probably because Quinn's name begins with Q. Hence the name, "Q-Ball"
The "Ball" part probably got attached on.

This is my first time posting to one of these. I hope I get it right.

Think of it as Q-ball, not cue ball. Q for Quinn!

Actually, according to the closed captioning the spelling is "Q-Ball".

So, Q-Ball is just another nickname, like Remmy or Professor. Does Wade
have a nickname (other than Miss Wells)?

That's absolutely right, AFAIK. There's a flub in the pilot which
has Rembrandt call him Q-ball before he finds out his name, so the other
reasons were speculated. I think it's done correctly in the book.

Yes, Q for Quinn and cue-ball for the white round thing in billiards.
It's a pun because Quinn's name starts with Q and a cue ball is white.

It's "Q-Ball", as in Q for "Quinn" I am amazed by the amount of people who
don't understand that.
Why does he need a reason to make up an affectionate nickname for his
friend?

There is another reference. Cue-Ball has been used as a
nickname for an intellectual as a reference to another
affectionate term: egg-head. Thus the correlation
between two round white objects. But Q for Quinn is
the most accurate answer.

Was it ever actually explained? For some reason, I always thought it had
to do with Quinn being really bright. Since they didn't replay the pilot ep
like they said they were going to, does anyone remember?; did the nickname
start in the first show?

If I remember correctly, Rembrandt started it from the very beginning--it
was probably meant to be condescending since Quinn had just ruined his
Cadillac, or maybe it was just Rembrandt "lingo" or something like that.
Anyway, it stuck. Most likely origin: "Quinn" starts with a "Q."

I don't think the white part had anything to do with it (I take it you're
referring to the fact that Quinn and the cue ball are both white). Just
Q-Ball for his initial.

any way, that is like a term for a brainy person, and Quinn is very

Have you (or someone else) seen an actual shooting script?

I think the connection goes like this:

A very smart person is sometimes called an "egghead". So the mental
image is of someone with no hair. Picture a completely bald guy and
his head will resemble a... cue ball.

I think that's right, but who knows what goes on in the heads of the
Sliders scriptwriters....

Plus, I don't think it began as a term of endearment ... Rembrandt was rather
pissed with Quinn once he found out what had happened to him and now he's just
making the best of the situation ...

possibly, but since that is done by a completely different company and they
take massive liberties with the dialog anyway, I wouldn't put much faith in

I've only heard the nickname Cueball to refer to a bald person. Quinn
isn't bald. I myself wonder, then, why Rembrandt calls Quinn Cueball.
Any ideas?

Easy. Remmy calls Quinn 'Qball', not Cueball, because Quinn starts with a
'Q'.

Rembrandt calls Quinn "Q-ball" as a play on the (billiards) word "cue
ball" -- the Q is for Quinn... obviously?

That seems to be the consensus, but I have to admit it's a pretty
bizarre nickname. I'd like to see the show's explanation for how they
came up with it.

Yep, I'd like to know the "official" reason, too. It does
seem to be a sort of "pun," though, if a slightly weird one...

In Pool, or "Pocket Billiards," the cue-ball is the *white* one -
and it is the ball that the player "shoots" into the setup of
balls at the beginning of a game. Something that distrupts a
static, already "existing" situation... rather the way Quinn
(and the others) do when they "slide" into a new world. :)

Those things combined with the "Q" from Quinn might seem an
amusing pun to Rembrandt.
