Here's my bid: Homicide: LIfe on the Street.
As a whole, this series clobbers The Sopranos. I can no longer sustain
a "well the Sopranos is still the best thing on tv" defense.
The last season of Homicide without Andre Braugher was as bad as
Sopranos season 6, if not worse. But they made up for it with the
reunion movie where G ran for mayor and got shot.
You saying that 5 was the same as 4 except for the number? It's about right
anyway :-)
<Granted, when The Sopranos seasons 1, 2, and 3 were airing, no tv show
in history could compete with it. Now factor in seasons 4, 5, and 6 and
tell me truthfully that some other tv series AS A WHOLE isn't better
then The Sopranos.
Here's my bid: Homicide: LIfe on the Street.

With deepest regret, and I never, ever thought this day would come, I
have to say that I agree with you about the Sopranos, de. It's to the
point that no matter what Chase pulls out of his ass for the last
episodes, nothing can undo the damage that has already been done in
seasons 4,5 and 6. The first 3 seasons were glorious and we were on a
euphoric high, and I could not wait for Sunday night. I found myself
even thinking about the episodes in between, something I have rarely
done in my life. Then I found ATS, and we all obsessed together.
Then came Season 4...we were getting a baaaaadddd feeeling, but for a
long time, even into Season 6, many of us maintained some level of hope
that something more was coming that would redeem the whole thing. We
were just jerking off.
I'll watch the final episodes, just for the sake of closure, to find out
how things ended. Kind of like going to the funeral of a good friend who
died of a long, slow, painful disease. For those who are going to post
and say, "if you don't enjoy the program, don't watch"...go fuck
yourselves in advance. I'll watch if I want.
"Homicide: Life on the Street" gets my vote, too. Sheer ectstacy and
sheer agony. Brlliant writing. Compelling characters. I never saw an
episode, in all those years, in which I was disappointed. Ever. I
laughed out loud . I sobbed gut- wrenching sobs. I really cared about
the characters, the victims, the stories. I couldn't wait for the
episodes, and watched the tapes in between. To this day, I still think
of "Homicide" when I see Munch on "Law and Order:SVU"..
WHY, in God's name, has Andre Braugher not been able to find any decent
ongoing work since he left "Homicide"...the man is a gifted, brilliant
actor. He pops up occasionally, had a failed series or two, but WTF???
Sanford & Son is better TV than S4, 5 and S6.
Six Feet Under was very yummy.
Livia! I'm comin' to join ya!

I agree.
If you haven't read it already, you should pick up a copy of David
Simon's "Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets", amazon.com listing at
http://tinyurl.com/hk49b , the book the TV show was based on.
Grittiest, truest-sounding police book I've ever read. Most amazon.com
reviewers loved it too.
Plus, at only $6.99 for 640 pages, i'ts cheaper on a per-page basis than
The Masconi's !! But i'ts not a Novel, i'ts Journalism !!
Is David Simon your pen name?
There wasn't one character on that show that I disliked, except for
that douchebag Falzone. G was the best, he held that crew together,
and he didn't turn into a pussy-fag like Tony Sopranos had done this
past season. I just watched the episode where G got turned down for
promotion to the jagoff Gafferty. Brilliant editing as Gafferty is
busting balls in his speech to the troops, with cuts to G in the locker
room smashing shit up as he agonizes getting passed over by his nemesis.
S4 5 and especially 6 are making me think S1 and 2 were a fluke.
2. You cannot reach David Simon Jr. at the email adress provided because
it
is the email adress that I have set up to promote David Simon Jr.'s new
Novel!
3. If you find any errors in spelling in these promotions for David
Simon
Jr.'s epic Novel, then they are errors on my part and not
MR. Simon's!
(David Simon Jr. asked me to make that very clear and then stated that
his
newest Novel was run through a spell checker with the
newest updated version of Microsoft Word 14 time's!
Therefore, there should not be too many error's in the Novel! If there
is
error's in the Novel, then disregard them and drive on to the end of the
story with out crucifying the Author because this Novel has one of the
greatest story lines I have ever read, or I would not be helping David
Simon
Jr. promote his new Novel to start with!)
4. Please have some taste, class, and respect for the Author David
Simon
Jr.'s new Novel and do not email me with comments that are derogitory!
Like
I said this is one of the best feel good Novel's you will ever read!
That
means you people who like to rain on people's parade, or try to bring
people
down to your level of dispair, because I, nor Mr. Simon, do not want to
hear your ruthless gestures!

3 good seasons, 3 bad seasons. Season 7 will be the penalty spot-kick
to decide the ultimate decision on this show.
I didn't like how in the last season they had G's fanook son join the
Homicide dept. The actor who played him was kind of a fancy lad, if
you know what I mean. Him and Falzone were the focus of the show, and
it sucked.
I haven't watched the show in a while. I forgot how much I loved to
hate that prick Gaffney.
Did you ever see that reunion movie they made after the show got
canceled? Every character came back, including the dead ones. It was
a much better epitaph for the show than that last season.
Yes I saw the movie and it was the best finale to any show ever. Most
show finales end on a happy note everything's resolved thing. Homicide
ended on a massive downer emotionally. The double-whammy (Bayliss gets
arrested by Pembleton, and G dies.) The surreal death scene with
Felton and Crosseti at the end was worth an Emmy itself.
I haven't seen Homicide for years. I may go back to the beginning and pick
them up on DVD though. Unfortunately, we don't get HBO channel here -
although I believ the HBO DVD sets are cheaper here as a result? New ones
normally cost about £35.

I loved it when they're in that afterlife playing cards and G says
"There's another seat at the table", and Felton leans forward and says
"He'll be along soon", implying that Bayliss will be eating his own
gun shortly. Just awesome.
The guy who played Lewis directs a lot of stuff now, including a bunch
of episodes of "The Shield", another great show that may be surpassing
the Sopranos in terms of overall quality. They just finished the 5th
season, and the 90 minute season finale was one of the best episodes
of television I've ever seen.
Of the four women detectives, I only liked the redhead. The other three
were just there for decoration, and the last two were terrible
actresses.
Melissa Leo....yeah she was a great actress...her character was a good
detective , a tortured soul, and was one of the guys. Which made for
some interesting plot lines. The other female detectives were so
unmemorable, to me anyway, I can't even see their faces in my mind.

Oh GAWD...I love, love, love this program. So dark, so twisted,
excellent drama, great writing, and a good blend of their professional
and personal lives. I have a new episode on Tivo right now that I am
getting ready to watch..thanks for reminding me!!!
/racing off to watch/
I'll agree with that. The Wire is excellent. Although, I thought
Season 2 got a little sloppy, they were right back on track in Season
3. 4 starts in a few weeks. Season 1 is currently On Demand where I
live and it's great!
They don't actually show it here in the UK - unless you have satelite. I
have bought the box sets though - we're a little behind. Season 3 is out
next month on DVD so will be buying that and watching it for the first
time....

I would agree on H:LOTS. However, the series kind of took a dump in
the seventh and final season. It was almost anticlimatic, especially
given the absolutely great two-part season finale in Season 6, "Fallen
Heroes." That episode closed a three-season story arc with the Mahoney
drug clan. Junior Bunk grabs a gun and shoots up the squad room in the
first part, while in the second part the remnants of the Mahoney clan
gets taken down. Kellerman quits in disgrace, and Pembleton quits in
disgust after having to investigate and implicate one of their own.
H:LOTS had so many great characters -- Giardello, Munch, Meldrick
Lewis, Pembleton (a bit of an overacter), cranky Bolander, etc. Plus,
there were some great guest stars -- Steve Buscemi as a gun nut loner
(big stretch), Robin Williams, Steve Allen, even Jay Leno. They played
real characters, not this cameo BS like The Sopranos has done lately,
especially with the executive cardgames and that whole piece-of-shit
Ben Kingsley episode.
