Well, I didn't watch DS9 when it first came on. I was a fan of TOS, but found

when DS9 came on, I barely noticed. (I did come back for Voyager, almost

I'm actually *more* interested in the new series, because they seem to be

I felt the same way about TNG during the first season or so, but
found it quite appealing after awhile. Now, as far as being my favorite ST
series it is a tie between TOS & TNG, with VOY a close second.
I never could get into DS9, however, as few of the characters had
much appeal to me. Kira was cute, and Odo slightly compelling, but
overall, it could never hold my interest for more than 20 minutes at a
time.

I enjoyed TOS. Watched TNG for a few episodes and it was okay but didn't
follow it religiously. DS9 was a total lost...it didn't come close to
having the magic of TOS in terms of interesting charracter development
and interactions. Also, there was just too many charracters to follow.

Aside from giving the chimps and chumps the chance to fuck up the pre-TOS
timeline, *what* opportunity do they have then that they wouldn't in a
post-Vger time period? Can there possibly be any doubt that TPTB will drag in
the Borg, holodecks, and all the other crutches they've gotten used to using?
Why do they need to go back to the not-quite-so-distant future to have the ship

A series set when the Federation is at peace certainly need not be boring.
There are things Out There *infinitely* more interesting than space battles.
Agreed. I didn't like NG or Voy at first, watching the first few eps
and turning it off, and then returning to them both in third season.
I'll watch because it's Trek, and I'll keep in mind that it takes a
while for cast members and writers to find their footing. Of all the
new series introduced to TV each year, I'm more inclined to give a
Trek show a watch than anything else.

Not me.
Voyager has really run Trek into the ground. The new series is supposed to
have a Vulcan science officer. There is supposed to be a lot of Vulcan
interaction. The Voyager writers couldn't write for Tuvok. So where are
the producers going to get writers for the new Vulcans. The only good thing
about going back in time is that there will be no holodecks; I am so sick of
those stories.
The new series as it is planned is too derivative of TOS. There are only
two female characters -- and the Asian one sounds like another Harry Kim.
Uhura will still be the only black female character in Trek -- what gives
with that casting? How can the producers be on their fifth series and omit
a black female cast member again?
Hehe - you know more than I do. I need to learn more about "berman and

mmm - how can they drag in holodecks and borg? Don't you think they will
find some other way of ticking you off. I really hadn't thought about it for
a while, but now that I reflect, I always wondered at what abig deal they
made of the holodeck, without ever getting too many good stories out of it.
I think that the holodeck character (name?) that was designed to "defeat
Data" was a good holodeck story. Also the Doctor has been interesting too.
Im still not sure one can qualify a long running piece of software as a life
form.

mmmm - but didnt that happen often enough on the original ST? Interesting
monsters (like the being that had it's individual cells take over human
beings) that ended up dying to some silly thing (same monsters exposed to
light died). I can thimk of a number of "monster" shows that ended with
destroying the monster.
You cant have a series of any type without eventually hitting some episodes
that will dissappoint somebody.

I agree. But I often got irritated at the original series that they would
"almost" start an instellar war, and never actually do it. I think that the
last two seasons of DS9 proved that one could take an interstallar war too
far. But there were several great episodes in the original series that did
involve war and near war.
Thanks for the interesting points to ponder. I will still watch the new
series, as there will, no doubt, be little else on worth watching.

I'll almost certainly watch it, too..... just another Trek slut.....
Too late! If what TrekWeb is reporting is true... It's already canon
that Spock was the first Vulcan in Starfleet. So, how can Archer have
a Vulcan first officer?
And the first ep deals with Starfleet meeting the Klingons for the
first time... Do we get TOS Klingons? Rumor has it, no. I'm bracing
for a repeat of the first two seasons of Kazons on Voyager, except
that we'll have seven years of retconned Klingons (TOS Klingons would
rape your grandmother and fart in airlocks; TNG Klingons wouldn't
because there is no "honor" in it).

But the Vulcan may be a part of the Vulcan Defense forces, and not a Star
Fleet Officer, who is serving aboard the Enterprise. For all we know, it's
not necessarily going to be a star fleet ship; the ship could still be
defined as a United Earth Ship, not an UFP ship.

I do kinda hope we'll see kick-ass just plain evil klingons. Let's have some
fun for a change & some good kick ass space battles.
If the ranks given in the rumors are any indication, the Vulcan in Series V
isn't in Starfleet (non-Starfleet type rank).
If the casting sheet is true (which I don't think it is) then Ensign
Sato will be the first non-white non-black female ever. It's a little
silly to argue that we haven't seen enough black women when we
haven't seen *any* females of other races yet. Since there are far
fewer women than men on Trek, they're still getting around to
hitting the major races with the women. It'll be at least another
show before we get a female cast member comparable to Bashir or
Chakotay. And you're forgetting Whoopi as Guinan; while she
wasn't a regular, she was considered important enough to be
included in a couple of the cast photos (as was Nurse Chapel).
Look at the point spread:
White men: Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scott, Chekov, Picard, Riker, Data,
Wesley, Barclay**, O'Brien, Odo, Quark, Paris, Doctor, Neelix
Non-white men: Sulu, LaForge, Worf, Sisko, Bashir, Jake, Chakotay,
Tuvok, Kim
White women: Rand**, Chapel**, Crusher, Troi, Yar**, Pulaski**,
Kira, J Dax, E Dax**, Janeway, Torres, Kes, Seven
Non-white women: Uhura, Guinan**, Ogawa**
Since a number of the characters were only in one season apiece or
were secondary characters but did appear with dialogue in at least
one movie (Rand, Chapel, Guinan, Ogawa, Barclay) for purposes of
tabulation I'm only counting each of the **'ed names above as a half-
point each. Chekov, Wesley, Kes, and Seven still count as full-point
characters, since they were each in multiple seasons.
White to non-white men - 15.5 : 9.0 - 63.3% white
White to non-white women - 10.5 : 2.0 - 84.0% white
So you're right in lamenting that the female characters we've seen are
more heavily white than the U.S. population, much less the world.
But we still need to see a woman who is non-white and non-black
as a regular cast member first.

I really don't think they would be able to do much else within

First face to face contact with the Romulans was in TOS's "Balance of
Terror," but they did fight a war 100 years prior, then made a peace treaty
via "subspace radio" without ever meeting each other. It would be fun to
have a war with an enemy that's unseen.
Don't know about the Klingons for sure, but when they were first introduced,
Kirk & company already knew a lot about them, so I would surmise that first
contact happened previously.
That was my understanding as well.... The pre-TOS series idea is dumb, and
TPTB will take a nuke to all of Trek's timeline in such a series.... If
they really do this, and if they start screwing up the future, I'm hoping
that its so bad that it gets cancelled and then declared non-cannon....

at least she's non-white. And when will we have a series where there
are more female regs than male ones?
Well, the Cochrane in TOS had been alone on a dead planet for 150 years with
only the Companion for, well, company... that kind of thing would change a
man <g>

First contact with the Klingons was about 50 years before TOS; no human saw
an actual Romulan until TOS, but the Romulan wars had taken place 100 years
earlier.
But remember the Cochrane from TOS had
taken off in his ship to die of old age in space. But the guardian found him,
saved his life and changed him into a young man again. So the older ST:First
Contact Cochrane is not that disparent.
The Cochran of TOS was an old man who went out into space to die and
was then captured and changed by the Companion...

I think that TOS was the first time that Starfleet had met both of
them face to face (actually seen what the other looked like). At
least with the Romulans that's the case ("Enterprise Incident"). I'm
not too sure about the Klingons, though (I haven't seen the Organian
ep. for a while).

Right.... Although, I'm going to step back and not blame the writers for

True again. Though I don't think Berman is the one responsible for

Now we know why Worf calls prune juice a warrior's drink!
"Metamorphosis." A sentient ionized cloud had fallen in love with him and
rejuvenated him.
Writers find that certain charachters work better than others and they
preffer writing for those charachters. Tuvok never worked but it wasn't
because he was Vulcan. A different Vulcan played by a good actress might
work quite well. Certainly the background and situations offers far more
potential than Tuvok as fascist security guy cum Janeway's lapdog.

If he *is* captain, I won't watch.

It was because the so-called writers were fucking incompetent hacks who only
barely qualified as organic matter, let alone human.....
<Troi> I sense...hostility, Captain. </Troi>
A lot of the episodes have been lame. I think they have good ideas, but they
always manage to ruin them somehow - usually with 1 or 2 details that don't
make sense or are inconsistent with the characters or the show.
And you're right - they have overdone the holodeck stories to death.
Remember in TNG, when they did the whole series of "dream" episodes - I
think they did one episode for each character. Talk about writer's block.
The only really memorable thing was Data's cellular peptide cake.
I was just watching Voyager last night, and I saw an episode that reminded
me of the original series. I don't know the name of the episode, but they
found a damaged robot floating in space, and Torres fixed him, and they
returned him to his ship (a silver ship full of silver robots). Along came a
gold ship full of gold robots, and the two started fighting. It turns out
that these things were built about 14,000 years earlier by 2 groups of
people who were at war with each other. They built the robots to do their
fighting for them, and when the people were almost totally wiped out, they
called a truce. The people tried recall the robots, telling them they had to
come back and be dismantled, but they had pre-programmed them all with the
following: 1) the enemy must be destroyed; 2) anyone who tries to destroy
you is your enemy. (That one was pretty cool.)

Because they didn'T even *bother* to try with him... just read their
interviews. The thought that there is a ninth character by the name of
Tuvok hasn't occurred to *any* of them.
That can't be, as in one episode an entire "Enterprise" class starship was
eaten by some big ameoba (Immunity Syndrom) and it's ENTIRE CRUE were
Vulcans (early Star Fleet segregation - seperate but equeal).
