I just watched it a while ago, myself... only for the first time. I think
Janeway's hair is just died, or highlighted. It couldn't possibly be a wig,
it's too...... real. >=^{0)
I belive that it's a wig. I have the first issue of the Starlog Voyager
magazine and it shows Kate Mulgrew as Janeway with short hair (the pics
are from "Caretaker"). I doubt that they waited for it to grow before
they filmed the pilot. So it must be a wig.
Thinking back, I remember how optimistic I'd been when I saw this premier.
Right from the getgo I could feel how much potential the show had. I kept
thinking, "Wow, this is going to be the best Trek ever, not like that boring
Deep Suck Nine!" I was glad I was wrong about DS9, so why am I so sad
thinking about this?

Wasn't it fun?
Maybe you don't think Voyager has lived up to your expectations?
When I first started watching Voyager, I wasn't sure what to expect. The
casting didn't really impress me much then, but I did think the premise was
really cool. Having a Star Trek ship thrown across the galaxy was a great
way for them to carry on the tradition of "seeking out new life and new
civilizations." It seemed like the perfect chance for them to push the
boundaries of the imagination. There have been some standout eps here and
there in this regard, but for the most part I don't think Voyager has lived
up to its potential.

Not to mention Torres also had more to do than she does now (granted she does

Hmm, they seem to be showing them in order here where I'm at. Are they
leaving it up to each affiliate to decide whether or not to go with the
theme approach?
The pilot episode was very good. Almost as good as the DS9 pilot and way
better than the TNG pilot (ick!)

Chakotay was excellent and he had a lot more gray hair. Neelix was terrific! He

That's another good ep, though. Tuvok once again has lines and plays an

I think it was her own hair, but with a fall added.
This question is covered in Stephen Poe's (aka Stephen E. Whitfield)
book "Star Trek Voyager: A Vision of the Future," which, by the way,
is pretty entertaining. Although it is very much a product of
cooperation (so you won't find any debunking), it has a lot of
interesting detail about what goes in to making the show.
Parts of "Caretaker" had to be reshot because it was originally shot
with Mulgrew's own hair down. It was about shoulder-length. After
quite a few scenes had been filmed, there was concern that Janeway's
hair didn't look good and the executives decided to go with her hair
up. That forced them to do a reshoot so it wouldn't look like Janeway
had decided to change her hairdo right in the middle of a crisis.
Poe/Whitfield relates that various Ocampa scenes were filmed in the
L.A. Convention Center and had to be reshot, along with a number of
other scenes, at very considerable expense.
The book has side-by-side pictures from the Convention Center showing
the difference.
By the way, I also think Mulgrew was much more heavily made up for
"Caretaker" -- too heavily. It's not just her hairline that's
different. Her skin is too. It's shinier, more uniform.

Actually getting to see the early episodes again (I never bothered to tape
any of them) reinforces just how much Russ has been mistreated as of late.
It's one thing to hear you say Tuvok's been sorely neglected, but it
really gets the point across when you see just how much he was used and
how little he is used now.

That screentime in season 5 would have been about equal to GW's and RDM's
without The Fight (according to Brandon's lines I think...although I haven't
gone back to check them...)
I still say that this has has more to do with Braga than RB...With the
exception of BRIEF moments in Course Oblivion, Nothing Human, and Bliss, (and a
couple of great scenes in Extreme Risk) Chakotay was written as the pacifying,
provider of alternatives, the loyal officer. IMO, of course, he didn't have
the screen time i would like to see, and considering what they could write for
Chakotay (same argument with Tuvok) and don't, I don't have much argument with
what RB did with what he was given. (And yes, like you, I prefer season 4's
writing for both characters in many ways--Nemesis and Waking Moments being 2
of my all-time favorites.)
I still believe that they don't want the male officers challenging Janeway, so
all that fun goes to Seven (and once in a blue moon, B'Elanna).

Since I haven't seen either, I can't comment on whether or not RB acts older
than TR, but I will let you know what I think after LA:-)
As for RB, I think his official bio lists him as being born in 1957, which
would make him three years older than me. I hit 40 with the millenium (not all
bad, since my 40th b-day present is this trip to LA). When RB is asked about
his age, he tells people he was born during the Eisenhower administration, so
he's somewhere between 42-46.

Ah, Steve, you are so... charming (?).
But you know you're showing your age. Curlers went out with the 60s.
Today brush rollers are practically archeological artifacts.
I have to admit, though, I never thought I'd wear my hair short, but I
do. It's more comfortable and easier. I expect it's what a Star
Fleet captain would do too.
As to the make-up, I have the impression Mulgrew doesn't like to wear
a lot because she doesn't like to be handled and fussed over.
Something I read somewhere. If true, then it must have been the
studio execs that were worried about her face, not her.

well, Wang looks like a man to me despite his youth, while RDM strikes
me as a boy. I don't think this has anything to do with *my* age, though

She was so warm and had such maturity. The scene in sickbay for
instance, when Neelix doesn't want to help Janeway & Co. any further now
that he has rescued Kes and she insists "with their help" - thus
prompting him to offer his support to the crew of Voyager, for
instance... Lien is fantastic here. I never understood where she took
such depth at her young age. In order to project depth you must have it
in you, and she had lots of it.

some of my all time favorite VOY-scenes... and one of the reasons why I

chemistry together right from the beginning...

probably yes, but he got "The Fight" as well and thus ended up as the #4
actor... which means he was quite prominent...

at least Chuckles was there... and he had friends. People aboard liked
him and asked his advice... or he was able to help (e.g. in B'Elanna's
case)...
> IMO, of course, he didn't have

how much more would you want to have? He's already the #4 character! He
had more than 160% of what Tuvok got! And much better stuff, too. Acting
challenges, character development - not just lines on the bridge or in
the briefing room every now and then...

material no matter what the quality?

Nemesis is definitely not among my favorites - I almost missed Tuvok's
appearance at the end the first time round, since I was about to fall
asleep. As for Waking Moments... well, that *does* have some redeeming
qualities IMO... :-)

Julianna
I *do* have all these eps on tape... so I have the direct comparison
between early eps and now - and it's just devastating to see the
difference. :-(((((
Early 50's??!! Good heavens. Well, that definately rates as one of
those "must be in the eye of the beholder", LOL. Both Beltran and Russ
look (and act I might add) to me to be in their early to mid 40's.
Maybe that's because I'm nearing 40 myself. I mean, I think Beltran
actually looks better with the grey.
Since neither have every married, that I know of, they both seems rather
"boyishly mature". If that makes any sense. And yes, I am generally
attracted to older men. Maybe that's why the Brad Pitt's and Tom
Cruise's of the world do absolutely nothing for me!

Share what you know. Learn what you don't.
I'm afraid the number of lines is irrelevant to me; if the lines are
repetitious not much you can do with that. And I don't feel that any
characters have had much "character development" with the exception of
Seven (with whom on occasion TPTB actually do a decent job) and to some
extent the Doctor and Harry. For the others, it seems they've either
stagnated or IMO regressed.
Unfortunately I have to agree with the pessimistic view of Paramount and
Braga. In some blurb I saw somewhere, Braga (or Berman?) said that
season six would continue to strengthen what they started in season
five. Whatever the hell that means.
Just peachy.
Well, everybody I tell Russ is 43 thinks I'm kidding and that he can't
be much older than 35 at best.

Russ certainly has that boyish charme. But he's also fit and athletic
and in pretty good shape, which makes him look younger than he is.

I have to agree on that - you should have included the RDM's of this
world...
you're kidding! He can't be *younger* than Russ?????? (* June 22, 1956) <<
Russ is just very young-looking for his age. <g>
For the record, here's everyone's birthdays, according to IMDb:
Kate Mulgrew: 29 April 1955
Robert Adame Beltrane: 19 November 1957
Roxane Dawson: 11 September 1964
Jennifer Lien: 24 August 1974
Robert Duncan McNeill: 9 November 1964
Ethan Phillips: 8 February 1955
Tim Russ: 22 June 1956
Robert Picardo: 27 October 1953
Jeri Lynn Ryan: 22 February 1968
Garrett Richard Wang: 15 December 1968
Gee, according to this, J/C, P/T, and K/7 are all couples where the woman is
older! <g>

Because IMDb has full names for some of them, but not others.
Someone should inform IMDb that Tim Russ was born Timothy Darrell....

I think that is one thing about RB that divides people. They either like or
dislike his voice--no inbetween. It's Jeri Ryan's voice that grates on my
ears--very nasal.

LOL, trust me, I have <vbg>. That's why I figured they went for the "Elvis"

LOL...I'm sure an actor in youth-obssessed Hollywood has NEVER lied on their

Geez, you must have seen him on a bad day (or after a bad/good?? night <vbg>).
If it's any consolation, I think many of the fans I have met online think he's
46, because he once told someone in a q/a that he was born on a
Thursday...leading to someone to look at what year that would be (some people
have too much time on their hands). However, considering RB's approach to
q/a's, he could have pulled that answer out of thin air...

GW has a really interesting face. Sometimes he looks so young and other times
so old. Have you seen the new Voyager promo pics where they are all in black?
GW looked very different in those.
I agree about RDM--he has that little boy quality that's always going to be
there. LOL, for some people that's really appealing...obviously, you and I
don't see it as an asset like a lot of people do.

I was floored when I found out how old Jennifer Lien was...unbelieveable! Part
of that was her deep voice coming from that petite body too.

So true, and it would be nice to see how that relationship has progressed from
those points. It will be fun to see the eps in sydication when they run them
in order...I would imagine a Neelix/Tuvok theme week would be too much to ask
for!

I can't argue with that, esp. over Tuvok's numbers. However, it sounds like
season 6 is more promising for Tuvok than Chakotay, so far...

I agree with you here too. They write very isolated characters. Chakotay is
only featured with B'Elanna or Janeway, and unfortunately for you, they seem to
want Tuvok only with Paris. That's one of the reasons I really liked
Juggernaut.

LOL...you really don't want me to answer this honestly do you??? I'd boot
Seven out the nearest airlock and divide her time between Tuvok, Neelix and
B'Elanna, and free all the rest of her Janeway time for Chakotay. (and that's
my polite answer <vbeg>)
He

I agree that they really screwed Tuvok this season. On the other hand, unless
he was with B'Elanna, or was in the goo crew, Chakotay was usually offering
Janeway advice that she did not take (making him look superfluous or stupid).
Yes, RB did get some good stuff with the Fight (don't faint..I very often like
surreal shows...Infinite Regress was on of my favs this year, not because of
Seven <gag> but because of the surreal ending with Tuvok) and with Timeless and
Extreme Risk.
I'm not sure that i would say that Chakotay was given any real character
development except in Nothing Human and Extreme Risk. However, I cannot argue
that Chakotay had less than Tuvok, nor would I disagree with you that TR would
bat anything he was given out of the ballpark. It's my analysis of RB that
would differ from yours (what a shock!).

LOL, not taken, since my analysis of RB would definitely be different than
yours!! But seriously, the writing for Tuvok would rarely make him look like
he did not understand something, or have the capability to do it, or that
Janeway would prefer Seven (who somehow did not assimilate knowledge of how to
speak or be polite, but knows everything everything else in the whole freaking
universe...sorry, in a bad mood this morning!). I sometimes think this is why
they opt NOT to write for Tuvok.

LOL, I'm in good company, since TR sighted both of them as 2 of his favorites
and examples of what he would consider good, traditional Trek shows in that
online interview someone posted the addy for here a while back.
I always think of you when I watch it though, since Tuvok's outmaneuvering of
Paris was so slick. I always laugh because had it been Paris who went to the
surface, I'm convinced Chakotay would have blown his head off (making you very
happy:-). It was Tuvok's distinctive manner of speech and calm rationalization
that convinced Chakotay of what was real. That was one of many things I liked
about it, that and the fact that Chakotay doesn't just "get over it" at the
end.
As for Waking Moments... well, that *does* have some redeeming
>qualities IMO... :-)
It certainly does, and it used a lot of people very well, and was a different
type of story.

No disagreement here, and if the spoilers for Equinox are true, Tuvok still
believes the Captain is always right..or at least knows when to quit before
Chakotay does.

I can see why. But it is sounding encouraging that there seem to be more
ensemble type eps ahead.

See, even more interesting discussion, lol, he's going to blow our minds...(not
that I really believe this will happen... I think it would have to be 3 full
Tuvok eps for you, and J/C for me, and I think Dan Quayle will be the next
president before that happens...)
Doreen

Me too, and since I'm the the same age, perhaps it's the perspective!

Makes perfect sense to me, and I fall into that same category of being
attracted to older men.
Maybe that's why the Brad Pitt's and Tom

I can't say the same thing about Brad Pitt, but yes, I'd prefer RB or TR to
either of them:-)

I agree with you here. The three you cited had a very good year, and so did
Paris. IMO, Tuvok vanished, Janeway, B'Elanna, and Chakotay regressed, and
Neelix stagnated.

LOL, more Harry, Seven, and the Doc? More Captain Proton? Hopefully, we can
be more optomistic and hope that they continue to show Chakotay and B'Elanna's
friendship, more intermingling of characters (like in Juggernaut), and more of
a move to emphasis on interaction between the crew.

LOL...the Caesar do!! I'm going to think that every time I look at Paris' hair
now (and I like it better that way on RDM...his hair in season 4 was worse than
KM's, IMO).
I thought "the Caesar do" was appropriate for fighting tho--much more likely
that his hair would be that way.
I think I like RB's hair best like he wore it Caretaker, or like he wears it
himself, rather than "the Elvis do" (as someone on my listserve coined it) that
they normally have Chakotay wear.
Doreen
I wouldn't say that.....
<thinks - cleavage>
I wouldn't have said that either.....

How did you like it in In the Flesh?
I thought he and 8472ette had really good chemistry.

True!
Ah, but shoulder to shoulder, we could conquer the world!

Russ does appear to have more to do, although one spoiler I read looks
like a rehash of "The Changeling" from TOS, where Uhuru's brain I
downloaded. Looks like they try the same thing with Tuvok. Maybe TPTB
can't download originality.

ROTFLMAO! I guess you did have a bad morning! But, that last line did
make me laugh.

From what I read Tuvok disagrees too, but as you say Chak doesn't know
when to stop, and apparently nearly ends up in the brig. Don't mess
with Mama Janeway .. .
