How does the ship class works? If let's say, the Enterprise-D was a Galaxy
class ship, does that mean that all Galaxy class ships look like the
Enterprise-D? (Like the one that was blown to pieces in an episode of DS-9).

If not, could the Prometheus be an Intrepid class ship? If all the class
describes is certain atrributes of the ship, aside from the separation
feature, the Prometheus is somewhat reminiscent of Voyager.

Any thoughts?

J.

In the Star Trek universe (copying traits from real-life), when a new class of
ship is built, the first model is called a prototype. It is used to test
experimental systems, ideas, etc.

To answer your quest, yes, all Galaxy class starships look like the
Enterprise-D, although modifications are not unknown to happen, but
nevertheless, they are the same configuration. For example, in "Star Trek
Generations," the Enterprise-B was an Excelsior class, yet it had distinctive
flaired details (this was so they could model damage on the side without
ruining the original Excelsior model). In the Voyager episode, the Prometheus
is a prototype new class of ship, so it is not an Intrepid class like the
Voyager.

Nope. Yes, all Galaxy-class ships look like the Enterprise-D. Since the
Prometheus doesn't look like Voyager, it's not the same class. Rather, the
Prometheus is a prototype for a new class, as shown by the NX in its
registry number. Presumably the Prometheus-class. I'm pretty sure a new
class is named after its first ship, its prototype. So the Defiant was the
start of the Defiant-class, (Those two ships in MIAB that looked like the
Defiant were other Defiant-class ships) as it was the prototype and the
first Defiant-class ship. And the first Galaxy-class ship was called the
U.S.S. Galaxy.

You were right in your first paragraph. All ships of the same class look,
act, feel the same. All galaxy-class starships look the same, and all
intrepid-class ships look the same. And if/when the prometheus class is
established, all prometheus-class ships will look the same.

Regarding Classes. Also, the USS Galaxy was featured in one episode of
ST:TNG, but it was destroyed the same episode.

The USS Galaxy was never seen. It is the USS Yamato which you are
referring to.

From what I can tell, like the Enterprise it splits into two seperate ships
but what makes it special is that both ships are controlled by the main
bridge. Am I wrong ?

Only in that the Prometheus separates into 3 ships, not 2. But you are
correct that all are controlled by the main bridge.

No, the Enterprise D splits into two and the drive section is controlled
from the Battle Bridge or Engineering. Not sure which one. But I know that
the Saucer section does not control the drive section when they are
separated.

It can be controlled by both since the whole ship can be controlled from
Engineering.
