Twig, depends where you live and where you go, but for a shot (30mls) $3-$6
($AUST) depending on where you are. Also note that's normal tequila, you want
something fancy (worm and all) you could be looking at $8.

Nathan and Cooper had Beer. Being the simple man that he is (and I can
say that with no fear of retaliation b/c I come from a small town too!)
Nathan ordered the drinks. Besides I guess he thought not to over do it
on Cooper's first drink. :)

Say, Twig, you plannin' a big night out soon or somethin'?<g> <g>
It's not actually a worm, it's a grub (like a small caterpillar) normally about
4cms long ... the person with the last shot has to eat the grub as well. I
can't (off the top of my head) remember the brand name ... but it's in a tall,
yellow, square type bottle (I can pick it of the shelf in an instant). As for
colour well usually it's clear (kinda like vodka and leave good legs on the
side of the glass ... indicating the viscosity of the liquid) And usually if
you are the successful grub eater you don't pay for the drink.

Actually, I believe Nathan and Cooper were doing shots of Tequila with

Usually (the way I know it), it's clear. Could be seen as if it's water.
Only tastes slightly differently ;). Had only one shot of tequila in my life,

Well, like you Red Stinks, it is different for each Chig. Personally, I
don't drink alcohol. I do occasionally use it when cooking though. I
tried a small sip of something alcoholic a number of years back, and if I
hadn't been in a *very* crowded restaurant, I would have spit it out. (it
wasn't my drink so I couldn't put it back in the glass) UGH! BLEACK!

Larry Hunter's Guide to Tequila
Tequila has long been misunderstood by Norte Americanos, and ignored by
most folks outside of the Americas. Nevertheless, Tequila is made with
great pride by many Mexican producers, and some of these spirits rival
the finest brandies and whiskys in finese and depth.
Like those other spirits, tequila is distilled. Brandies are distilled
from fruit, whiskys from grain -- tequila is distilled from cactus.
Specifically, it is distilled from the Agave cactus, which is related to
the Yucca and the 100-year plant. Agave takes a long time to mature.
These plants are harvested generally after 7 years, although some of the
best tequilas use plants that are 20 or more years old.
When harvested, the Agave is first stripped of its leaves. Then the
central core, called a pina (tilde over the n, pronounced pin-ya), is
fermented. The result of this fermentation is a low alcohol liquid
called pulque, which is then distilled. Pulque is analogous to wine
(which is distilled into brandy) or beer (which is distilled into
whisky), and is sometimes drunk on its own in Mexico. The pulque is
then distilled into tequila.
The liquor distilled from the Agave plant goes under the generic name of
Mescal. Mescals distilled in the Mexican state of Jalisco are called
Tequila, just as Cognacs are brandies from that French province, or
Scotch is whisky from Scotland. There are a few traditional differences
between tequilas and other mescals. Non-tequila mescals are often made
from a larger, faster growing Agave, which can be harvested younger.
Also, the infamous worm in the bottle is associated with non-tequila
mescals.
Tequila is regulated by the DGN, a Mexican government agency. In order
to be certified as tequila (or as mescal) a bottled liquor must contain
at least 51% Agave distillate. The rest is usually cheap corn liquor or
some other "neutral" spirit. Better tequilas are labelled "100% Agave"
or, sometimes, "100% Blue Agave". [Agave plants are mostly blue. Some
have white stripes through the middle of the leaves, and are called
"verigated."]
In addition to the percentage of Agave distillate, tequilas differ in
the amount of aging they receive. Liquor that has been barrel aged for
at least 6 months can be called "reposado" (rested); liquor that has
been aged at least 2 years can carry the designation "Anejo" (old).
The labelling requirements of the DGN are quite specific. If a tequila
or mescal does not say "100% Agave" on it, it is almost certainly not.
Gold tequilas not labelled as "reposado" are most often just tinted with
food coloring.
There are many, many delicious small distribution tequilas out there.
Strangely enough, outside of Jalisco and Mexico City, they can be hard
to find in Mexico. Sauza is the big national brand in Mexico, and
Cuervo is the largest (by far) international brand. The sale of small
distribution tequilas, although still tiny, has been growing in the US
for several years now, and availability is better than it has ever been.
Below is my personal set of recommendations, roughly in order of
preference. All listed liquors are 100% Agave tequilas unless otherwise
noted.
*** Tequilas to seek out
El Tesoro de Don Felipe, Muy Anejo. Wonderful aroma, almost perfume.
Best price I've seen is $31.99 at Calvert Woodley in DC. My current
choice for drinking (as opposed to margarita) tequila. Typical cost is
$34. Their "Plata" (silver) is typically $28.
Patron Anejo. Aged in French Oak barrels, light in color, refined but
intense flavors. Best price I've seen is $28.99 at NYC's Warehouse Wine
& Spirits. More typical price is about $40. The Patron Silver (unaged)
is typically just a few dollars cheaper, and not quite as wonderful.
Jorongo Supremo. Unlike the light, etherial tequilas above, this one is
smooth and rich. If El Tesoro and Patron are the Cognacs of the tequila
world, Jorongo is the single malt scotch. Typically about $36.
Heradura Anejo. Largest distribution of the top brands. It changed in
early 1994, getting a new label (dark brown instead of beige) and the
liquor is also darker in color. There is a slight difference in taste
as well, and I don't like it quite as much as the old style. I used to
rank it with Patron & El Tesoro, and now I rank it slightly below. The
Heradura Silver (typically $22, best $18) is a good margarita tequila,
although somewhat pricier than Sauza Hornitos (See below).
Chinaco (Green label). I haven't seen one of these in a long time. I
recall it being very good, though, so find a bottle and send a report.
Centinela Anejo. Not quite in the Patron/El Tesoro league, but at $21
(best) to $24 (typical) a real bargain. Their Blanco (unaged) is
typically $19 (I prefer the cheaper Hornitos, see below), and the
reposado is $21; go for the anejo here.
Sauza Hornitos. Unaged, but delicious tequila. My current choice as
best tequila deal. At $12 (best) to $17 (typical), it's a steal. In
Mexico, it was widely available for about $12 a litre (not 750ml)! I
use this in my margaritas. Sauza is widely available in the US. Note
carefully that there are many different Sauza varieties, and this is the
only one I recommend. Look for the green label.
Real Hacienda Anejo. At $36 (typical), a little too pricey given the
competition. Still very good, however. Their $18 (typical) silver or
$21 (typical) reposado are much better deals.
El Viejito Anejo. Like the Real Hacienda, at $33 (typical) the El
Viejito costs too much for what it is. However, an nice tequila if
nothing else is available.
The cheapest 100% Agave tequila you can find. Anything under $15/bottle
is probably a good deal.
*** Tequilas to avoid
Cuervo. All of them. They add sugar, and, I suspect, artificial
flavoring to their liquor. I'd almost always rather have a generic
cheap unknown 51% tequila than Cuervo. Cuervo 1800 adds insult to
injury by typically costing more than $25 for a mediocre, blended
liquor. They have now come out with a "traditional" tequila which is
(finally!) 100% Agave. The price has been coming down from an
outrageous introductory rate. I've seen it as low as $17. Although it
is perfectly drinkable tequila, I find that it has very little character
of its own. Perhaps it is filtered before being bottled? I much prefer
Hornitos (which is also cheaper), but if you have to drink Cuervo, find
the "Traditional."
Porfidio Anejo. In a very pretty bottle, but nearly tasteless. Perhaps
this is also filtered before being bottled? I think of it as tequila
flavored vodka, and won't spend $35 (typical) on it again.
Sauza Tres Generationes. Despite being Sauza's top of the line ($30
typical) it is not labelled 100% Agave, and I am suspicious that it
might not be. I don't like it nearly as much as the half-the-price
Hornitos. The Commemorativo (at $25 typically) is also not as good in my
opinion as the Hornitos.
*** Buying tequila at a bar:
First, get a designated driver or the taxi phone number. :-) Then,
figure out how to avoid drinking the Cuervo. Confronted with a limited
choice, I'd for the most part rather drink the generic rail tequila than
Cuervo. In fact, at one of my favorite local dives, the rail tequila is
Dos Reales, which is perfectly drinkable stuff, and $1/shot less than
the Cuervo. Ah, a little justice!
*** Final note:
Sipping tequila (even good tequila) is likely to get you in trouble with
the drinking gods. Tequila is meant for shots. In tall, thin, 25ml
shot glasses if you ask me. And with decent tequila, limes and
especially salt are optional. On the other hand, a meaningful toast is
obligatory with every shot. Con Mucho Gusto!

The most potent liquor available is Everclear - 190 proof or 90%
alcohol. It is only good for 1 thing. Tho I had some aquavita from Iceland
called "Black Death" was pretty nasty stuff!
Generally I prefer a good microbrew or Cabernet Sauvignons or Zinfandel
(RED..not that white junk) from California. If I'm going to drink the hard
stuff, I like a nice single malt Scotch to sip. Marines play hard because
they work hard. BTW 58th's drinking was very minimal compared to what

In that case you would want something rather plain and in a straight shot
