since Jewel
Staite (also easy on the eyes) is joining the cast of 'Stargate:
Atlantis' next season, you may as well fire up your useless internet
petitions now, you basement-dwelling losers.
There's plenty of action in this show from beginning to end, but I
don't think they're going to have the budget for more than a couple of
episodes with a T-1000-type Terminator, even though those sort of
special effects are much cheaper these days. We'll see what happens.
On the whole, I found these two pilots to be mostly OK, they both
could have been better as pilots go. I'm eagerly anticipating
watching these shows, because there's nothing I like better than
sitting on my ass in front of my HDTV watching cute chyx kick ass.
Maybe that Joss Whedon clown had it right all along.

Either I have been concentrating too much on my plans for world
domination or am just still st00pid...I didnt see all the hype for
"Drive"-was it any good?

Those things worked well for a few seasons of SG-1, and that other
show that got bombarded with peanuts to get put back on (Stargate
command informed me about that-no, really!)

No therapy, no training, nothing. She refuses to read the instruction
manual too.
Note: Unlike 'Bionic Woman' Sarah Connor, which not brilliant, was well
done and enjoyable.

They did this in the original Bionic Man with the Jamie character too.
They originally left the bionic parts low-powered for her to get used
to and to try to make sure they were functioning properly. Then then
increased the power later ... after which point she started having
headaches, etc. and going nutso.

parallel universes?
For instance, there might be a parallel universe in which The Sopranos
had the ending most people were lusting after, and Tony got whacked.
Of course, that raises the question of how close two universes have to
be to be considered parallel.

work for the SGC. McKay visits Jeannie and her husband (Caleb) and
daughter. They don't really know what to think of him, and McKay and
his sister bicker about the past. Rodney wants her to come with him
and help out for a few months because she's almost as brilliant as he
is and would be a great help to the Stargate Program. Jeannie balks
until McKay beams her aboard the Daedalus. McKay then reveals that
Jeannie's calculations can help solve the problems that plagued
Project Arcturus. Instead of trying to draw zero point energy from our
own universe and release hazardous exotic particles, McKay plans to
draw energy from a parallel universe via a matter bridge so the exotic
particles would be vented into the hopefully uninhabited parallel
universe instead.

Actually, the pot got a bad rap in this overly concerned PC world. He
WASN'T calling the kettle black, per se. He was merely making an
observation, and when later questioned by Entertainment Weekly,

Ah, but parallel universes are infinite, so there will be some where the
writing and plots were good throught its entire run...
There will even be a few where it ran to its 10th season like sg1 and was
sorely missed when it ended. There may even be one where it'll rival doctor
who for longevity.
In a multiverse of infinite improbabilities... anything that could happen,
will happen somewhere/when.

Infinite does not necessarily mean anything that could happen,
will happen. One can approach infinity at different rates. If
pigs had wings, they still couldn't fly. Well, they'd have

Forward time travel is happening at all times, and even science-fictiony
forward time travel is already possible in both theory and very-near-term
practice.

Angela seems to have a very narrow definnition of what may be on topic
in her sad little kingdom. On topic is ONLY what she says it is. And, I
suspect that her definition of on topic does NOT actually include
Quantum science's theories of Parallel/alternate universes, but only
weird science fantasy worlds. I could be wrong, but I have never seen
her actually EXPLAIN what IS on topic, just what she considers Off

Hey, no problem, you can even hang out at my place and we can watch the
DVDs of the first three series, if you like. Lucas sure knows dialogue
and emotional scenes, and that wacky Jangper CG character and his crazy
physical comedy livens up any scene he's in, and that is just about all
of them! I can't wait for the Firefly/Charmed crossover episode that's
been promised.

Yes, I've seen that. I suspect that she thinks that Parallel Universes
have to do with Fantasy, faries, magic and such, and NOT Quantum
theories.

Oh yeah, a few Sherlock connections there; intentional, I believe, from what
the writers have said. House/Holmes and Watson/Wilson, for one. I like
medical dramas but this is more than that, like "Life on Mars" is more than
just a cop show. Which is what makes it more interesting.

HOUSE MD is the best show of any sort currently in production, for my money.
It might be the best show ever made, as far as I can see, so far.
Happily, it has a few weaknesses sprinkled here and there. Thank the

One of the things I hated about American Idol (?) was how nasty Simon
Cowell (sp?) was towards the contestants. But with House, it is
somehow, likable.

I didn't know his accent was fake until I saw the bonus features on the DVDs
and I really don't like medical dramas... I avoided House because of that
until I saw one episode on late night TV, and Now my wife and I are watching
the DVDs (netflix is awesome for that) and we can't get enough. it is simply
the best thing on TV.
There is a bit of "mystery diagnosis" in House but it isn't really a medical
drama, not like anything else that has been on TV calling House a medical
drama would be like calling The Shield a cop show, (I gave up on The Shield
but at its best it really couldn't be described as just a police drama),
House is more of a detective show, with House as Holmes...
I have only seen one episode of Scrubs, it was... wacky, funny... but not
something I would seek out, or set Tivo to record.
