GATERS,

Sorry about the secrecy. As most of you now know, Michael Shanks had a
medical "episode" about a month ago. I had promised PEOPLE MAGAZINE
the exclusive so I kept the story under wraps until they ran in. Of
course they backed out, so here it is...

The Story: Stargate SG-1 was preparing to shoot “Nemesis,” the season
finale for the third season. This episode is the most expensive
episode of Stargate SG-1 ever. Prior to commencing shooting, Michael
Shanks, who stars as Daniel Jackson, was rushed to the hospital with
severe abdominal pain in Vancouver where the show is based. Upon
arrival, it was determined that Shanks’ appendix had burst, a situation
which could be deadly. His appendix was immediately removed and he
spent the next several days recovering in the hospital. An all night
writer’s session was called, removing Shanks from the finale
storyline. As it stands now, Shanks will appear in one scene where
Colonel Jack O’Neill (played by co-star Richard Dean Anderson of
MacGuyver fame) visits him recovering in the hospital after, you
guessed it, an emergency appendectomy.

Michael Shanks had to say – I woke up in the morning thinking that
maybe I had some sort of stomach flu. 8 hours later I am sitting in
the emergency room and everyone is talking to me very gravely. I
hadn’t even considered that my appendix had burst, or that I could die
from it. I actually tried to plea bargain for an exam and some
antibiotics, because I didn’t want to affect the show’s production
schedule. The hospital staff wouldn’t hear of it and an hour later I
was under the knife. The next day the doctor came to my room and told
me he had never seen an appendix so bad. It was actually hiding behind
my liver. So I spent a week in the hospital, only to discover that on
my first day back that they have shot the show and the only scene
missing is me sitting in a hospital bed. Why didn’t they just come
shoot it in the hospital? I’m method acting here. I expect I’ll nail
the scene. Never underestimate the power of good research

Richard Dean Anderson had to say - Talk about an actor, I saw him do
"Hamlet" last summer and it was one of the most, deeply researched
portrayals I had ever seen in my life. Now for Daniel Jackson, well,
in the script there is one little scene that alludes to the fact that
the character has appendicitis . . . that's commitment – actually
getting the disease that's scripted. That's an actor. God, I love
that guy!

Brad Wright had to say - When I first heard that Michael had to have
his appendix removed my first thought was what a terrible ordeal he
must have gone through. My second thought, which occurred a fraction
of a second later, what that he played a fairly large part in the
season’s final episode. We debated how to address this problem until
Robert Cooper suggested “why don’t we give Daniel Jackson
appendicitis?” You know what they say, art imitates life.

I don't know why more shows don't have a PR person online for little
tidbits like this. It makes reading a NG much more interesting. Thanks

Ok, confirm for me--it actually BURST or was it just severely
inflamed? If it burst, there's a major risk of peritonitis and other
complications, which I would think would take more than a few days to
deal with.

JZ!

You are a god! Thank you SO much for sharing that with us. I mean,
obviously this wasn't going to be a secret for too long since PEOPLE
was supposed to run it, but still, who kows how long it would've been
before we ever heard anything? Please, please, please just keep the
tidbits coming. I know from dealing closely with rather noted actors
and behind the scenes talent in the Industry that I, too, often must
keep some goodies to myself. Privacy and trust dictate it. (My sis,
for example, works on the show ANGEL and tells me bits and pieces of
personal and production stuff that goes on every day. You better
believe there are fans out there dying to know what I know, but I can't
divulge. It would put her job and my cred at risk.)

I understand you have to filter even the small pieces you do get, but
understand, we are the show's biggest fans, right here, and support
these folks whole-heartedly. Let 'em know when you get a chance that
we are here and if they ever want to make our day, they can give you
some good stories to pass on to us.

In your ample free time, of course! =)

Again, many thanks!

When is "Nemesis"going to air on Showtime?? What made this episode of
"Stargate SG-1" so expensive?? Did Showtime change(push back) the schedule
of the show because of Michael Shanks' appendix emergency?? If not, why was
is changed(pushed back)??

The term the doctors used was "perforated." When they opened Michael
up they apparantly had to search for his appendix because it had
migrated.

Yummy.

Oh, and those of you who get the "Hollywood Exclusive" or "Celebrities"
column by Marilyn Beck and Stacey Jenel Smith in your local newspaper,
you'll see a mention of the Michael Shanks saga today.

Last I heard, Nemesis was going to be the season finale airing on Feb
11, 2000. Of course I would be the last to know if it changed. Unitl
yesterday, I thought the Dom DeLuise episode "Urgo" was airing tomorrow
night. Now I find out it has been pushed to January 14 or 21.

The reasons for these changes have not been revealed to me.
