Artie is the only one of Tony's close friends who is not a mobster. He's the
only one who doesn't have to live with the constant fear of getting whacked
by another mobster. I don't remember how Johnny went, but Pussy, Ralphie,
Mickey, etc, all of them had violent ends at the hands of other mobsters who
had to make the same decision that Tony was faced with; killing one of their
own. Artie is probably the only close friend Tony has that he doesn't have
to worry about the prospect of killing at some point.
The coach mentioned Artie, too -- and not in a nice way.

Johnny Boy died from emphysema brought on by too much smoking (and/or too
much Livia).

BZZZT! Wrong! no soup for you.
Although Tony is confused about why Artie is in the dream, his
subconscious is warning him that his lusting after Charmaine may be
hazardous to Artie's health.
that is, if Artie finds out Tony is shtupping his sort of ex, than his
own mausculine sense of outrage would have him gunning for Tony (like
the time Livia told him T had torched Vesuvio's) & Tony might just snap
him like a pretzel in reponse.
And contrary to what the other poster had written, not all the dead
mobsters in the car died violently: Gigi went out on the crapper,
straining to shit while constipated; Johnny Boy caught emphysema, and of
course Carmine (not in the car, but the MC of the whole dream) died of a
stroke in old age.
It's the cumulative dread of all these deaths weighing on him that is
depressing. He loses teeth in the dream like he loses "family" members
in everyday business.

Dude was quoting a line from "Goodfellas", John.
Gigi was in the dream too, but he just crapped himself to death.
Is Charmaine Artie's ex-wife? She is the hottest bird on Sopranos right now
She's Matt Bevalacqua's mother

then no soup for me , either!;-)
Actually, I'm more of a G1 & G2 guy than a Goodfellas fan, though I know
it's heresy to many here. Chase himself has siad it's his "Koran", but
I think he's exceeded it.
