Lots of doors, usually open, and a malfunctioning doorbell.

Wood paneled walls with cloth above a waist-high oak molding.

An eclectic mix of furnishings including some low overstuffed couches and a
long library table with wooden school chairs.

A set of bookshelves along one wall with titles ranging from "History of the
US Air Force" and "Speculative Fiction of the 20th Century" to "Myths and
Legends of Babylonia" and "Norse Mythology: Propaganda of Aliens?".

Green shaded brass desk and floor lamps giving a comforting glow...

...and the newest gigahertz-plus Dell PC with the THX and VCR wired into the
surround sound and big-screen flat-TV....

You forgot something...
A big full length picture of O'Niell on one wall.
A big full length picture of Danny on the other.

And a crowd of women alternately adoring the picture of their choice, and
glaring venomously at the women who appear to be preferring the other
picture.

The two aren't mutually exclusive! :)

Now I pictured a bright convention center for SG1 fans who
have attention deficit syndrome. There would be tables all around with
signs hanging above them that say things like "S/J rules"," S/J
sucks", OOOOOOh, Daniels bare feet!","obscure remarks", Sarcasm as a
weapon", etc... near the walls are tables with signs that say "Gun
Control", "Things only a pilot could possibly care about", ancient
Scottish runes", "Government conspiracies" and "Whatever".
Everyone is very polite except for a very few people who can't
help but be contrary. The really wierd thing would be that everyone
would take turns talking and actually wait till the next person is
done before replying. Everyone will flit from table to table and take
up a dozen different conversations while there.
But the strangest thing would be that the people at each table
would take turns watching a big TV, and then they would change the
discussion based on what was seen. Many people would run around with
their eyes covered and wearing earplugs and saying things like "Don't
tell me, I want to see for myself!"

Or OTOH, it might just be some guy's basement with thick orange shag
carpet, dark fake wood panelling, a big screen tv, lots of booze, and
a group a friends hanging out together on some comfy couches. :)

Why Minot? you ask. Well. Why not Minot? (A great slogan for a travel
poster.) The regulars are always coming and going as they go about their
daily routine and we have those who stop by from time to time, as well
as those who who just pass through once on their way to some other
destination.

On arrival, we look for familiar faces/names and settle in for a chat
before our next departure, or we listen to the latest gossip while
eating overpriced, stale Tasty Kakes. We have the occasional flurry of
excitement when some celebrity passes through, and we have the awkward,
and sometimes amusing moments when the trolls pass through on their way
to, or from, a European soccer match.

Then there are those moments of diversion when someone, or something
unusual (Like pilot-less planes or today's glowing monkey news story.)
passes through leaving a trail of off-topic threads.

Well. This baboon is going to wander around for a little while longer
before rejoining his troop for today's flight. This should be a good
flight today because Stargate SG-1 is one of the in-flight movies. Wait
a minute. I can't find ANDI. Could someone turn off the lights for a
minutes so I can see his glow?

Oh, sweet! Boys talk about soft furnishings too!<g>

A huge room with plain pale walls, lots of posters of films, TV shows, and
big comfy sofas and armchairs. Oh, and coffee makers scattered throughout.
Got to have caffeine. And a kitchen area. Microwave. Probably a smoking
zone but can I ask for lots of air filters? Thanks.

Yes, to all of the above. Smoking is fine as long as I can get away with it.
And you took down the dead animals on the walls, right? Would find that a
little hard to cope with.

And the pictures of Jack and Daniel are going to be put near to one another so
one doesn't have to keep turning one's head to see them both? And a nice
picture of Teal'c? And a picture of Sam opposite a picture of Martouf so they
can see each other. Oh and we'd better fill out a requisition form for the
Lisas on that Major Davis picture so they don't feel left out.

Other than that I think it sounds absolutely perfect.

Agreed - to the napping bit. Pshaw! Women like comfort too, darling. Plump
seat cushions so you sink into them when you lie down. Big padded armrests,
just large enough so that when you're lying down your head is propped at the
correct angle for drinking hot chocolate - don't want that whipped cream
going up your nose or anywhere it's not supposed to.

That should have been 'get away *from* it' (very bad typing day yesterday,
obviously) as I don't smoke and it makes me cough. Don't like to stop other
people doing it though. Same with people eating meat. But pretty please on the
stuffed animal heads? Really find them incredibly squick-making. How about if

I didn't mean the woman buying the couch, I meant buying the couch FOR the
women...

Once it's beyond their influence as to what to buy style-wise, it seems most
women appreciate a nice comfy couch.

Reminds me of an uncle of mine who likes his tea so light, you pour hot
water into the cup, and think about jiggling the tea-bag in it. Ridiculous.

Live animals - um, no, can't have that. The cats will rip up the sofa, the
soundproofing on the walls as well as the heavy cinema curtains near the big
screen (did I mention I upgraded it to a big projection TV with wall-sized
screen, a-la home theater?)

The dogs will slobber on the couches and chase the cats up the curtains!
What a distraction.

I'd suggest a fish tank instead, containing our own Goa'uld larvae... heh,
maybe not. Tropical fish, yeah, that'd do.

Hey, I used to be a ten cups of very strong coffee a day, girl, but then I
discovered migraines. (Well, okay, they discovered me.) Go on, be a sport, let
me have my weedy decaff cappuccino while you all taunt me with your Columbian

There's another way to have tea? Personally I think showing the teabag to the
hot water is plenty. They can wave to one another politely without ever needing
to meet.

Aww, what a swiz. I was just planning to go and buy a nice Egyptian Mau to keep
the Stargate motif going.

What about a small dog? My dog is really *very* small and only has three legs

<Sigh> Okay, will settle for tropical fish. They are soothing and vaguely
hypnotic which will probably prevent too many arguments breaking out. If people
start to get tetchy then can be directed over to the fish tank. Ten minutes of
staring at shoals of neon tetras swimming about and they'll probably forget
what they were angry about altogether.

Yep. That sounds about right. Why can't they understand that buying a sofa
which has a completely different pattern from your curtains, with colours
that would clash, is a bigger consideration than the concealed drinks holder
in the armrest, and buying it would be tantamount to cruelty and possible
grounds for breaking up?

Mind you, if it was 50% off in a sale and had a 'pocket' where you could
place books and chocolate bars, well, you could always buy new curtains...

Is that as in chocolate sponge biscuits with orange filling, or something

Hey!

I've got a 12 or 13 foot couch I picked up from a buddy because it was
impossible to get it into his 2nd floor apartment without a crane and
removing a window...

...all of my (our) other furniture are light colored wood to match it...

...and it's the best for naps...and other things.

It's great, of course it's had to go through windows on occasion...

Go down nicely after anything or before anything or all by themselves
actually.

I rarely get to eat any. If there's a box in the house I have to hide
it if I want to get even a nibble!

Does the orange stuff taste "orange", or is it like cream
filling with orange coloring? It sounds like a great Halloween food
because of the coloring.
I really can't talk about snack foods since I like to make a
mix of M&Ms and Fritos (salty corn chips). :)

the "orange stuff" is a very orangey tasting jelly - that's why
they're called "Jaffa cakes" (jaffa oranges). the cakes (and
legally they are cakes, not biscuits or cookies) are discs about
2 inches across, a half inch thick layer of light sponge cake,
a thin layer of orange jelly and then a thin chocolate coating
on the top. (you can also get "all chocolate" versions where
the entire cake is dipped in chocolate)

They're very *moreish* and all this discussion is making me
wish I had some stashed in the house - but hubby ate the last
box as soon as we got home from the supermarket last
week. (yes, the whole box)

It's black pudding mate. Do you think we would be so uncivilised as to call

OOOOOOOOOOOH. BLACK pudding! That makes eating congealed blood and fat

I like to kid my British Friends about the food, but only
because I like almost everything else about your country.

Of course, my mom can take vegetables, rice & bread, and make

I like the idea of an Egyptian cat. The furniture is going to be worn

I think that there have been a lot of really nice images of this.
But when the question was first asked the first thing I thought was that it
modelled the
common room of my six form collage, if not in form in function.

Basically in the common room you have lots of totally different people with
totally different personalities having to coexist with each other with very
little to nothing that everyone shares, so you end up with groupings.
The quiet ones sit as near as the door as possible
The load solitary ones next to the stereo
the sociable ones in a big circle in the middle
And the people who float from one group to the other to try and find a home.

Well that's how I see us, but with one BIG difference, we have one BIG thing
in common, so the system changes completely, because its not forced
coexisting, its voluntary conversation that takes on a personality of its
own.

The way I imagine this ng is kind of the same, there are lots of different
groups talking about different things, the shippers - who talk of love, the
anti-shippers -who talk of why love isn't suitable, the military familiar
people - who talk of tactics and fire power, the science guys - who talk of
why "that's not possible". and then the lurkers who go from group to group
just listing. to name a few.

But the difference to RL comes when someone stands up on a chair in view of
all these groups and says "This is what I think, ... what do you think?" and
rather than just a few people saying "uh I suppose, I haven't really got an
opinion". Everyone, from every group and every association starts to
expresses their view.
And then suddenly they find that they aren't too different from the group
sitting across from them.
The shippers and the anti shippers find that there quite similar, the
militants express the view point that no one expects ......and then suddenly
.....there aren't any predefined groups and everyone's mixing ... united by
there common interest.

And so we end up in a room, there are lots of people all in groups but their
not limited to being in just one, the groups are all mixed up with one
another,
were talking as equals, laughing, sharing information, opinions, and a
common
interest...
a love of sg1

oh yeah and there are lots of posters on the wall
and a never ending coffee jug

Well we'd better get some pot plants for the patio and a nice bench or
something so you can sit out there in comfort. It sounds like Steve is going to

Well I think I top you on the sadness because my mother had to explain to me
who Robbie Williams was. My only knowledge of Boyzone is that Sky One put one
of their concerts on when I was waiting to watch Foothold and I had to go and
write a story which involved removing all of Daniel's clothing to console
myself. I'm sure they're great but to me they will always be the people who
stopped me getting my Stargate rations.

That's true. I still have one of those 'gatti aerobic' thingies really gullible
people bought for their cats about five years ago which my cats never looked at
once, that has a scratch post so the comfortable couches would be safe. The
tropical fish might be a little imperilled though.

Perhaps we should just console ourselves for the lack of cats and dogs with
more pictures of Jack, Daniel, and Teal'c looking handsome, what do you think?
We can say they're there just to remind everyone that this is a *Stargate*
newsgroup and not for their ogleableness at all. (I know that isn't a word, but
I think it should be.)

You know, I always suspected this. And you do know we don't really talk about
naked men all the time as well, don't you? (Shshh, Lisa, Ankh, it's worth a
try.) We actually talk about um...astrophysics, of course. Gosh, subatomic
particles, hate em or ignore them you can't change their atomic weight without
building a particle accelerator the size of the Andromeda system. We love that
stuff. (Damnit, Lisa, *hide* the chocolate covered Major Davis. You're
completely blowing our cover here.) Pauli's exclusion principle. The
possibility of quarks having little quarks. Gosh, yes. Absolutely the first
topic of conversation whenever two female Stargate fans are gathered together.

I wouldn't let *him* decorate a rabbit hutch. Not a man who understands the
importance of comfort in decorating. He'd paint over our nice wood panelling
and then do unpleasant things with MDF. I will put my trust in the boys of the
NG and their scatter cushions instead.

Um, well...I can see the attraction definitely. Mansize Lego that comes when
you call it, or even when you don't call it. But I think that possibly some
aspects of the replicators might make them a slightly less than socially
responsible pet. Fish sound good. Let's stick with the fish.

Hey, Sam is entitled to some eye candy too. Fairs fair and we *are* working on
your calendar for you: Sam for January, Janet for Feb, Sha're for March, Osiris
for April, Shaunac for May, Dryac Mk1 for June, Dryac Mk2 for July, Kinthia for
August, Kendra for September, Anise for October, Kira for November, and Shyla
for December. There you go. Proof positive TPTB think of you often and don't
just wiggle Daniel's toes at us women to keep the ratings up.

I think he was horrified by the amount we managed to smoke at SG2, of course
being hysterically excited about the whole event didnt help.

Definitely. Kim wants to know what we want on the webiste (its official you
know!) and I'm thinking of asking for naked photos and a direct line to
order the chocolate dipped Major D's, although I'm not sure thats what Colin
has in mind for it.

LOLOL! I blame the bloody Corrs! If I saw that flipping advert for them
once more at Christmas I was going to scream, I kept watching all the
adverts so I could see the new SG advert and every time I got that silly
little man and the Corrs.

Boyzone are great though, I have to say.

Kenco it is then. Will one jar be enough? Never tried a soya milk
before, but I'm game. Are you allergic to the cow variety? Oh, the
Janet ruse should work a treat, although you might have to vary it a
bit after a few times. Even our guys aren't that gulibble! <run>

Well, there you are then. We wouldn't even have to buy one.

Oh, we'd just plonk a lid on top of the tank, a transparent one, and
then the cat/s could sit on it and watch the fish swimming about. :-)

Oh, you give up too easily, we can have both. <g> If the boys can
have the dead heads on the walls, we should be allowed live, small and
*whole* animals, surely? Anyway, Chimera has some too, and since this

LOL! I think I need a dictionary! I have a feeling we're running out
of wall space though. Has anyone counted how many pictures people
want to put up, I think the ceiling, the doors, and even the floor may
be already taken.

I'm definitely on Steve's side here, in fact, I'll get my daughter to
design some Stargate themed 'No Smoking' signs, just in case some
people try the 'I didn't know I can't smoke here' trick. But yes,
let's be kind to the poor souls and allow them some comfort outside.

Well, I think we all get a virtual quiver when RB posts.

But I do think that the military input from

Yes, it's always fascinating to hear the military perspective, and invaluable
from a f*nf*c writing point of view. I really appreciate hearing how Jack's
actions etc are perceived by people who have done the same job as him.

Yes, that might work. Although they might still want to put their hands over
their ears and say 'lalalalalalalala' a lot as well. Perhaps we need a very
good stereo system so we can have opera blaring out very loudly when the new
spoilers come in?

>But Martof?? How's about that nice Lieutenant?

Do you mean Simmons? He's a bit young though, isn't he? And he's not really
hot, just sweet and attractive.

But Martouf is *hot*. (Why are guys so slow about noticing these things?) Quick
helpful guide for guys to hot men in Stargate:

These men are *very* hot:
Daniel. Jack. Teal'c. Martouf. Major Davis. (Any reasonably handsome man can
however be upgraded to super hotness by being nice to Daniel.)

These men are lovable and comforting. They are not really hot but we love them
very much:
Hammond. Bra'tac. Jacob.

These men are pretty hot but have the potential to be hotter if they take the
appropriate steps:
Siler. Aldwyn. Coburn. Simmons etc.

These men are not hot:
Maybourne. Nyen. *Any man who isn't nice to Daniel. **

*Except Jack who has a note from his mother for special occasions, but he can
only fail to be nice to Daniel for a couple of episodes at the most or he
starts losing serious hotness points.

**And except Apophis who just is hot regardless even when he is being
thoroughly mean. And Heru'Ur was quite hot too...but apart from that you
definitely can't be hot and mean to Daniel.

Perhaps a large jar?

Never tried a soya milk

I can drink diary milk if I have to but too many cups and I start to feel
queasy. I think of our NG as a place where a lot of coffee would probably be
drunk.

Good thinking. I'll throw in a few 'Look, naked Sam!'s for variety.

Cats sounds even better to me. Two kittens? We could watch them watching the
fish and it would distract us from making loud complaints when the boys were
watching their football games and playing pool.

I think we would have to guarantee the safety of his fish. In my experience
even the most even tempered men tend to get tetchy when one's cats tear up the
furniture *and* eat the fish.

That's a point. Perhaps we just need to make the room bigger? The alternative
would involve taking down pictures of Daniel or Jack, and that would clearly be
impractical.

Yep, I've "stepped into the light" as it were, I've managed to negociate

One, don't make it a patio - make it a seperate room and non-smokers
have to accept that smoking will go on in there if they want to enter.
Two - can we put the place in virtual Amsterdam? ;-)

I'll see if they do a tin, which we could keep as a refill for the
jar. I mean, you have to keep the coffee in something made of glass,
not paper.

That goes without saying, although tea might be in high demand as
well. Of course, the bar will also be very busy, Steve has very
kindly set aside a place for my bottle of malt whisky (which you're

Sounds like a plan, two kittens it is. As for the pool table and the
TV, maybe we could grant the boys a small extension with sound-proof
walls...hmm, but then we would never see them, would we, so perhaps we
could put up with a bit of noise.

I think we are safe, Kris hasn't got any fish, *unless* he will be

Yes tea will be very high in demand as I dont drink coffee and I have to
drink a cup of tea every half an hour or I go into a decline. I'm afraid
we're one of those families that is always "popping the kettle on" at a drop
of a hat. I'm hoping you've made room for my bottle of Baileys, no new ep
of Stargate can be watched without Baileys or a Snowball.

Mmmm, not a cat person here I'm afraid, can we have a puppy as well, they do
cute things too, like chewing your feet and yapping alot.

Ah, if you're having two kittens then I'm afraid I want to bring my dog,
she's really very sweet and loves to lie on the bed next to me watching
Stargate, she also doubles up as a very nice hot water bottle when its a
chilly day and she does like to talk so I'm sure she could talk to the boys
about their guns as she has been out shooting with Peter.

Oh, of course, you can park your bottles right next to mine, Lisa! If

No, definitely can't call Football soccer - it's such a wimpy name for proper
football. Widescreen would be cool for the footie, pity it's not filmed in
widescreen yet.

(as an aside - MoTD broadcast on digital in widescreen, but the highlights of the
matches have blue bars down the side - grrrr!!)

AH but I have big soppy retrievers that LOVE kittens, nothing so sweet as a
nervous kitten in its new home being washed all over by a big black
flatcoated retriever then watching it curl up to sleep between the dogs
paws.... <awww>

BUT, here's a thought, if we might just possibly want a visit from say, oh,
RDA ... then maybe we should get a few Australian Shepherds running around
in the garden......we do *have* a garden don't we????

as for the limit on pictures.... sheesh, don't we get a proper shrine

Well, maybe, but it looks like Chimera will only be allowing three
live mammals, and yours is No 5 (two kittens, a puppy and Lisa's dog).
It appears that some negotiations may be necessary...

My dog is a biggish one I'm afraid, although I'm prepared to forego the
puppy if I can keep Lucy with me, she is a rare breed, the lesser known
Muppet hound and tends to do alot of flumping around and stupid things like
running around with a slipper that no one is interested in to start with and
when she gets broody she collects all the My LIttle Ponies in the house and
pretends they're puppies.

She's quite useful as a guard dog as we may need to protect ourselves if any
Trekkies come to trash our room because its better than theirs, much like
our show is better than theirs.

Maybe it'll end up being an embassy?

At last!! AOL has been giving me a wimpy 'We're sorry message boards and
newsgroups are currently unavailable. Please try again in a few minutes'
message for hours now. *And* I didn't get to see The Light until 4am this
morning. Lisa, me dear I'll send your tapes tomorrow. Had them all parcelled up
ready when a friend called with some really bad news so have been with her
since then. Have to go back there in a minute but just needed to say hi to the
NG. I missed it. Will make sure I go to the PO tomorrow though. Don't want you
deprived of your Stargate rations.

While I was away I see Death Bunny has killed the fish with the stereo,
probably adversely affecting sound quality at the same time, and the men are
belittling each other's national games. Ankh probably needs to distract them
with her pom poms.

Oh you'd already put out the call for pom poms, that's great. She is probably
just getting them refluffed.

She sounds really sweet. I think she would make the place seem very
comfortable. Eva, how upsetting do you find larger dogs? Would it ruin your
pleasure if we had Lisa's muppety dog around? My dog is very small but he
doesn't like big dogs unless they are sighthounds (he was fine with our old
deerhound but didn't like the Belgian shephered dog) so he would probably be
stroppy with Lisa's dog. Lisa's dog sounds more like the kind of dog the men
would tolerate too. My brother calls my dog a 'rat on stilts', and I suspect
this might be the consensus.

Don't we have to call them 'Trekkers' these days? And do they have different
names if they like the next generation one, or the one on the space station, or
the other one whose name I can't remember?

Why not install those rotating advertising hoardings you see nowadays?
Then you can have three pictures in the space of one!
Just plunk yourself down in front of one and be enthralled by the ever
changing pictures. <grin>

And what about us who can't stand tea or coffee, blasphemy I know,
will Bovril be supplied?

Actually, you can get some really entertaining matches that finish scoreless! :-)
Although I personally find football much more entertaining when Sunderland score even
one more goal than their opponants. Yaaayyyyy!!

I used to follow American football - supported the LA Raiders - but I got bored with
it. It stops too much for my taste.

Guess it backfired a bit since the first reply to your post was from a woman - a weird
woman granted, but still a woman! LOL!

Well I guess it fits in well with many of the posts here - I mean, just how many times
can some people write about toes and blue eyes! ;-) I tell you, I think I need to keep
a cloth by my monitor to wipe up the drool that leaks out from some of those threads -
the series 5 wish list especially. <g>

Oh I like that idea! That would definitely keep me amused for hours. Perhaps
someone who is good with computers could set it up so it changed like on a
wallpaper program. Perhaps with a different beeping noise to tell people which
delectable studmuffin is currently on display? Of course, the health and safety
guy might have a problem with the Lisas running down the room to get a better
look every time Major Davis came around but the men could talk guns and sports
to him to distract him. Eva, Diane, and Erika should of course be automatically
granted chairs very near to the screen itself so they don't miss any
appearances by Jack. I will just hover and lean on the back of Eva's chair
ogling all of the pictures indiscriminately. This is definitely a winning idea
in my book.

Bovril, Horlicks, cocoa, those instant thingummies in sachets I can't remember
the name of right now, you know the ones that have marshmallows floating about
in them? Lucozade for people with colds who still couldn't stay away? What
else?

I like pigs. Smart creatures. Animal Farm was just a wicked rumour spread
about by cows and chickens.

Let's be traditional and go for round and phallic. Why mess with a winning
formula? I do insist on at least one cactus, the appearance of which causes
one of the boys to wince and move swiftly away.

I'm going to show my ignorance here: what is ICQ? And do I want it? Is it
like AIM? Chatting would be lovely.
