So, a blast from the past..... I though it was time to once again review
the roster of leading characters and in a shameless bid to get a nice
juicy debate going....
Tom Paris.
Voyager's original bad boy. What is his appeal?
When I look at his character I am reminded of those irritating teenage
boys who rush around school in little cliques, over confident, and
brusque, inconsiderate and self absorbed and juvenile.
Tom is the ship's practical joker, and has seemingly become Neelix's
"partner" in crime. His friendship with Harry seems to be nothing more
than Harry's feeling of friendship and Tom's love of having someone to
play jokes on. There is a clear intention with Tom's character to
attempt to annoy each and every other crew member to what end I do not
yet understand. Even B'Elanna is not immune. The so-called "loving"
relationship that they have, is paper thin and as loving as the
relationship between a teenager and a pet, and probably as enduring. In
the early days before their relationship "blossomed" there was some
tension between the characters of a sexual or loving nature, since they
became a couple that tension has fizzled and inspite of the efforts on
the screen and by their fans no one can convince me that Tom has any
intention of commitment to B'Elanna, there is no evidence in his manner.
Tom Paris is the cheeky chappy of Voyager, the loveable rogue, except
he's not very loveable.
I'm not attracted by the character in the least, he is simply not the
sort of person I would associate with.
So, what *is* the appeal of Tom???? Is there one?

He's cute? <g>
I guess I have a love-hate relationship with Tom Paris these days. I used to
find him charming. These days, he's mostly just annoying. Though he does have
his moments, still.
I liked Tom best this season in "Pathfinder." The scene where he finally hears
from his Dad, and the toast he offers afterward. Could it be he's finally
growing up?
I also enjoyed the Paris-Kim scene in "Survival Instinct." Very much the frat
boy, but it seemed an honest mistake, basically harmless, and quite amusing.
Another Paris moment I liked: in "Fair Haven," when he persuades the Doc not to
bet against Harry. Because he's afraid it would hurt Harry's feelings. It's
such a small matter, yet Tom is concerned. A nice moment, and more convincing
than the "where's Harry?!!" scenery-chewing of "Collective" or the similar
scenery-chewing in "Muse."

They all have their moments, I just find that Toms are few and far
between and usually all but drowned out by his clutsy and immature or
juvenile behaviour.

I wish it could be, he'd be far more likeable. In fact I thought he was
*far* more mature and "grown up" in the first couple of seasons than he
is now.

But that's his *normal* behavior. It's on the rare occasion that he
displays the other side to his personality, so rarely in fact that I
don't believe that it's part of the personality.

Positively no appeal. I look at him and get this overwhelming

I can't disagree, but I still like him, for what he used to be, and what he

I didn't mind "Fair Haven" too much. "Spirit Folk" I despised, but "Fair
Haven" had its moments. I didn't like the main plot of Janeway and her
hololover, but I liked the other crew interaction scenes. Janeway and Chuckles
talking to each other like the old friends they must surely be by now. Seven
getting picked up by Seamus in the bar. Tuvok and Seven in the mess hall. The
arm-wrestling scene. The Tom and Harry show (including getting in yet another
barroom brawl).

I have seen a few earlier episodes where this pairing had potential, but the
writers blew it. I would have dropped him on his not-so-fine arse quicker
than a hot potato. B'Elanna needs way more of a man.

No, not that part. That part was lame. (And Tim acted it so convincingly it
made me queasy just watching.)
But I liked the hint of friendship that we saw between Tuvok and Seven. He
won't sit with Tom and Harry in the mess hall, but Seven feels free to sit down
at his table without even asking.

Hmm... the T-shirt sounds *very* pretty and the bikinis tell me it must
be very hot there. I hope you have the air-conditioning turned *way*

Of course not. And *very* soon you'll have another ring to join the one
you already have, and then a few short weeks from then another to join
that, matching one of my own.... Well, now I'm wearing a smile to match

Yep, I think that they are kindred spirits, a friendship that we've seen
in other episodes, I think it's one we should see more of.
I think I might shed some light on those things. a) Me, b) being married

YAY! I agree. Since the writers blew it, I think it's time that then
ended the charade and allowed both characters to move on. That way Harry
and B'Elanna can get together, and Tom can start competeing with
Chakotay for the attentions of Janeway, though that competition might be
a little slow, neither of them appears to be that keen on actually
participating in a relationship.

Ahhh.. yes, the late series Riker I hope, that gives me some
chance...<looks down at a "six pack" that's more like a 24 can case....

> Mic
> *puts on flamecoat*
No need for that, to need a flame retardant coat you need to say
something like....
Tom Paris is an immature jerk who treats B'Elanna with at best slight
interest and at worst total dis-interest. He deserves to be cleaning the
plasma conduits on deck 15 rather than sitting on the bridge. It is a
travesty that he get's his Lt pips back and Harry should hate his guts
for it. As far as his practical jokes are concerned, they are hurtful,
childish and unprofessional. Making Tom a mean little cuss with less
professionalism than my big toe and about as much maturity as your
average slice of processed cheese.
<grin>
OK, now *that* was trolling the parisites.
Yep, I think that they are kindred spirits, a friendship that we've seen
in other episodes, I think it's one we should see more of. <<
Ironically, in a 4th season interview, Garrett Wang said he thought they should
avoid too many Tuvok-Seven scenes. That the characters were so similar that
they would be boring together.
Maybe so, if we got a *lot* of Tuvok-Seven. But as it is, I can't imagine
Tuvok getting enough screen time to be boring. With anyone.
-- Arlie
*blush*
*smooch*
We love you too :)
There are times when I wish I lived in that part of the world ;-)
When Garret manages to turn in a season of consistently good
performances I'll apply more weight to his remarks. Until then his
rather strange views will be consigned to the trash, where they belong.

To all of the above:
MEGA-THUD!
When Garret manages to turn in a season of consistently good
performances I'll apply more weight to his remarks. <<
I think he has. I'm very impressed with him as an actor, especially these last
few years. Well, considering that he and Tim Russ are winning the "least
screen time" competition.
Not that it matters. You know what they say -- those who can, do, those who
can't criticise. <g> His acting skills, good or bad, don't negate his
opinion. Any more than yours or mine do.
>> Until then his
rather strange views will be consigned to the trash, where they belong. <<
I don't think his views are strange. He's got a point. Characters that are
too similar are boring as a pairing. Like Paris and Torres. And even Seven
and the Doc, quite frankly. That's not to say that they can't have some
interesting scenes together, but too much of it quickly grows tiresome.
I'd just love to get that opportunity to Tuvok and Seven....

Ta'! Ignorant child! You know nothing. ::fingernails dig deeper into Ta's
flesh, blood smearing on Empress' fingers:: Without me, All would be in chaos

::Ta's body convulses, every cell stretching and contracting in contortions of
pain, and streams of pure emotion--all emotion--shoot through Ta'::
[In the scream, Empress steals the remaining light in the room. It draws up
toward her, collecting on her body and seeping inside. It stirs up the
blackness dwelling inside of her, clouding her skin with pure blackness,
including the whites of her eyes; the only color seen, the spaces between her
cells, and the deeper blackness with amber lightning flashing in her pupils]
::Ta' then watches Empress' image and essence dissolve into the air and the

presence always felt, and scream always distantly heard. ..Ta', never in
