Anyway, I thought a good way remember him would be for us each to
recount some of his best moments from Saturday Night Live.
For me, Joe Piscopo's impressions are what I'll remember best. His
portrayals of David Letterman, Frank Sinatra, and Andy Rooney weren't
exactly uncanny to the point that you'd mistake him for the person he
was imitating. Yet, he simultaneously captured and mocked all their
embarrassing mannerisms. To this day, I can't watch Andy Rooney without
thinking of Joe Piscopo's impression of him: "Ever wonder why they call
it the Middle East? Is it really in the middle? Ever notice it gets
dark at night? Where does the sun go?"
He also had a number of original characters that I thought were really
entertaining, like Doug Whiner, the "I'm from Jersey" guy, and the
Saturday Night Live Sportscaster.
Well, those are some of my favorites. I'm sure we each have a lot of
funny memories that we owe to him, and I think it would be nice for us
all to share some of them here.
-SD
I just saw that on CNN. It just feels for me like one of those moments
where you'll always remember where you were when you heard about it,
just like when Kurt Cobain, John Candy, and Chris Farley died. It's
just so hard to accept. He was only 46, they said on the news. And he
always looked like he was in great shape.
It seemed like he had such a promising career ahead of him when he left
Saturday Night Live. But he never did anything. He had a couple of TV
Specials (which were great), but that was it. I remember the days when
everyone thought that he and Eddie Murphy were the two fastest rising
stars on television. But only Eddie Murphy ever really hit it big.
Anyway, my favorite Joe Piscopo character has to be Doug and Wendy
Whiner (with Robin Duke as Wendy). They would go to a restaurant or get
held up in a bank or appear on a talk show, and just whine and complain
constantly. It's so funny, because I know so many people who are just
like that (though maybe not to that extreme).
I really hope they do a tribute episode of SNL for him, like they did
for Chris Farley. I think that would be a great thing to watch.
>By the time most of you read this, you will probably already have
>learned that Joe Piscopo died late Friday evening of an embolism.
Is this a hoax? Why is there nothing about this at CNN? I also found nothing
when searching through the major news services at the Drudge Report site.
And nothing in the _Los Angeles Times_, which would be all over a
celebrity death like flies around excrement.

I just saw a little tribute they put together on E!. I guess it
happenned too late last night to make today's paper, because I didn't
see anything in there this morning. This is a real tragedy. He was
always one of my favorites. I don't understand why the TV is making so
little of this, compared to when Chris Farley died. I think Joe Piscopo
was much more talented. I guess they're all too wrapped up in Iraq and
Monica Lewinsky.
Take care all.
Charles.
I just heard. It is a terrible tragedy. Christ, first Chris Farley, then
Brad Hall, and now Joe Piscopo. Is it a sign?

I miss Joe saying, "But I've got diverticulitis!" They could dedicate a
whole 90-minute show to Joe. He was that good.

Brad Hall is dead too. When did that happen? Isn't he Julia Louis Dreyfuss's
husband. I can't believe they're all passing away.
By the way, I've heard Dana Carvey has been having heart trouble. Any truth to
this. I pray not. He is hysterically funny. Has anyone seen "Trapped in
Paradise" with Carvey, Lovitz and Nick Cage? Great Movie.

Dana Carvey had an angioplasty procedure a few months ago to remove
blockage in a heart artery. Last I heard he was doing fine.

Please don't let this be the next "Robin Mirsky" thread....

Friends will help you move.
Real friends will help you move bodies.
At least Piscopo's tragic death was the only SNL death of the day. Remember
when Charles Rocket and Ann Risley died on the same day, which prevented either
one from being properly mourned??
By the way, if you play Steve Martin's "King Tut" backwards you get a message
saying "Joe is dead, man...miss him, miss him..."
Norm McDonald utters "I buried Joe" at the end of last week's "Weekend Update".
If you play the "Loew's Singers" jingle from the Garth Brooks show backwards,
you'll get this message: "Yes, Piscopo is dead and gone to heaven".
And finally, on the cover of the unreleased Celine Dion album "Slap Happy
Road", you can see Joe Piscopo walking along the crosswalk in loose burial suit
and barefooted alongside Eddie Murphy.
That's all...
What is an embolism?
I just saw Brad Hall on the Actor's Screen awards when Julia won her award.

By now you will all have heard about the sudden and tragic death of
everybody who ever appeared on, or wrote for, SNL, including hosts.
Production assistant Jennie Ng Zletz was also counted among the dead.
I am still a little too broken up to think clearly. It seems like only
yesterday they were all writing, performing, and hosting those
fantastic shows, and then labeling the videotapes of them for storage.
I hope NBC does some kind of tribute to them all, they could easily
fill a 90-minute show with the highlights of these geniuses, except
Chris Kattan who I didn't like all that much. But it's not like he
should have died because of that.

After Brad's death she married his look-alike brother. That wasn't Brad you saw
at the SAG awards showe. Brad is dead.
> What is an embolism?
Isn't it when an artery or vein bursts? Quite often in the brain.
And back when Tim Kazurinsky was going his Dr. Jack Bodofsky bit once,
he seemed to be snickering but was really whispering, "I buried Brad!"
I figure Piscopo is still with us,but what about the Weiders?
What are their birth, and if applicable, death dates??
Fortunately, Brad was a pioneer in the field of human cloning research. After
he gave up his acting career, he used science to have himself duplicated.
Little Brad know that it would come in handy when, late last year, he was
killed in a tragic bathroom explosion. Julia has taken it all quite well, and
the media has played along...just like nothing ever happened.

Who the hell is Joe Piscopo???
Robin Mirsky's former brother-in-law
I saw Piscopo in a local production of "Grease!" last year. He was
actually pretty good.

Oh, OK. Thanks. That helped.
Yes, it is true. It was in last Sunday's L.A. Times, and you can find it
with the search engine at the E! Network web site (eonline.com). I also
saw this a little on TV, but not much at all. I am very surprised that it
didn't get more TV coverage, but I'm sure that if you ask your friends and
coworkers, you'll find some who saw something about it. Just ask around,
and I'm sure you'll see that this is not a joke, even though some of the
messages posted on the subject here have been fairly amusing.
And I think Joe would have wanted it that way.

The E! Online search engine our pal from Duke mentioned came up with zilch.
There's a filmography and a biography, but the file for news stories came up
empty. The NY Times website mentions some Robert Wuhl movie that Piscopo's in,
but no obituaries. Yet.

The SNL cast old-timers are getting to be of an age when yes, they really are
dying from time to time (Belushi, Danitra Vance, Gilda, Chris...). Those of us
who follow the show rely on Usenet newsgroups like this one for accurate news
and information and might not take your little prank in the spirit in which you
intended.
Leave humor to the professionals, kid.

Yeah, the first week.
