Probably something satanic. Goats always lead to some sort of satanic ritual.

Maybe you should clean out your ears. It was expressly stated that goats are
kept around as "company" for the horses.

Tony noticed the goat earlier in the episode and was admonished not to go near
it because it "bucks" or something to that effect. My guess is he was happy to
see it come in peacefully. I liked that last scene.

The goat is there to provide companionship to the horse. Tony smiled
because the goat and the horse gave him some vendication to find meaning in
the hopeless despair of his existance. I think.

Oh me too! Great, great scene! Loved the cowboy music w/ it too!

I remember when my son was really little taking him to a petting zoo near
our house. There was a goat pen. I pushed his stroller inside and the goats
came up and surrounded us. There was spit up formula stains and stuff on the
stroller and the goats began sniffing, then licking the stains, and then
fighting over them. Disgusting! I forgot there was a cookie in the pocket of
my jacket and a big goat caught the scent and tried stuffing its nose in the
pocket. He started pushing against me really hard w/ his head.

I decided it was time to make a fast getaway, but it was really tough
pushing the stroller over the mound of wood chips lining the pen and the
goats swirled around us in a frenzy and I couldn't get the gate open w/o
releasing the goats. I started shouting for help and the one goat that
wanted the cookie began butting his head into my leg. I thought we'd be
killed by a herd of crazed goats, LOL!

Luckily, some kid who worked there ran up and rescued us. The next time we
came by, the pen was closed off for entry and visitors were only allowed to
pet the goats through the wire fence.

I liked the scene w/ Tony and the horse and the goat. But I couldn't help
but think of my visit to the petting zoo years ago, when my baby and I were
almost devoured by goats. They can be nasty critters.

As it was said earlier in the show, at a racetrack, there are often other
animals around to keep the horses company.

My guess was that the goat came in to keep the horse company as the goat
probably knew the horse was sick. Tony smiled because animals were showing
more empathy than humans. (Junior-Bobby)

Heh, heh. That brought back petting zoo memories. One of the goats tried to chew
the button off my brand new WHITE sweater -- they're persistent little fuckers! I
was also followed across an entire zoo by a turkey who either wanted to have sex
with me or fight with me (due to my colorful autumn coat, no doubt) -- it kept
snorting and spreading it's tailfeathers. It became rather frightening when we
went into a long aviary and disovered the turkey was waiting for us on the other
side -- YIKES! One of the "best lines" of my life came from my then 6-yr-old:
"Mommy, that turkey's FOLLOWING us!"

BTW, Kim, does Memorex ring a bell for you (or bust a glass, as the case may be)?

Did you also notice that that "cowboy music" was the song playing in that old
movie Tony was watching during the first episode of this season? Great
continuity there. I think that the underlying theme here is that Tony is
starting to wish for a less complicated, simple life.

No, I didn't make the connection w/ the song, but great pick-up, Matt! And

I agree w/ you too on the symbolism of the scene, and the music. There was
something comforting to Tony being in the stall w/ the sick horse, Tony
keeping vigil to see her through and the goat wandering in for company. This
in contrast to the freeze-out back at home, w/ the best he can do seemingly
never enough to get him back in w/ Carm.

The cowboy tune is perfect here, IMO...visualize the cowboy on the trial out
on the vast prairie, far from home, w/ only his rifle/gun and horse for
companions.

Beautiful stuff.

I think so. Notice that Tony didn't light up
his cigar when it seemed to upset the horse?
Does he show that kind of concern for his
wife?

Tony was the only one, besides Lois, who
touched the horse. And he's the only one who
had a deep visceral appreciation for her,
beyond her value as an investment or a racer.

And he didn't have to sit there with a sick
horse (in a manger!), it gave him a moment of
happiness though. And the goat didn't butt
him, adding to Tony's sense of peace.

Remember who else had this attachment to
animals?

Gloria.

Tony likes animals for the same reason I do: they don't have ulterior motives.
They are very upfront about what they want--there is no plotting or conniving.
And the same can't be said of humans, even those closest to us. We can't help
it...but the animals, they are damn close to being "pure."
Mytwo cents anyway...

A common putdown in italian and sicilian circles is a euphamism for,
royughly speaking, "the one with horns" or "the goat."

So a man with "horns" put on his head has an unfaithful wife. He is
"the goat."

Maybe that's it.

Totally different lyric this time.

In the previous Dino song, he was singing "As the sun slowly sinks in the
west..." as Christopher nodded off to junk, in a clever overlap of the
audio from the next scene, as Tony watches the old western on TV.

also note they only showed Dean himself on the tube, playing guitar &
singing, and this song had both Dean & Ricky Nelson duetting.

so I suspect it's a different Dean Martin cowboy tune, but it is meant to
refer to the earlier scene...

For definitive analysis of the catalog, I will defer to Dino completists;-)

I think it's a bit of forshadowing and symbolism.
Think about it. Tony is thinking of going on the lamb and he could consider
this a sign that his decision is the right one.
Tony is feeling lost and confused right now about what to do and he could be
subconciously looking for some kind of confirmation either way to get him to
take a certain path. The appearance of the lamb therefore could be the
"signpost" that will convince him that he should take the path of running.
That's what I though, anyway.

Not a lamb, it's a goat. BTW, people don't go "on the lamb", they go "on
the lam". "on the lamb" is what lonely shepherds do:-)

LOL! I was going to say the same. Also, since when is Tony thinking of going
on the lam? He hasn't thought about that since the Happy Traveler ep, has
he?

Is that something a Judas Priest would have?

Goat, not lamb, however, I agree with the "path" assertion. Johnny and Tony
take two different paths in response to Ralphie's divisive tactics. Johnny
isn't influenced by Ralph's earning potential and remains committed to his
wife, even though she's deceived him. The money influences Tony, though, and
he runs straight from Carm's power play at home into Ralphie's power play at
work. Although Carm has yet to deceive him, Tony refuses to commit to the
trust fund because the divorce clause makes it seem risky. Instead, he
commits to Ralph, putting his faith in the most cunning and deceitful of
them all!

Well, even the vet who wouldn't doctor to the poor beast without some
cashola.

But this is yet ANOTHER counter to those naysayers who believe the
writers have too-short memories. This is clearly a recall of the
scene from Pax Soprana where Tony is ranting to Hesh that he envies
the horse's lifestyle--no pressures, no headaches, no Prozac. At that
point, he was dealing with the heaviness of the post-Jackie power
transition and making Jun the "lightning rod." Now, a few years later,
here he is at the top but he's still fascinated with the horse's
carefree lifestyle.

But when Tony arrived with the cash, the vet had already given the horse
a shot & she was resting.

"WIN, or it's the glue factory for you!" is a carefree lifestyle? No thanks.
