Sorry for the wrong answer here. You had asked that question in the previous
thread, so I thought you were asking who Melfi's doctor was. Dr. Melfi is
portrayed by Lorraine "I'm bankrupt" Bracco. Peter Bogdanovich plays her
psychiatrist.

Sopranos Shrink Lorraine Bracco Avoids Trial Over Unpaid Taxes
White Plains, New York, Feb. 6 (Bloomberg)
-- Actress Lorraine Bracco, who plays therapist Dr. Jennifer Melfi on ``The
Sopranos,'' is apparently close to settling her dispute with the U.S. Internal
Revenue Service, which claims she owes $518,000 in unpaid federal income taxes,
her lawyer said.
In her filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in June 1999, Bracco said
the IRS was seeking back taxes for 1991, 1992, and 1995. A trial was scheduled
for Wednesday in White Plains, but it has been put off, a court official said
today.
``We've been told it's been settled,'' Lisa O'Shea, a clerk for U.S. Bankruptcy
Judge Adlai S. Hardin Jr., said. ``As far as we know, it's not going forward.''
Bracco's attorney, Thomas Califano, said he had reached an apparent agreement
with the U.S. Attorney's Office in Manhattan.
``I think we have it resolved,'' Califano said, though he would not discuss the
specifics. ``We're still hammering out some details.''
Bracco contends that her bankruptcy filing negated the tax liability, but the
government disagreed, arguing in a civil petition that she willfully evaded the
taxes. Califano said he had ``pretty much disputed everything the government
put forward,'' calling it ``just plain nonsense.''
A spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office, Marvin Smilon, declined to comment.
Bracco had also claimed in her Chapter 11 filing that she owed $500,000 in
legal bills for the seven-year custody battle she waged with actor Harvey
Keitel over the couple's daughter.
Bracco won an Academy Award nomination for her portrayal of mobster Henry
Hill's wife in the Martin Scorcese film ``Goodfellas,'' and she has won
critical acclaim for her work on HBO's ``The Sopranos.'' She married actor
Edward James Olmos in 1997.
