If I was Finn (realistically that is) I would've straight out told meadow to
"shut the fuck up and listen to me for two minutes before running your
mouth", then calmly went on to explain "Look I just saw a wise guy blowing
the low rent security guard at the construction site and later on in the day
he totally tried to intimidate me and stuff. I'm scared out of my fucking
mind. And I don't wanna hear shit about how you don't think these guys
aren't like that, I don't wanna hear your denial and I don't even want you
thinking for one second this can somehow be flipped over about your
feelings. Your dad pulled strings, anyone who can read a paper know's who
your dad is, in fact I've never in all my years seen so many mafioso
stereotype guys in one place just SITTING AROUND DOING SHIT AND MAKING
MONEY!!!! Vito is gonna have me whacked unless you and I can figure out what
to do about it. If you don't respect what I saw with my own eyes then I am
gonna have to leave you right now because if I stay and we don't figure out
a means of resolving this conflict then I'm dead"...all the while I'm saying
this I'd prolly be shaking like a leaf knowing my time is almost up. and
knowing meadow she'd slip into denial mode and switch it around to "why
don't you wanna be with me" or something.
Having said that, I beleive it's a good play for Finn to propose to Meadow,
that does make him untouchable. Buuuuut wait, Only Meadow knows about Vito
blowing the guy and as we've seen Meadow like her mom loves to live in
denial. Finn is still whackable if Vito makes it look like an accident.
I think Finn should be one humble and word choosy mofo and approach Tony S.
doing a whole "I'm scared and I don't know what to do about this thing
that's developed" . but we know that won't happen.
All in all good ep. It got me out of lurking lol.
Great. NOW GO GET YOUR FUCKIN' SHINE BOX!!!!!!!!!!

Cutting some here just for space sake, but you make some quite valid points.
I think all of this would be the expected response of Finn -- IF I was
convinced he really knows and understands all of what you go on to
outline...i.e., that his girlfriend's father is a wiseguy, not just a
business man w/ some connections.
Do we know for a fact Meadow has leveled w/ Finn 100% about who her father
is? I think probably not. We've seen how Meadow has been cultured to cover
dutifully for the "life" -- to hide it from outsiders and make excuses to
legitimize what outsiders see and do when they get close so it sounds
perfectly legit. She did this even last night...when Finn confronted her
about Jackie's murder, she covered what happened by putting forth the canned
party line about it being black drug dealers, and we know she knows the
truth. She was at odds with Tony for months over it. But, like her mother,
she's conditioned enough by training to incorporate the lies and excuses
that regularly cover for her father's life as a criminal -- to swallow down
what surges up from time to time as unpalatable and quickly adapt to the
story dictated to them (i.e., someone is in the "witness protection program"
when you know he sleeps w/ the fishes).
If Meadow had been straight with Finn about who her father is, I don't see
why she would've come up w/ the cover story about Jackie's death. When she
came up w/ that, I figured right away she's never told him the real story of
any of it.
As far as Finn knows, Tony's connections are in the business community. The
guys at the construction site where Tony got him the job can be a little
rough, and some of them get away w/ loafing because they have some influence
w/ the site bosses. The beating Finn witnessed was pretty extreme and turned
his stomach, not to mention scaring the crap out of him. That and other
things he's seen began to raise red flags and bring up certain questions in
his mind. But Meadow insists he's exaggerating and overdramatizing what he
witnesses, and he has reason to think she knows what she's talking about.
Plus, he naturally believes she wouldn't lie to him about something like
this and maybe put him in danger. He's allowing himself to be reassured by
her and convinces himself he's reading into what he's seeing as more than is
really there.
I think the mind has a natural tendency too as a psychological defense to
minimize danger and the gravity of a situation until it becomes too blatant
to ignore or deny. This is what leads often to people taking more risks than
they should in situations that present uncertain conditions, and I think
this is especially true of young people who haven't yet gained the life
experience to fully grasp how vulnerable any of us can be, or to trust the
signals they read.
This is why I think Finn really may not know what Meadow's family is, and he
allowed himself to be convinced by her that sticking around would be ok for
him, and not the terrifying danger he first perceived after the Vito
confrontation.
Knowing what I know about Vito and his ilk, if I was Finn, I would pick up
what I could grab quick and stuff in a bag and put myself on the first plane
back to LA, goodbye Meadow. But Finn doesn't know what we know...he knows
only what he's been allowed to see, and all of that is filtered through
Meadow's deliberate campaign of disinformation. From that vantage, I could
believe that he'd hesitate and take time to think before giving in to the
very real danger signals he saw.
> Having said that, I beleive it's a good play for Finn to propose to
Meadow,
> that does make him untouchable.
I couldn't say for sure if the proposal came out of Finn's conclusion that
the best way to keep himself safe was to ally himself with Meadow's family
officially, or if it was a placating response to her hysteria over her
perception of him abandoning her.
> Buuuuut wait, Only Meadow knows about Vito
> blowing the guy and as we've seen Meadow like her mom loves to live in

If it was only some criminal act Finn witnessed (like the assault on the
crew member) or exchange of stolen goods, etc., I'd say Finn was safely "off
limits" as Tony's future son-in-law. But witnessing a made man blowing
another guy...I'd say that's a secret a man like Vito could not allow to go
unchecked. I'm very worried for Finn, and yes, I think Finn could meet up
with some kind of unfortunate "accident".

Anything that coaxes intelligent commentary out of lurkdom is a good thing
in my book! Glad to find your post, Raven. : )

I'll second that - even if I don't generally contribute to it. ;o)
I did not know that we knew Meadow knew it was Tony behind Jackie Jr's
demise - I remember her friend telling her it was some fat fuck in
see-through socks but I always thought she was in denial and didn't believe
it.
So, if that's the case, do we think she knows the fat fuck in see-through
socks was Vito? I guess I can't believe she knows that or she would have
taken Finn/Phinn's concerns a lot more seriously...surely she wouldn't want
to lose 2 loves to Vito....and even if she kept up the charade for
Phinn/Finn, I think they would have made it obvious that she was worried.
OR maybe they wouldn't. They do love to mess with us viewers.
G.
However, if I was Finn, I would have gone back that very night to
LA. He was thinking of breaking up with her anyway. You can tell
he's not completely into her. All that flirting with the Hispanic
girl, I was expecting him to cheat, but thankfully he's not that
stupid. He panicked when he proposed to Meadow. He doesn't love her.
How could he sincerely ask for her hand right after all of her
whining (it was unbearable!)? And why would he want to dig himself
deeper into a mafia family? The guy is rightfully fearing for his
life, and proposing was a strategic move. I personally think it was
the wrong one, though.
> But Finn doesn't know what we know...he knows
> only what he's been allowed to see,
I don't agree. Tony Soprano is supposed to be a well known reputed
mobster. He's the top ranking boss of New Jersey. So unless Finn has
been living under a rock for the past decade or so, he must know that
he's with a Don's daughter.
> > Having said that, I beleive it's a good play for Finn to propose to
> Meadow, that does make him untouchable.
Not necessarily. I can't completely fault him thinking such a move
would save his neck. It almost makes sense. But if he were to
suddenly break it off with Meadow and get out of town, that would send
Vito the signal that Finn is scared shitless, and will apparently have
no more contact whatsoever with any of them ever again. Therefore,
Vito would have nothing to worry about. But if Finn stays engaged to
Meadow and, God forbid, marries her, he'll be running into Vito all
the time. The fear of Finn eventually squealing will eat away at Vito
as long as he stays in the inner circle.
Finn's one of the few likable characters on the show, I hope he gets
out alive.
> He panicked when he proposed to Meadow. He doesn't love her.
> How could he sincerely ask for her hand right after all of her
>whining (it was unbearable!)?
Maybe he proposed so she'd shut up and let him get some
sleep.
You're right on the money. If I were Finn, I'd catch a cab to
LaGuardia and take the next flight to LAX.
I haven't been living under a rock but I don't know of any mafia
bosses in New Jersey, New York, or anywhere.
Boy howdy, he'll hate himself in the mornin'.

Exactly. And that's how they want it. Stuff just disappears; nobody
knows where.
